Did BNSF jsut get their new Refrigerated Unit Added big long boxcar looking cars?I think they can be controlled by satelitte too if I'm thinking right, but I haven't saw them with any other railraod, I saw a few today here in Johnstown, PA and saw a few when I was out in Missouri at my Uncle's house and he took me with his railroad buddy and gave me a tour of a BNSF yard.Adam-------------------------------BNSF Refrigerator Cars – image 2Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking...but they're not 'controlled' by satellite, they're 'monitored' by satellite...------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to be involved with trains, the Union Pacific!BNSF Refrigerator Cars – image 4John Ekhoff

RE: BNSF Refrigerator Cars

I know what you are talking about. The BNSF's have icicles painted hanging from the top and are 65' long. The UP's just have a big UP shiels on it. They're not too popular because they are just too big.
The smaller 50' reefers are more preferred, but some people will use them. I beleive that they have been on the system for a year or so.
But contrary to popular beleif, I think that they can be controlled by satellite.

That's right because when I was at my Uncle's place his friend said that them BNSF Cars can be controlled by satelitte because I even saw one have some exhaust come out of it when we were there. By the way, his friend loads cars at the yard. What does size matter, with these new ones can't you haul much more in one car?Adam-------------------------------BNSF Refrigerator Cars – image 5Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

RE: BNSF Refrigerator Cars

The exhaust you saw would be from the diesel generator that powers the refrigeration unit. It'd not going to go hoofing it down the track by satellite control, otherwise the whole rail signal system would have to satellite controlled too.Any satellite communication would be to send data as to location, temperature, and general technical information. This is common in other industries that run unattended operations.Any variation from normal, and a technician is sent do deal with it,thus cutting down on "watchkeeping" staff.

RE: BNSF Refrigerator Cars

Why would the whole signal system have to be satelitte controlled if we had satelitte controlled cars?Adam-------------------------------BNSF Refrigerator Cars – image 6Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

RE: BNSF Refrigerator Cars

Apparently the rebuilt UP refrigerator cars with the ARMN reporting marks have satellite monitoring and the ability to have its temperature adjusted via satellite.PatchCrew

RE: BNSF Refrigerator Cars

I think those are the standard 50 or 55ft. refeers you're talking about. The ones they are referring to is the big 65 footers with the big unit and platform on each end. They're nice to ride on. But some customers just do not need all of that extra space, but they're still paying for it, so get a smaller car would be the best solution, dont you think so?

If you're gonna do it, do it with precision.

RE: BNSF Refrigerator Cars

I made a 3D model of one several months back. It is here on TS in the download section. It is a nicely model 3D fuel tank and refrigeration unit.DonBNSF Refrigerator Cars – image 8 LOgo
