Jul-20-01, 06:23 PM (EST) 1. "RE: HO Track" MSTS is a real train simulator, not a model train simulator. The spacing between real tracks is 196.25 inches. In HO scale, the spacing between model tracks is 2.25 inches but if you use sectional track and switches, the spacing between tracks vary between 2 and 3 inches. Jeffrey. Sep-07-01, 10:53 AM (EST) 4. "RE: HO Track" i have literally miles and miles of HO track leftover from my childhood. mostly the brassy colored rails with some of the nickel colored ones. i even got alot of that new snap together track. it sure is alot easier than doing it the old fashioned way having to draw out a schematic on the layout board to get the track laid right and not having the final piece end up being inches off from the first piece and having to rip it all out and relay it again. but thats whats so fun about it

Sep-07-01, 11:20 AM (EST) 5. "RE: HO Track" LAST EDITED ON Sep-07-01 AT 11:21 AM (EST)Also depends on curve radius and what you're gonna run on it. Two A-B-B-A + 85 foot passenger car trains passing each other on a 22 inch radius inside curve are gonna need all the room you can give them, but two 0-6-0 pulling 30 foot ore cars consists on a 34 inch minimum you could just about overlap the ties on the inside and outside curves without knocking anything together. A "Dremel" tool with a bunch of cutoff disks costs about 50 bucks at sears, takes a bunch of practice to learn to use without constantly shattering the disks and having to replace them (replacements come in boxes of like 30 as I recall) but it does a real neat job of cutting the rails to length without distorting or leaving a bunch of burrs on the ends. Also, if you're building a big layout, take all the brass track to the scrap dealer. Nickel silver costs a little more, but you'll spend a lot more time running trains on it and a lot less time cleaning track with a brite boy and railzip. All that said, who the hell has time to build HO layouts these days when MSTS editor, for all it's quirks and bugs, gives you the equivelant of McCormick Place to build whatever size layout you want? Saves having to spend 500 bucks on one of those front loading washers so you can still do your laundry after building a yard over the top of the washer and dryer, and you don't have to dimantle part of the layout to change the furnace filters.
