LAST EDITED ON Nov-03-02 AT 01:58 PM (EST)

I just went to their website for the first time...
Apparently; they have trackage rights in the entire continental 49 States, not to mention the entirety of Canada?I thought it was only 20 or so states..But all 49!?"Canadian National Railway Company spans Canada and mid-America, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico, serving the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, B.C., Montreal, Halifax, New Orleans, and Mobile, Ala., and the key cities of Toronto, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Duluth, Minn.-Superior, Wis., Green Bay, Wis., Minneapolis-St. Paul, Memphis, St. Louis, and Jackson, Miss., with connections to all points in North America."
Seems like the Borg have met Species 8472 for sure...Just can't wait till they assimilate the Borg... CN..The largest RR in the world..? – image 3I'm just surprised that I haven't seen a SINGLE CN loco go through the mainline past my house

Hi,
They probably do have trackage rights into 49 states. But some lines may be only secondary lines.
Maybe CN doesn't have trackage rights on the line by your house but on another line in your state. Just a thought..But its not the biggest... well not YET!
Go CN!!!
EDIT>CN also owns 2 oveseas lines. 1 in new zealand??(I think) and one in europe. CN got 'em when purchasing WC. But CN wants to sell them.<

RE: CN..The largest RR in the world..?

Okay... The line next to my house runs only Amtrak. CN does not run anything into New Jersey or Alaska or Hawaii and I'm not too sure about New York either. New York is the domain of NS, CSX, NYSW, and CP/StLH/DH. I forgot NY&A, MN, LIRR, and AMTK. UP and BNSF both run into New York/New Jersey on CSX. CP runs into New York City on CSX and MN. AMTK runs into the City on MN and LIRR. NJT runs in on AMTK. NY&A runs on LIRR. LIRR, MN, SBK, NYCTA, and SIRT are owned by the MTA. So where I live, the MTA owns at least 90% of the tracks. They own the South Brooklyn Railroad, the Staten Island Railroad, the Interborough Rapid Transit System, the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit System, the Independent System, Metro North Railroad, and the Long Island Railroad. Port Authority owns the PATH/H&M, and the JFK AirTrain. Amtrak owns the Empire Connection, the Hellgate Bridge, and the Penn Tunnels. CSX owns Hunters Point Yard and the connection to the Hudson Line as well as a track on the Hellgate Bridge. CN has no presence here. I think the odds are for the MTA here. The subway alone has more trackage than all of the other railroads in the city combined.

trackage rights in the entire continental 49 States ---> re-read the above statement..-->with connections to all points in North America." that just means they can get one of their customers cars to any point......as in interchanging it w/ another road....no trackage rights...

Argh..
Okay..
I wasn't too sure about what they meant by 'connections'..for all I knew about CN, they may have very well meant 'trackage rights'..Sorry for the mixup...As for the photo..I dunno..I didn't take it..I don't really know anything about signals...
And as for 'largest RR' I didn't mean stockwise; just that they spanned 2 whole countries in physical resources, whether it be track, engines, trackage rights, cars, or whatever.................CN..The largest RR in the world..? – image 19

Then the book was wrong that the person in my school class last year was looking at and quizing me on to see what the largest railroad is or she was lying which is nothing new for her because all she does is lie so all of you are probably right. As for the picture, I didn't mean signal lights, I meant crossing lights, but it doesn't matter anyway. I'm not good at signals either but I'm starting to know some of them.Adam-------------------------------CN..The largest RR in the world..? – image 20Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

"Largest in the world", is a bit of an overstatment! My railway books rates the Russian (ex-Soviet) system as the largest in track length, and amount of steel trackage!Speaking of trivia, did you know that Indian Railways is the single largest employer in the world? Read that in one of those in-flight magazines a year or so back.

>railway books rates the Russian (ex-Soviet) system as the
>largest in track length, and amount of steel trackage! That's typically American. If it's largest in the US it just has to be largest in the world. The rest of the world doesn't count.Like the "World Series" in baseball. Where else is baseball played other than in the US, Canada, Cuba and Japan?Soccer (ie real football) is played all over the world and could very well have a "world series", but baseball?(The Union Pacific Railroad has 6,800 locomotives and 100,000 rolling stock. The Indian Railways has 10,000 locomotives, 38,000 passenger cars and 350,000 freight cars. Yet the Indian Railways say they're number two in the world. So which one is the world's largest in locomotives and rolling stock? The Russians? The Chinese? The Russian state railway is larger than UP in track miles, but do they also have more locos and rolling stock? All I could find on the 'Net was claims that the Russin State Railway has more locomotives and rolling stock than all North American railroads combined, but no definitive figures. I found figures regarding the length of track though: UP 39,000 miles and Russian State Railway, SZD, 90,000 miles, though it's less today. And also info about the most numerous steam locomotives ever, a class of 0-10-0 of which the Russians operated more than 11,000!)

