AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 2

well... It's the time In my life where I have to make that difficult choice *sigh* do I go with a Pentium 4 or a Athlon XP?Orginaly I had planned on getting a Asus asp4b266-wa mobo and a socket 478 P4 @ 2.4GhzBUT! im having second guesses... I have seen people who would swear there life by a AMD cpu( any good sites to see benchmarks?) and many peeps have told me that the way to go is AMD, The latest Athlon XP 2400 @ 2.0Ghz should blow a 2.4GHz p4 away then right? Im very open to advice and I hope you people can help me out. And what mobo would you recommemed? it's gotta have onboard sound. Thanks in advanceBTW: sniper, if you read this, I have a question for ya, Will a P4 2.4Ghz or latest Athlon w/ geforce4 4600 and 512mb DDR ram make PO&N scream?

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

I'd get pentium if I were you. From what I believe...Athlon is faster but Athlon also generates more heat so it just slows it down to a Pentium speed, where as the Pentium doesn't slow down much at all from heat.Adam-------------------------------AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 4Operation Lifesaver Organization -- http://www.oli.org/

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

I run both. I have an AMD 1700+ and a Pentium 4 2.0Ghz. Both run equally stable. Like Pavlov said, about the only noticable difference is price.I have built three systems for other people, and used AMD in all of them. It's cheaper ... period. And they're all happy as clams with the comps I built them.Ray

Here's what I've heard...An AMD Athlon if clocked at 1.5 GHZ will actually have the same performance as a Pentium 3 or 4 at 2.0 GHZ...But I would know, I'm stuck with a "Celery"... ------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to be involved with trains, the Union Pacific!AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 6John Ekhoff

I know your feelings Transcon. I came from a 500Mhz "Celery"(Celeron) to a AMD Athlon XP 1800+. It ROCKS. GO AMD!! Cheaper, and FASTER!.

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

A 2400+ is right below a P4 2.6Ghz. You can just go to Yahoo and try something like "Athlon 2400+ benchmark" and see what shows up. Here's basically what it comes down to though: a 2400+ costs $193. A P4 2.6 Ghz costs $365!!! So really, it's up to you. Now that we're reaching these extreme speeds there's not a lot of difference between the actual performances. Besides, there's always something (mobo, video card, ram, etc) that will bottleneck the performance someplace. Oh, and yeah the Athlon puts out more heat, but that doesn't mean anything. More heat does not equal slower speeds. The only time you'll see something like that matter is if you run the computer without a fan, and if you do that, well...... just don't. Brian p.s. And for the record, I’m running an overclocked 1600+ and have no problem with it. When you look for a motherboard, I suggest something with a Sis chip. They are so stable!

Decided.

AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 9

Well after alot of research, I have Decided Im gonna change my original Mobo and CPU choices.. I've now decided on a Asus asp4s533 mobo and a P4 2.53Ghz w/ 533Mhz FSB.. It's the FSB speed that made me do it, from the benchmarks i see, the athlons lag in FSB, so im gonna go pentium for now.. ah well.. maybe i'll go AMD for my next next system, And thanks to those who helpedAMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 10

RE: Decided.

Shawn,Thats a pity as the '533' bus is only 16 bits wide, so doesn't make much difference. As has been pointed out, the only difference is the price.Derek (XP 1800+ running at 52'C)>Well after alot of research, I have Decided Im gonna change

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

well i built a system 3 months ago, the specs areP4 1.7 GHz
256 MB Rdram (Rambus) "Soon to go up to 1gig or 2"
ATI Radeon 8500 (Considering the new 9700 Pro)
400 W Power Supply
Aluminum Case W 3 Fans installed "2 intake 1 Out-take"
Asus P4T-E Mother Board and even at this the System it self can Grow the Ram can go up to 2 Gigs which i plan on doing, the Processor can go up to 2.4GHz and beyond im considering on going with the 2.4 Gig in January along with 2 Gigs of Memory AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 12

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

Probably the best you can do, from that area, would be to get a dual CPU mobo, assign everything to one chip, then use the other one to run MSTS. Even then that's not really what you're talking about, but it certainly couldn't hurt. As for combining 50 CPU, 50 video cards, etc... no, it's can't be done by us.Brian

AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 13

I don't really see what the fuss is all about; there's nothing wrong with the chips..Intel and AMD have different weaknesses; with AMD it's heating up (apparently), with Intel it's slightly lower performance for your money..As for overclocking your CPU; sure you won't have any problems, just as long as you keep your computer clean, cool, and well-ventilated...
If you really want to improve your CPU performance, you can go and get an Intel I/O processor, which improves performance by offloading I/O operations from your main CPU..http://www.intel.com/design/iio/80321.htmAMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood? – image 14

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

My AMD XP1600+ cost $53 delivered by FedX. It is a 1400 MHz chip running perfectly stable at 1809 MHz and at only 37C.Why pay a couple of hundred $$ for an Intell?Bill

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

If you had an AMD chip and it overheated, I would guess that you didn't have the correct cooling in your system. I've got an Athlon 2000XP running at it's proper speed of 1.67 GHz. So far it hasn't gone about 50 degrees celsius. The same thing would happen to a P4 if you didn't use the correct cooling. Also, as many others have said the P4 doesn't perform very well. As an example, my chip runs at 1.67GHz, yet it would outperform a P4 1.90GHz. To get better performance than the 2000XP in the P4 range you need to get the P4 2.0GHz. With the P4 chips you pay a lot of money for rather average performance. The AMD chips perform better and are cheaper. I also think DDR ram is still better value for money than Rambus.--

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

Well yep, I got something in there, never had it above 40 celius (I think it is a Athlon), and under the right conditions, I've had it running faster then MSTS on the other puter (this has a 750mhz, the other one has a 1ghz intel)

RE: AMD or Intel? what should I put under my hood?

-> INTEL all the way, I kave had AMD chips before and had nothing but problems. the AMD's like to overheat. The only problem I have with this comment is that there's nothing wrong with the AMD chips. Infact, there's nothing to cause instability in either of the chips! What most people don't take into consideration is that it's the chipset on your motherboard that controls everything, and hence that is what makes a computer stable or unstable. There are 3 major players in the chipset world right now - Via, Sis, and nVidia. I've owned both a Via and a Sis and can truly say that I had nothing but problems with the Via. I would have a BSOD at least 5 times a day, then I switched over to the Sis and now, I can go weeks without getting one. The only place where stability comes into play concerning the CPU is with heat, and while yes AMDs run hotter, that doesn't matter. As long as it stays under specifications, then you're fine. Be smart, put a fan on it, and there won't be any problems.Brian
