Hey guys just heard on NBC Nightly News that the Al Queda is targetting the U.S Railroads now. Not good. They could hit my area because a lot of important stuff rolls through my town daily like military DODX trains. And that worries me about my dad too cause he works for the NS as a conductor and he comes through here when he is in the MH Pool. Any thoughts or comments on this news would be appreciated.

Be careful out there, railfans,....

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,66635,00.html
http://www.msnbc.com/news/822627.asp?0ct=-302With railroad police, train crews, and local cops keeping a more watchful eye, railfanning will draw more attention. If you are stopped (as I was a couple weeks ago), just keep your cool, and don't get indignant with them. They're trying to protect lives and valuable resources. Let them do their jobs, and try to stay out of their way. No matter how "friendly" an area may have been in the recent past, I'd say any form of trespassing right now is a very bad idea.Like the old sergeant used to say on Hill Street Blues:
"And hey,.....let's be careful out there."Pop

"They could hit my area"Well, yes they could and they could hit Santa's workshop.I fear anything that happens the question will be asked, "Is it terrorists?"It took a few days but it came up about the sniper, "is this a terrorist?" Not you Mr. Chicago!Turned out to be a couple black dudes that had a bad attitude and nothing else to do. PEOPLE KILLED FOR NO REASON!So youngsters in the forum, get used to it because it might be a while before it gets better.

RE: Al Queda targeting U.S Railroads

This is not the first time they have alerted the railroads since 9/11. The biggest threat would be incoming containers. Other than that, it would be fairly hard to put together a huge plan of destruction, unless they had help on the inside. For the most part, trains are moving, or if they are not, someone is usually around to keep an eye on thing. Like I said, if anything were to happen, it would come by way of a foriegn container. Keep your chin up, were too strong to give up now.ChrisIt's not a game, it's a way of life.

>REASON! As a matter of fact, he turned out to be a Muslim, from The Nation of Islam, Louis Farakan's group. Also a security guard at the million man march. Also registered the plates on the caprice on 9/11/2 (although they were on a Cadillac at the time). A couple hours after he left, there was a bomb threat at the BMV (on 9/11) the first in 8 yrs. What's it all add up to? I don't know. But it seems to add up to an Islamic person who wanted to kill some Americans. That pretty much meets the definition of terrorism in my book. It doesn't matter if he was acting alone, or through a group. He caused a lot of unsettled-ness in the DC area, and destroyed a lot of families.

Muslim or not, Nation of Islam or not, these individuals' acts meet the definition of Terrorism, regardless in whose name they were acting. Let us hope the Attorney General of the U.S. takes the case into Federal Jurisdiction and prosecutes to the fullest extent. (Yes, I mean death) Anti-terrorism laws have been in place since long before 9/11/01.
So many of us have fixated on Al Oa'ida, that we forget there are other terrorist organizations, including non-Muslim groups, out there.(Edited for spelling)

1992 was the Mobile accident, the incident outside of Phoenix was in 95 I think.Well this is going to make it harder for me at Cienega, a few months ago someone put a tie on the high bridge so a train would derail and fall into the creek below. Well they thought it was teenagers and when I was there railfaning, the cops questioned me since I had binocualrs and thought I was doing something. Had to show them all my trains magizines in the back of my car to prove that damn cop wrong. Guess this is going to make it harder on me.Picture of the High Bridge a few days ago

RE: Al Queda targeting U.S Railroads

Sadly the world has changed. I have my doubts that the US railroads will be attacked and think it is more someone wanting to live off people's fear...as was the case with the sniper.Still life goes on and people still need to make the most of life. It is sad that people are worried so much. All i can say is that you probably have as much chance of winning the lottery as of being hit personally by the Al Queda.

I heard they were only targeting Amtrak for now, my Dad said it may not be true though because it's only coming from the people in Cuba but the threat probably is true.I just got a new handheld scanner that you can also talk through. I guess it wouldn't be a good idea for me to try to talk to the train crews I watch, huh?

Hey all
I think if we all just use common sense and stick to public areas we should be ok, I know the railroads did get majorly paranoid(and rightly so) after 9-11-01 but at least the sense I've picked up is the railroads have realized that in 95% percent of cases they have a vigilant army of rail buffs out there that have in the past pointed out problems that could have gone disasterous.
Now overzelous local cops thats another story.

