I know this isn't train related but...Today we have no school here. We had ice rain yesterday and betime night branches were busting and falling everyone and about 8:00 PM I heard a big BOOM which was a transformer blowing up up the road from my house. Are power was out for most of the night we have tons of branches and a tree laying across my house's driveway. A lot of people are still without power here and cleanup of the roads needs to commence. To make it complete all the schools in the county I live in are closed today and yet we're supposed to have two more inches of snow tonight, yikes! Did this happen anywhere else?Adam-------------------------------Bad Storms – image 2Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

LOL, believe me you wouldn't really want it, I was really cold last night and had to get extra blankets because obviously the furnace didn't really work to get heat because the pumps were powered by electricity and the pumps for the radiators were off because the electricity was out. We're just lucky we were one of the very first ones to get our power fixed.Adam-------------------------------Bad Storms – image 4Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

A few years after we moved to our current house, around 1992 it would have been. It was the middle of winter about 10:00pm, and the transformer blew on our street (we have little green boxes on each street with transformers for each street - we hae underground lines). This shut down the power to all of the 10 houses on our cul-de-sac. It was about -42C ou side plus a wind chill. Like you because we had no power the funcace (natural gas) was still working but the electric fan in the furnace shut down. The temp in the house quickly dropped to less than -20 even with a small wood fire place working. We were forced to use sleeping bags inside of our beds. Dad ran a line over to a house on the next street over to power the fan in the furnace and once that got going we were fine.By the way, our schools don't close due to the winter weather. We are expected to show up at school regardless of the outside temp, ice rain or blizzard (I have walked the 15 min walk in about -47C this includes the wind chill). The only thing is that the busses will not run at -35C or less since you can't get 'em shakin'.kwk100,A Diesel drinking, piston clankin', air pollutin', smoke belchin' ten wheel buggy, from Seattle WA...

There was no snow but it's snowing now but very little, anyway, I don't play in the snow anymore. It was rain that was coming down frozen like icicles which also may be called sleet.Adam-------------------------------Bad Storms – image 7Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

Bleh. Think that's something? Look up "Ice Storm '98" on any search engine.Back then, everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) was coated with at least 3" of solid rock-hard ice. Governor declared a state of emergency; and anyone caught outside after dark would be hauled off to a shelter by the police or the Nat'l Guard. Didn't even matter if you were standing on your porch.Transformers were blowing up on almost every street corner in Maine. (Ever see sumthin like that? It's sumthin you dont wanna see twice in your lifetime..Although the blue lightning arcing through the sky was kinda cool )
I believe that was when Canadian National moved an SD70 along a road, and hooked it up to the power grid...Saved thousands of people a lot of hassle...----------------I can sympathize with ya; stuff like that scared me ****less...Bad Storms – image 9

My dad took me to see 3-4 M420's ideling in the streets with soldeirs guarding them. (I didn't hear of sd70 but its possible.)CN offered my dad that we could stay at his office, but we stayed with our aunt... Good thing was... My front and back yard was an ICE rink! Clearded snow of it and had a good old hockey game.Rob

RE: Bad Storms

Sounds similar to the mess we had in Omaha 5 or 6 years ago. I woke up to what
I thought was the crackly sound of fireworks. Turns out it was the tree branches.
It was October and the trees all still had leaves, so there was plenty of surface area
to catch the falling moisture and let it freeze on them. About 60% of the city lost
electricity due to downed power lines, and they estimated about 30% of the tree
canopy was lost. There were dozens of vehicles damaged by falling branches,
several parked cars completely crushed by very large limbs falling. And just to
make this officially train related, the Omaha mainline was closed for a while
with many trees down across the tracks, and the cleanup crews having a devil of
a time being able to get to the areas that needed work.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-31-02 AT 08:50 PM (EST)

Well I can't believe this weather so early in the season. We had no school again today, I just now got my power back that has been out since early this morning. The power workers look very tired of doing their job, sadly there's still thousands of people without power, and power trucks are even coming from Ohio state to help out! Most of the ice is now off of the trees which is good but there's still a lot of debris to clean up, there was something major wrong on my road because they stopped at my neighbors and worked then went up the road then the power came on. The resturant parking lots were full of power trucks today too, constantly, which I've never saw before. My brother's girlfriend still hasn't had power since this thing whole started which was almost two days ago. I can't believe all this is happening so early before the actual winter season!Sounds like a lot of you have had a lot of bad storm situations yourselves, obviously you know I didn't have a very happy and safe halloween here like I was wishing everyone else.Adam-------------------------------Bad Storms – image 13Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

I laugh at myself for falling on the ice way back then, but dammit, black ice HURTS!Broke my wrist, almost broke my hip, from a slip on black ice (which in turn, was on black tar) a few years ago..Falling backwards, then landing flat on your butt, and falling forwards, then reaching out with one hand to support all you weight are two things you dont wanna do (aside from the broken wrist, I sliced my hand up pretty bad cuz there was loose gravel, and shards of regulare ice as well..bruised my butt up and accordioned my spine..almost threw my back out)..There's a reason why they say 'tuck and roll' Bad Storms – image 17

RE: Bad Storms

Geez, well we definately needed the moisture here to get us out of the drought we had here but not the kind of weather we just had, no sir eeee.I know, slipping backwards and falling on your butt hurts, if I do that or when I used to do that I usually can't get up for a few seconds because I got the breath knocked out of me (from the flap of muscle vibrating too fast under your lungs). You can also break your tailbone that way and if you do that then that's bad because that's the hardest bone in the body to heal.Adam-------------------------------Bad Storms – image 20Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/