Hmm. What's "anti-American" about reminding Americans that there is a world out there?Open your eyes, you might be surprised by what you see.I've been to most countries in Europe, about 30 different US states by car, rail and Greyhound bus, several provinces in Canada from Quebec to BC, criscrossed through Mexico from Ciudad Juarez to Oaxaca and Yucatán by rail, bus and thumb, and I've also visited a number of other countries, in Asia and Africa, in order to see what it's like in those places, and also to learn about different cultures and different people. And one of the things that I've noticed is that Americans in general know less about the world around them than do people in most other countries, yet Americans are more convinced about the superiority of their way of life and their culture than are others (even including the French...). How can you know that what you have is the best in the world if you have nothing to compare it to? And no, that's not an anti-American comment either. If it is then every display of American patriotism, seen almost daily even in these forums, is anti-world and an offense to all non-Americans, since those "patriotic" messages proclaim the superiority of the United States of America and of American culture (if there even is such a thing).

>That's how the thread started, but it then switched to
>Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. Which is what prompted
>my comments. So what we have is, and this is just a synopsis, not direct quotes:Party A - "I heard someone that CN is the largest railroad in the world."Party B - "That can't be right, NS, UP, etc is larger."Svante - "Americans are braggarts who think that everything they have is the biggest and best and are ignorant of the world around them!"Hmm, that's quite a stretch from the original conversation. >What's "anti-American" about reminding Americans that there
>is a world out there? Firstly, it's a matter of tone and context. If you were doing what you claimed here, assuming that it was necessary or even desired, that would be one thing. However, you were not "reminding Americans that there is a world out there" as you put it. You were making a rant about your perceptions of Americans' inadequacies.>Open your eyes, you might be surprised by what you see. One thing is true, I have definitely been surprised by what I've seen from you.>***extensive biographical and other information deleted for brevity***You seem to make a great deal of broad assumptions from what you can see on your computer screen vis-a-vis the participants in this forum and their worldly experiences. That is really interesting since further down in the thread you are telling someone not to believe everything that they see on the Internet. It would also be interesting to see how close any of these assumptions are to reality. I would not be surprised to find that there are individuals in these forums whose life experiences would make your's look like those of a homebody. It is also interesting to note you exhibit the same attitudes about Americans that you accuse Americans of having about other cultures. In spite of your extensive travel in America, you still manage to color an entire people in broad, simple terms. That is sad. And it still has no bearing whatsoever on the original topic of this thread; the statement that Canadian National is the biggest railroad in the world. As I said earlier, you really need to see someone about those non-secutor, anti-American tirades that you tend to spin off into from time to time. The fact that you could get from where this thread started to where you ended up is disturbing to say the least. And your periodic, irrelevant blasts of your perceptions of Americans' shortcomings is tiresome...and contributes no value to these forums.Henry(Contents edited for punctuation.)

RE: CN..The largest RR in the world..?

Take another read and you will see that, indeed,CN spans North America. However, it is two narrow corridors. One spans east to west straddling the border of the United States and of Canada. The other runs north to south down the Mississipi River. With its American holdings and affiliations, it can indeed find its rollingstock all over the map. I've seen pictures of CN SD40-2s in Mexico. But then consider that it's the same situation with the other five class one lines as well. It had become almost routine to see the UP yellow and th SP Bloody noses on the CP lines near Toronto Ont. a few years ago. BNSF,Conrail and CSX were seen on CN. Now you can see rolling stock from three countries. How much longer before we all (This side of the planet)see the same from South America? .Right now the only place with a greater variety of boxcars is Steve Spivey's house!

Hmm..Again I got mixed up between signal lights and crossing lights...I wonder..How long till South-American Railroads start meeting up with North American ones? (such as Rio Grande)?
Hmm, interesting...
That just popped an idea into my head...
With today's technology; perhaps it might be possible to make a single track stretching along the equator, around the globe, in a straight line...Supposing that it can be done; what do you think would be the 'physics' of such a track? 15% lighter loads? 10% reduction of fuel costs?? (from the Earth's rotation)Or have I really gone off the deep end? (It's 10 past 1 AM here, so I'm guessing I just went off the deep end and so I'll stop rambling and stuff and...ZzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........)CN..The largest RR in the world..? – image 25

Class 1 route miles..

CN is the largest Class 1 in Canada. CN - 17,986 owned route miles
CP - 14,099 owned route miles
BNSF - 33,500 owned route miles
UP - 33,035 owned route miles
CSX - 22,700 owned route miles
NS - 21,600 owned route milesThe fact that CN can get a load to just about anywhere is due to connection points and interline exchange agreements. Most of those agreements tend to be preferential (or reciprocal) per diem and demurrage rates.Cheers
