RE: Anyone want smoked rib grilled on an SF C33?

I've seen that happen. I saw a Conrail train, going through Port Clinton Ohio in the late 80's, it was the 3rd unit on the train. I first noticed that alot of black smoke came out of the stack then a huge flame. I thought maybe the unit was blowing the engine. Happy Rails Patrick

Ex-roommate over here was lookin out the window over towards the yard; they had just dragged a GP38 out of the shop, and were testing the engine in neutral at full throttle.. He claims that the engine made a loud 'bang' and flames shot 12' straight up out of the exhaust...
----------if you jump from dynamic braking to forward in an EMD this happens? hmm.. Must've blown out my engine a dozen times on Marias Pass... Now I've seen it all...Except Dynamic Brake Blowout..Hmm..
And just the other day, they were testing another engine in full throttle/neutral...At first wispy white smoke was comin out, then it turned blue, faded to brown and then gray; before it started to dissipate...Anyone want smoked rib grilled on an SF C33? – image 21

RE: Anyone want smoked rib grilled on an SF C33?

It's most likely caused by an over-rich fuel/air mixture, which means some of the fuel doesn't burn in the cylinder. So now we have atomized fuel being blown out a very hot exhaust manifold. There's also a possibility that a over-lean fuel/air mixture might also cause that to happen. Either way, unburnt fuel is being blown thru a hot exhaust manifold.John G

>John G An over-lean mix can definitely not be. Diesel engines always run lean. In fact, air charge is always full, and the throttle regulates diesel fuel quantity only. So, when not fully throttled, the mix is always lean.Actually, even if the mix is a little rich, that's pratically impossible. It must be associated to a major problem, like one or more exhaust valves stuck slightly open during power stroke due to faulty lubrication. The combustion leaks out of the cylinder and burns the unburned fuel in the exhaust too.

RE: Anyone want smoked rib grilled on an SF C33?

You are absolutely right. It can't be mixture. i wondered if it could be a massive build up of soot which then ignites, in much the same was as a house chimney fire.

So if an engine that just came out of the shop spewed flames 12' or so up in the air..Would it be the mechanics' fault? Or does that just happen by chance?
Last night they were testing an engine, something was knocking/scraping VERY loudly..Sounded as if were gonna blow at any moment Anyone want smoked rib grilled on an SF C33? – image 47

Could this be Amtrak's solution to trains running late? A little JP8 in the tank,
hold on tight, and put it in 8 so you won't be late!

At the San Diego Railroad Museum, we ran for years on donated JetA. As far as a diesel engine is concerned, Jet Fuel is just really nice diesel. (also, practically no smoke)
More 'n likely, this engine was in the process of eating a piston and f**ting it out thru the turbo. We had the same thing happen to an RS-3 once. Nice catch on the photo, the event lasts about 5 seconds before everything is enveloped in white smoke.

Now that everyone has stated what they think it is this is the real answer. This GE has a blown turbocharger.Yes it will do this when the turbocharger isn't operating correctly. It's not as bad on EMD products as it is on the GE's.Thank goodness for EMD products. We need more of them here in the library.

Now that fits right in with an idea I've had for awhile now. You know how many crazy idiots there are driving our streets and highways. I got this idea to mount three flame throwers in my vehicle. One pointed straight back and one pointing out on each side. The three flame jets would be remote controlled from the driver seat. Then if one of those idiots starts tailgaiting you or is about pass you and blow you off the road, just give a couple shots of the flame and see what he does! So, you ask, what does this have to do with railroading? Well you could do it at a railroad crossing!Cal Rasmussen

Saw a Union Pacific Dash-8 do the same thing 3 years back, on a school bus 2 miles away and you could see the flames as clear as day, I knew that it was probely just fuel not combusting in the cylinders or nothing dangerous, but some of those kids did duck below the windows.

I can't speak for the unit in the picture but back in 1995 when the SP C44-9W's (8100 - 8200) were new they would often throw up a flame out of the exhaust when advancing the throttle. Eventually GE fixed the problem but the cause was unburnt fuel being expelled out of the exhaust stroke and later ignited by the hot exhaust gases. As for older GE units I've seen some units belched out thick black smoke when advancing the throttle that would make you think it was a steam engine or a smoke screen generator.>I knew that if you jump from dynamic breaking to foward in an EMD that it would do this.TexasWestern70Mac I have no idea what you meant by that but if you mean changing from Dynamic Braking to Throttle mode then no kind of flame should shoot out of the exhaust because when you change modes you are only changing electrical modes (in laymans terms). This is C40-8W 934, digging in on the Huey P. Long bridge in New Orleans. According to the engineer, C40s that have been souped up to 4135hp have a tendancy to do this, especially in notch 5.

RE: Like this?

I was up close and personal once when a NS dash 9 did that. Happened to be standing beside the tracks when I saw a load of sickly blue smoke come belching up the track. The engine in question was the number two unit and it was merrily coughing blue smoke out its stack. Well, as it drew closer, there was a very loud BOOM! followed by black smoke and a big flash of flame that blew two of the side doors open and sent a flame high enough to scorch the road overpass. The engine in question got deathly silent, though smoke kept billowing out of that thing, even after they shunted it on a siding to figure out what happened.I wish I had a camera with me back then, but I still laugh when I think of it. That nine died a very HARD death.
