Hm..Looks to me like NS is just tryin to advertise in a CSX-run zone
I figured that it would be a special purpose, something that would be more necessary than just having a FRED...

Up in Canada, I know a lot a railways use the caboose when they have long reversing moves. A friend of mine worked for Mackenzie Northern, and they regularly used the caboose for a 2-3 mile spur they had to back into. More comfortable for the conductor, instead hanging on the the ladder Plus it's freakin cold up here all winter - Andrew

Here in Fremont Ohio NS still uses a caboose, still painted in N&W. We have a locomotive stationed here all the time to move freight around and in and out of the city. The caboose has a whistle on it for when the train is going backwards through the town. Happy Rails, Patrick
( ps i wouldn't mind an N&W or NS caboose too)

hmm havent notice it before, I dunno for 100% sure but I could take a guess at it. I guess theres a window on the roof and that thingy there is use to keep some of the sun out therefore keeping the caboose cool, but I could be wrong, remember I'm taking a stab in the dark here. The NS also uses a caboose for the Luken's steel local between Coatsville PA and Philly. The train runs 6 days a week and uses the old PRR Main Line between Glenn Loch and the 'Ville. I catch it going EB around 2-4PM. The caboose is a bay side still painted in Conrail blue. The train is roughly 20 cars and is considered a yard transfer - no FRED only a red flag on the end.Oh, this consists and movement originated in the Conrail days.Joe

If I'm not mistaken, the FRA still allows moves of less than 20-30 miles to run without FRED, and if it's a switching turn, with a full crew and a lot of backing, a Crummy would be nice to get out of the weather, and to provide rear end protection during backing.

Yeah you guys get NS cabooses, but here in Philly its just rusting CSX, Conrail, NS, PRR, NH, PC, and CPR boxes.Whos Says Todays railraod doesn't use Caboose anymore? – image 21In 1943 a series of allied experiments were undertaken to render a ship invisible to enemy radar, the results of these tests were never released to the public.
