Jul-21-01, 02:13 PM (EST) 1. "RE: a diesel amtrak pulling cars and a electic acela?" It could have been taken during the recent problems with the catenary on the NEC, and the diesel is being used as a temporary engine until the train gets back to an area of functioning catenary. Jul-22-01, 04:47 PM (EST) 2. "RE: a diesel amtrak pulling cars and a electric acela?" I don't see any attribution to the photo. But I think it was published on Jeff and Josh Lubinsky's (sp) site or on the Oaks model RR site..... If I remember the caption from the original it is a picture of some of the work up/testing of the HHL/HHP-8 and the F40 on the A$$ end is their to provide controlled resistance..... However I will note that it is not unusual to "tow" an electric train with diesels when the catenary is down/being worked on.... Happened to me on the July 4th weekend while riding to Boston from Washington on the Shoreliner.... Around Port Chester or so (I was half asleep as it was about 4am... we wnt dead for a few mins and then they coupled on a pair of F40s to the front of our "toaster" and towed us to New Haven where they cut out the "toaster".... They were doing construction on the wire near the NY-CT border and had the wire de-energized...... They key here was that the "toaster" was on the front and the F40s were in front of it......

Jul-22-01, 04:50 PM (EST) 3. "RE: a diesel amtrak pulling cars and a electric acela?" The interesting thing here is that the Red Markers on the Winnebago (why not it looks like one) show that it is in fact the end of the train.... ergo it is being towed! I remember reading about some early "teething" problems with this loco so maybe you've got a pix of one of the early "engineering challenges"??????? Jul-23-01, 03:51 PM (EST) 5. "RE: a diesel amtrak pulling cars and a electic acela?" Odds are very high that the train is not being towed, and good that it really isn't even a diesel at the other end. Oh it looks like an F40 all right, but there have been many of them which have been de-engined with a thick concrete floor providing ballast in the former engine room. The former engine room becomes baggage space (roll up door on the side of the "locomotive" is a dead give away) and the cab remains as a way to operate the train in push mode from the leading end. The Cascade Talgo service operates with on of the "cabbages" (cab + baggage) on one end and a true locomotive on the other end and the trains run back and forth without being turned. If the train in the picture was being towed, the pan would have been lowered, dead locomotives with pans up are just asking for trouble. It is also possible to MU through the train and have both locomotives active.Another possibility is that the diesel is really a locomotive and that they have been testing with the electric pulling and the diesel in dynamic braking to provide added drag and are either done or are backing up to try again. Jul-23-01, 07:42 PM (EST) 6. "RE: a diesel amtrak pulling cars and a electic acela?" All true except I have not seen any HHPs operating with a Cabbage yet.... The only Cabbages that I know of on the NEC (Except maybe on the Springfield branch) is/are the one(s) attached to a P40 out of Boston-North Station being used to train crews for the Down Easter startup... to Maine....
The only thing I have ever even seen a picture of like this was during the break in/Testing of the HHP and the F-40 was their to provide controlled resistance to the HHP and to tow it back home at the end of the day or if anything went wrong.... Check the Oaks Model RR site or Jeff and Josh L.'s site and you will see at least one pix of this lash up.... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-24-01, 09:00 PM (EST) 7. "RE: a diesel amtrak pulling cars and a electic acela?" By the way, FYI, A Winnebago is a Motor Home with a unique "streamline look" to it that can be seen on the highways of the US, Canada and Mexico.... If you ever saw one you can see why some people refer to the HHP8 as a Winnebago... <g> Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-05-01, 11:41 PM (EST) 9. "RE: a diesel amtrak pulling cars and a electic acela?" what it is happende to me the same kind of thing what happens is the locomotive breaks down but instead of trying to fix it on the spot or drop all the people off at the next station they just add another engine to pull or finish the job so that they wont loose profit what happened to me when i was in sacramento going to bakersfield their was a f59ph and normal 2story passanger cars but what happened it broak down so since bnsf owned san joaquine they sent an engine down there coupled it on and finshed the route for saftey and not to loose profit it happende to me like 2 years ago Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
