Let's not forget that CN used to be a Crown Corporation (i.e. onwed and funded by the government). Before they were privatized, CB stank. OR was horrendous, debt load was even worse.. So what made the difference? Having had most of their debt forgiven by the governent, and picking up all their assets for free sure helped the new "public" CN..
If CN was still a Crown Corp, they'd still be where they were, large, bloated and very inefficient, but a haven of job security..
I'm not saying CN hasn't done a good job, just that they had somewhat of an unfair advantage over the other Class 1's..

No the Penn Central will somehow rise from the dead and return to take over the world.

In 1943 a series of allied experiments were undertaken to render a ship invisible to enemy radar, the results of these tests were never released to the public. The finale of these tests which ultimately caused the cancellation of the project was known as: THE PHILADEPHIA EXPERIMENT.

You have to wonder if CN is going the way of Wallyworld (walmart) in taking over everything.I'm a huge CN fan, but I think UP is a larger co. Cn is sure expanding though. They're also removing tracks up here that are not very economic. Plus layoffs.

Yup CN's the best for those reasons but it's certainly not the largest Class 1, I believe it's one rung up from CP in terms of size, making it #5 on size alone. And let's not forget that if they hadn't said no, CN ( & BNSF ) wouldn't have been around today for the article to have been written. Mind you if the CN BNSF merger had gone through, I imagine that would have given the green light to UP and CP to merge their two companies. So for now CN remains king of the pile, but I suspect the merger dragon will raise it's head again. This time we might not be so lucky and some politician will say yes.....

Eh, I'm just waiting for the day when the IC rises up--and you will see those black deathstar Dash-9s with I.C.C.N under the cab window all over Canada (as opposed to the IC engines being painted red and black with the CN noodle, and C.N.I.C under the window).

Doesn't Illinois Central (as well as Wisconsin Central) belong to Canadian National? Yhe system map in TRAINS shows CN service area all across Canada and down into Illinois,Wiconsin and then down to New Orleans, La.Rich

Yep, ICG was acquired, BNSF is on the table, Kansas City, Central Vermont, and might as well suck in those GT lines to 'get back to their roots'. CN can now go as far north as the Northwest Territories, and as far south as Mexico. What was once a Government controlled branch line grab from bankrupt short haulers bloomed into something REALLY big, and getting bigger all the time. Much to CP's chagrin I'm sure. As the saying goes "Once you go 'black', you never go back". ROTFLMAO!

Only reason Tellier got the OR down was forgiven debt.. No other Class I got so much for so little as when CN was privatized..
CN is more dependant on captive grain than we are, it'll be interesting to see how the drought this year will affect them next year when they would normally be moving this year's crop. Also, CN lost their Canpotex potash contract to us this year..
Bigger they are, harder they fall, and we'll be there to pick up the pieces <G>Cheers

Yeah, the IC is now something like a wholly-owned subsidiary or something. . .they get to keep their name to some extent, and the "IC" stuff is now referred to officially as CNIC. You see a lot of locos that have the CN paint scheme, but have CNIC underneath the cab windows--most of those used to be in IC black paint.I was being a little facetious, along the lines of IcyFire above saying that "everyone knows that Conrail, Southern Pacific. .." etc. will come back
