RE: Paging Sniper

Nope. I didn't make the logo, Kevin "Cadman" Shea made it. As far as where he got the original picture I never asked, but doing an internet search for "catdog" turns up a lot of hits:http://www.nickelodeon.com.au/toonroom/catdog/characters.html
Newbie tip alert, put your cursor over a webpage picture and RIGHT click on it, that will bring up a window to save that image to your disk.

RE: Paging Sniper

"Everyone is ignorant, only in different areas" -Mark Twain
I've been fooling around with computers since the punch card days when they were nothing but overgrown adding machines, and I still learn something new every day. Graphic Arts is an entirely different thing, but like hacking computers and getting to Carnegie Hall the secret is the same for all - practice, practice, practice.
I don't have the original logo he made either, but reverse engineering what he did I could make one - take that image, rotate it slightly and cut the dialogue balloons out, then type over it with the text and adjust for fit. The other option is open the ace for something he skinned with it in TGAtool2, like PO&N SD-40 #18 for the cleanest copy.Paging Sniper – image 7
Save the little beggar as something else;Paging Sniper – image 8
Resize the image larger if it will stand it;Paging Sniper – image 9
What you do next depends on what you want to do, once you're familiar with image editing tools you can copy and paste as wierd as you want;Paging Sniper – image 10
Unless you're pasting your stolen logo on something else that's green and black, it would reguire getting rid of the background;Paging Sniper – image 11
Starting with the color replacer brush and ending with the eraser tool;Paging Sniper – image 12
How much you clean it up depends on what you're pasting it over, if you choose "paste as transparent selection", the white areas won't cover the rest of the texture. Probably easier and neater to duplicate what he did by rotating the original image then putting text over that, and if you want to make your own logos you gotta learn that anyway.
Hmmm, you just gave me an idea. IGOR! My paintbrush and toxic chemicals!

RE: Paging Sniper

I didn't have to do all that? Really? NOW ya tell me, I already uploaded it!Paging Sniper – image 15
Hee-hee, "all of that", referring to the image editing and posting, took about 5 minutes, and it's good practice. Reskinning the car took about an hour, including cloning the US2freightcar3, doing a websearch for The Simpsons (I got DSL), all the graphics work, writing the readme file, and having my youngest son beta test the installation. Practice, practice, practice. And I needed a break from that unholy route editor anyway.
Thanks for giving me the idea.

RE: Paging Sniper

Hee-hee, thanks for the clear, sharp logo, Bob! Copied, stolen, and serial numbers filed off! Oughtta make that pea soup green more of an orange-yellow, Cadman just grabbed the BN colors, JohnF preferred orange & black and did the Pioneer engine in red & yellow, but since I lived most of my life next to the C&NW, I like green & yellow. Don't really matter, it ain't exactly a first-class high iron railroad, and the prototype secondary roads frequently change their paint schemes and often end up with a mix of colors and paint schemes. So as far as reskinning for the PO&N, anything goes! AM_Road, I was wondering when this was gonna come up, wouldn't be surprised if the FBI took a look at me in all this, but I got an alibi - haven't left Chicago, never been to Washington DC.I was never actually a military sniper, and am really only an average marksman with rifle or pistol. My military MOS was Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Tech, US Navy, my primary job was chasing Russian subs around the North Atlantic with the AN/AQS-13-A dip sonar in the Sikorsky SH-3D heavy ASW helicopter.

Me, about 20 some years ago, USS America or USS Independence, I forget which (can't even remember exactly what year!). My "official" service nickname, if there is such a thing, was "Ratman" (don't ask), and when the DOOM network servers first came out I used that, but for some strange reason there were a whole bunch of guys using Ratman back then. Since my preferred style was hiding and waiting in ambush, I got tagged with Sniper, and it's been my online "handle" ever since.

You'll be fine Sniper - they've got to find the other 296 before they come looking for you Seriously though I do hope they manage to catch this evil individual before he/she wrecks any more people's lives. It must be awful not being able to go out into ones own neighbourhood in broad daylight without fearing for ones safety.Bill

Personally I hope they have a large dog rip their balls off, it's not as much as they deserve. Latest dope I've heard is firming up my suspicion that this is Al Quaida types trying a different tactic.
While I somewhat sympathize with the people who live in the DC suburbs, it's nothing really different from inner city life in America's "Alabaster Cities", tho. When the gangs are having their drug turf wars it ain't safe for a kid to play in his own backyard for several years on end, and the idea that an elementary school kid might bring a gun to school is something we live with every day.

Hee-hee, actually they referred to that as "sniper" style for deathmatch in the Quake and Unreal series also, Quake-2 was a lot of fun with that "one shot one kill" railgun they had! I dunno what they're calling it these days, I'm 49 years old now, and Quake-3 moved so fast and my reflexes were getting so slow I was usually "gibbed" before I had a chance to find a decent sniper post! So I don't deathmatch anymore, scheming brains used to beat youthful reflexes, but at the frantic pace of Quake-3 that no longer applied. Can't draw a bead on a mach 2 target! Still have fun with the AI bad guys in Quake-2, and maybe one of these days I'll find a little old ladies group for the new "America's Army" I can fit in with!
