>All it takes is a person who knows how to run a business and
>you'll be able to pull through the worst of times... Too bad Herb's not running the business anymore. Colleen Barrett and Jim Parker make all of the decisions now, and it's the employees that are pulling Southwest through, not just one person making smart moves. I should know, I'm a ramp agent for Southwest at BWI in Baltimore.Chris Denbow - Baltimore, Md.

Well, I didn't have any offense to Southwest's employees... if any was taken. Above any airline, Southwest is my favorite, especially the new 737s in the new "Canyon Blue" scheme. The new CEOs seem to be doing pretty good as well, especially by running by the policies that made the airline so successful...I enjoy going to Love Field in Dallas (Southwest's HQ). There's a park right at the threshhold of the runways and you can see a Southwest 737 land every minute! But I have yet to see a "Canyon Blue" airplane yet for myself...------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to be involved with trains, the Union Pacific! Why the "Major" Airlines Don't Need Any Money – image 8John Ekhoff

Long story short, when we were going through contract negotiations in the summer of 2001, we were told that a pay upgrade to "match" the other major airlines' ramp agents just wasn't feasible if we wanted to remain profitable (we make the least of any airline ramp agents in the US at Southwest.)A week later, Southwest announces this new POS paint scheme and nice new interiors on all of our planes. Total cost, $85,000,000. Can't give us a competitive pay raise but by God we can repaint the entire fleet! So to most of us, the "fruity" purple/blue paint job is our pay raise.Chris Denbow - Baltimore, Md.

>Dan Not too much. Southwest is the airline the government didn't want in the air (look up the Wright Amendment!) We also got the lowest Sept. 11th compensation of any major airline. And, we are the only major airline to post a profit this year, last year, and the past 30 years. The only other airline "entity" to make a profit this year is Boeing, so it's the "government" airlines that are still being helped along (US Airways, United, American, Delta, Continental, America West, etc.) It is them that are "squandering" the government "investments". This is due to overexpansion, poor management, etc, etc! Their sole aim is to bring down compition at any cost. Well before 9/11 these big airlines were treating pax like dirt, much like the railroads did in the 50's when they wanted to drop pax service in favour of freight.Won't lose any sleep or shed a tear if American,Delta, etc go the route of Eastern or Pan Am.Rich

RE: Why the

Ah, I remember the early days when Southwest was the "Texas Subway", peak, hourly flights between Houston and Dallas was practically the sum total of their service. If only I had the money to invest at the time. (Fat chance, college is a notorious cash drain!)Here's an article with one take on Southwest Airlines:http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1101021028-366310,00.html?cnn=yesIt makes for interesting reading, IMHO.Henry

Ok, how's come everyone likes this thread, but yet it's off topic of railroads, trains and/or train sims but yet no one says anything about it but yet everyone tells me about my off topic posts? Yet Transcon has posted indeed many off topic posts too! I see what's going on here now! Everyone hates me, well maybe I shall just leave this he** hole!Adam-------------------------------Why the "Major" Airlines Don't Need Any Money – image 13Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

LAST EDITED ON Oct-24-02 AT 07:18 PM (EDT)

Look further and it has plenty to do with the topic of railroads, like how the government is being so hypocritical about Amtrak being a waste of money while throwing so much aid the airlines' way, when their handling of their finances isn't any better. Definitely topical in my opinion.Don't sweat the whole OT thing so much. Be mindful when posting in the future, and if other people want to keep digging up the past, leave it to them. It's their own time they waste when they do. Mr. F

Point is you never whine at Transcon for all of his off topic posts.Anyway, RR's, what's the animal or whatever it's supposed to be in the C and the avatar of the guy's CSX signature and avatar earlier in this post? RE: Question about Chessie System animal

Anyway, RR's, what's the animal or whatever it's supposed to be in the C and the avatar of the guy's CSX signature and avatar earlier in this post? I think it's on the Chessie System Locos.Adam The "animal" in the Chessie System Logo, is a "Cat sleeping on a pillow."
From What I read about this design when Chessie System started, back in the early 1970's, the "Chessie or Chesure cat" was derived from the Chesapeake & Ohio's famous Sleeping Car service which offered a smooth as a kitten, quiet purring, soft pillow ride in their sleeping cars.
Not sure if I have the wording exactly correct, but it's close.
Hope this info answers your question.Daniel
