Hi, Form what i have read Santa Fe, in the early 80's i believe, had a severe lack of switchers, yet had a surpuls of F7. They embarked on a rebuild plan in which they rebuilt a new loco from teh frame of the old F7's. I believe these where done in their shops in Texas. I'm not sure of teh final number build but they were exclusive to Santa Fe, until they started seeling them off to shortlines. Keith

Actually, most (all?) of the CF7s were rebuilt using new frames. The frames on the original F7s (and other early "covered wagons") were fairly light since structural members inside the carbody helped carry the weight/load of the unit. The ATSF shops at Cleburne, Texas built a total of 233 of these units before completing the project. (And running out of rebuild candidates!)Henry
Actually my book says that in the 1970s AT&SF went through a massive rebuilding program to turn 233 tired old F-7s into Gleaming new CF-7s using GEEP hoods, underframes, and parts but most of the CF-7s work for many small railroads or maybe sunbathe in the scrap yard