RE: Al Queda targeting U.S Railroads

You're wrong in assuming all the detainees have been there since the initial "gathering up." New detainees continue to flow in, in smaller numbers, with no fanfair. Also, new information is uncovered in The Stan, and in other countries, all the time. Intelligence gathering is still going full-force, through raids, detainments, and SIGINT. The fact that most of it has dropped off the public radar screen is actually a good thing.
And whether the threats are real, or misdirection, the RR police and local authorities will still be at heightened awareness. So it makes good sense for railfans to take extra caution not to become a nuisance, by diverting protective resources away from their mission. If the RR Police are talking to you about why you're on their property with binocs and a camera, then they're not available to spot an actual threat elsewhere.
Just use good sense, and help them do their jobs.Pop

What's The Stan?Exactly right Darkfyre, exactly right! Lets take for example this time, Muslims attacked the U.S.A. on September 11th but you can't blame all of them for it because only a small portion of the many Muslims believe in terrorism!

no major changes that i noticed today as far as security. i went out trackside on the water level route this afternoon with no problems. on security up where i live i have noticed since 9/11 that all train movements into the local military base are done at slow speed with military police on both sides inspecting the trains. and today there were local police keeping an eye on train traffic through town. not sure if its related but it might be.joe

Oh, I see now IcyFire, thanks, I'm going to watch freight trains tomorrow at the Johnstown Train Station, not much activity at that station at all so don't know if they'll be guarding it anymore heavily or not, of course, a Amtrak train does come through there 4 times a day though. What's The Stan mean as stated earlier in this thread?Adam-------------------------------Al Queda targeting U.S Railroads – image 18Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

Only one thing to say...Before 9/11, I enjoyed hanging out at airports and watching/photographing airliners (my favorite airliner is/was the Boeing 727, hence my screen name). Now, that hobby is pretty much toast thanks to the increased security. Those dirty terrorist low-lifes have already stolen one of my hobbies...If they try to take another one, they're going to have to try to wrench it from my COLD DEAD HANDS!!!!!If railfanning becomes "illegal", I'll just buy myself a piece of property next to a major main line and do all the railfanning I want from my own land! No sleazy scumbag terrorist is going to rob me of this hobby....Bruce Bridges

I used to work for the NYSW signal dept.We were always on the lookout for vandalism and wear and tear.Inspecting the rails as we maintained the signals was part of our job.Vandalism was a big problem.Especially in Paterson,NJ.As a matter of fact,a bunch of the 9/11 terrorists came from Paterson. There were a lot of mean dudes working on that track crew.Guys from the hills of upstate NY and NE PA.If any of those guys got their hands on a terrorist messing with the tracks, they would NEED Allah's help. The cops wouldn't be called until after the fact."Honestly officer,I don't know how the blood got on the spike maul."

It's ruined for kids too, kids were used to be able to be allowed to go into the cockpit with a pilot in a jet trip for a little while, no more during that. I'm sure kids loved that, but now it's all ruined for them!Bruce Bridges, I'm with you on the railfanning!I'm sure the small station that doesn't get very many passengers that I railfan at in Johnstown, Pennsylvania will have increased security since a NS mainline is going past it and Amtrak comes and stops 4 times a day.I got a question. NS, CONRAIL, which is the most popularly used frequency now, NS's or CONRAIL's or are they both the same frequencies? I'd like to know this because I'll probably be getting a handheld scanner for railfanning and firefighting this christmas. Also in the movie Atomic Train on the NTSB pager it says RailRoad Emergency <3>. Does <3> tell the person what channel to turn to on the radio? Are NTSB Agents just as smart as FBI when investigating a derailment? I've never saw FBI involved in a derailment before that I saw about on TV so that's why I was wondering.Adam-------------------------------Al Queda targeting U.S Railroads – image 19Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

Actually, if it's traffic and money...That would be Penn. Station, and Grand Central Station..Hundreds of millions invested into those two buildings alone...They've already demonstrated that it's people they're after, not just industrial products..
If they hit those two buildings, can we say 'perpetual gridlock for the next fifty miles'?

First of all, I was reading this thing from yahoo about bin Laden's will...he hates Al Queda and calls them "cowards"...this coming from Osama Bin Laden...wouldn't it be rather hard to mess up some track? track has special wiring and if this wiring is severed, it automatically sends a red signal all around the track. so unless they somehow knowa way to derail track but not tamper with the wires, then I wouldn't be too scared.-Creating Pac-Man comics for the humorless people out therethe search for the perfect route continues!

Well I saw on ABC news website a while ago a friend sent me a article where a guy was going to make a movie out of a train derailment that killed a few including a engineer who was protecting a kid up in the cab with his body (Don't know if he ever made the movie or not). But anyway him and his friends just threw a switch after a passenger train cleared the signal tower that would've told him to stop because of a changed switch ahead and it derailed the train when the train encountered the switch. There ya have itAdam-------------------------------Al Queda targeting U.S Railroads – image 24Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/
