Hi Tim.Been watchin for your BF 1942 server, but haven't seen it. Is it online? Is it ALWAYS online, or only when you are playing? What's the scoop on this deal?? Talk to me ... email me it you would rather talk outside of the forum.I would have emailed you privately, but I thought this may be of interest to others also since there seems to be a pretty good shooter-fan-base here.Thanks.Ray

Hey Ray,We were up last night playing for about 3 hours. We went under WINNIPEGSERVER as the original name would cause the game to restart EVERY time we hit create game.Anyways for now we are running off of one of my co-workers PC's. It was pretty stable last night ( only one lock-up, and it only happened to me )The server is being run off of the computer he is using to game on ( non-dedicated ) and we had 16 people playing and it ran pretty good. There was the odd lag, but nothing unbearable. We should be up and running tonight between 7-8 CMT LaterTim Kent "Power for You"

Hi again Tim.> Anyways for now we are running off of one of my co-workers PC's. It was pretty stable last night ( only one lock-up, and it only happened to me )Can you give me any insight as to what his machine is? (CPU, RAM, Internet connection, etc)I'll try and find you guys tonight!Ray
RE: Tim Kent -- BF 1942 WinnipegZ WinterZ ServerZ ??
In all seriousnees we ran off of a Pentium 4 1.7 256MB Ram Cable internet connection.Everyone ran quite well with the exception of the odd person who logged on from overseas and couldn't figure out why his ping sucked !!PS: People averaged about pings of 100 with him being 0 and me being 4o ( opposite side of the city )Tim Kent "Power for You"

Gee, thanks Tim. Helpful. The reason I was asking is because I am considering running a server for a few people. However, I am kinda new to this sorta stuff and have no idea what works and what doesn't. My home LAN has a file/print server which I could also use as a dedicated game server, but don't want to go to all the trouble if it isn't worth it.EDIT: I was typing this as you were posting your second (slightly more serious) reply. Do you have any idea what the difference in performance is between dedicated and non-dedicated servers?Ray
RE: Tim Kent -- BF 1942 WinnipegZ WinterZ ServerZ ??
Non-dedicated servers are when you host and play on teh same computer. Dedicated servers are when the server is just hosting teh game, and clients join up using other computers. I learned all that from my experiences with Tribes 2, anyone have it?

Thanks, but I understand the difference between dedicated and non-dedicated. What I am wondering is the PERFORMANCE DIFFERENCE between the two while playing.Ray
RE: Tim Kent -- BF 1942 WinnipegZ WinterZ ServerZ ??
We tried it, Rob ran the server as dedicated for me to test out that theory and my pings went from 40 down to 10-20Huge difference !!Dedicated servers are the way to go provided you either haveA) No desire to actually play the gameB) Have a second PC to run on.With the band starting to play now, I am looking at my next system more closelyP4 2.8 ( or whatever's big in 2 months ) 512RAM ( at least ) GeForce 4 128MB video RamThis would be my Train-Sim / Online " WAR " game server PC I will just upgrade my current Athalon 1.4 that I am using now and connect to games on my own server.Battlefield 1942 Operation Flashpoint Medal of Honor America's Army Day of Defeat Combat Flight Sim 2 / 3 Pretty much whatever I feel like playing.PS: So I guess what I am getting at is, if you have a decent PC to run the game off of ( dedicated server ) and you can connect to that server from another machine, the game will run alot better.Like I said also though , we were NON-dedicated most of the night and still ran pretty solid.Later Tim Kent "Power for You"
