I probably shouldn't do this and may get flamed by others but this has been bugging me for a while. Usually you do the question asking but I have some for you.1. Are you really 17 years old? Sometimes you make posts that sound like someone younger.2. Were you born in the United States because in some of your posts you use the terms "shunting" and "bogey"? I though you reside in PA?3. Most of your posts are in the general forum and some are general in nature not releated to railroading. Rarely do you ask questions about MSTS. That is your right but it seems a bit odd.4. Finally, you wouldn't be a terrorist plotting against railroads would you? (If you are I don't expect you to say yes) Man you ask a hell of a lot of questions about railroading. You started with, would it be ok to get in a locomotive cab when no one is looking, to what does this and that do, and now we are at railroad communications. You made the following statements recently which I find odd:I think the builders of the WTC were just stupid for making it so much taller than the other buildings, they practically made it into a target for planes!Like my teacher said and I agree that when the next terrorist attack is on the U.S. which there will be one then all the attack areas will be forgotten in the news and then it'll be the new areas that've been attacked.Just personal opinions of a 17 year old Adam? I hope so.I don't mean to offend you asking these questions but since 9/11/01 ALL OF US should be a little more aware of our surroundings. We should not live in fear but we should be on the lookout for suspicious activity. Seems like you would understand that if you actually live only a mile from the Flight 93 crash site. Hopefully you are just a very curious young man with a lot of questions and some odd ways.To everyone else here on the forum pardon me for being possibly a bit annoying and to the forum moderators this is a legitimate question and not a flame.PatchCrew

RE: Question For Adam (I_Totally_Love_Trains)

LAST EDITED ON Sep-15-02 AT 01:04 AM (EDT)

I'm not Adam, PatchCrew, but I was struck by your post. I, too, have found I_T_L_T's posts a little unusual, with something strange in his speech patterns - syntax a little odd, but perfect spelling and mature vocabulary. No offense intended on my part, either, Adam ... but stranger things have happened. It might seem goofy, even paranoid, but I'll bet money the 9/11 wackos checked out on Flight Simulator. And if I wanted to do damage to or with a locomotive ...If I remember correctly, PatchCrew, your own employer refused to cooperate with the development of MSTS for just this reason ... and that was pre-9/11.What really caught my attention was Adam's question about whether conversations in the cab might inadvertently be broadcast and overheard!? Oh, well, I've probably been reading too many 9/11 pieces in the New York Times. But the fact is, Zacharius Moussoui started his flight training right here in Oklahoma, at the Airman school at Westheimer Field in Norman. My son takes flying lessons at Westheimer, too, though in OU's aviation school; and he and Moussoui were probably in the landing pattern at the same time. A friend of mine lost a son, a young investment banker, on 9/11. Another goofy bastard destroyed the Murrah Building right here in OKC, blowing all the windows out of my office, two and a half blocks away, and killing and injuring friends of mine. Ain't no such thing as far away anymore.

I rarely post questions about MSTS (--oops forgot RE was MSTS ~laugh~ so I do post questions) I do post about it, however. I use the terms 'bogey' & 'shunting' and I'm from Maine. It all depends I think on where you learnt the terminology and from whom. He does, however, sound like he's a different age than 17. His posts for example about his school and 9-11 and 9-11 observances are not high school posts rather they are middle school to junior high posts. I haven't read his other posts, so I can't speak on them. However, the things you mention in here would make one wonder. If you feel that someone here or anywhere else is acting in a suspicious manner, report it. It is reasonable that people have their main focus now on the events of 9/11 and not be a terrorist, it was a traumatic event. When I grew up it was VietNam and Kennedy's assassination. I had a cousin that couldn't stop talking about either, even long after they happened. (I was three at the time Kennedy died and I remember when I was five that they even threatened to institutionalize him. It was just his way of dealing with both things.)However, having said that, his comment about his teacher, doesn't go over well. Teachers by and large will not make comments that could upset and scare students, it could cost them their job and is irresponsible.I agree with the other post here, the terrorists had to have used Flight Sim or another flight simulator to negotiate the skyline in NY City and elsewhere. The rest of their knowledge came from flight schools in Florida. The railroads are vulnerable. I look out the window at the Springfield Terminal here and you can simply walk from my house, down the road and across into the yard without being stopped or questioned. That bothers the hell out of me. I don't want to see any of these people at the yard hurt or anyone else hurt either. In other words, I don't have any answers for you at all.

I probably shouldn't do this and may get flamed by others but this has been bugging me for a while. Usually you do the question asking but I have some for you.1. Are you really 17 years old? Sometimes you make posts that sound like someone younger.Answer: Yes, ask my parents if you don't believe me.2. Were you born in the United States because in some of your posts you use the terms "shunting" and "bogey"? I though you reside in PA?Answer: Yes, I was born in the U.S.A. and I still reside in the U.S.A. I often use the term bogie because I forget about the word trucks here in the U.S. and I thought shunting was a U.S. word. A reminder that I don't know everything about trains yet.3. Most of your posts are in the general forum and some are general in nature not releated to railroading. Rarely do you ask questions about MSTS. That is your right but it seems a bit odd.Answer: I don't really understand this question but I'll try to answer it to the best of my ability. I don't talk about MSTS because I don't play it but the General Forum is for railroading questions, we have to all admit we have all made off topic posts in the general forum.4. Answer: I'm a innocent, young, and very nice young man. I was wondering about getting in the train cab when no one was around because I want some pictures of me in the engineer's seat, I would only do such a thing when my Dad was with me. My name explains what my basic life is.You made the following statements recently which I find odd:I think the builders of the WTC were just stupid for making it so much taller than the other buildings, they practically made it into a target for planes!Like my teacher said and I agree that when the next terrorist attack is on the U.S. which there will be one then all the attack areas will be forgotten in the news and then it'll be the new areas that've been attacked.Just personal opinions of a 17 year old Adam? We should not live in fear but we should be on the lookout for suspicious activity. Seems like you would understand that if you actually live only a mile from the Flight 93 crash site. Hopefully you are just a very curious young man with a lot of questions and some odd ways.Answer: I'm a curious and very nice young man, just ask my Dad that, he even calls me a curious and young man.To everyone else here on the forum pardon me for being possibly a bit annoying and to the forum moderators this is a legitimate question and not a flame.Answer: That's ok with me, it's your right to ask these kinds of questions. To user name 'sooner' (without the 's): I was just curious if you could overhear conversation in the cab of a train. In my very own opinion that flight instructor of them terrorists was stupid in fact because he let them terrorists learn how only to fly in the air, not to land, takeoff, etc. and obviously that would be only what a terrorist wants! My one teacher also said that the white border around a U.S. stop sign means you only have to pause there not stop, and that's very incorrect. He said it was only a joke he made up but any kid that believed it could be seriously hurt or killed! He's a driver's ed teacher.Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. Well folks,I'd come to another conclusion, thinking Adam was an older person, acting like a younger one. This too was arrived at by his grasp of letters, and some of his very mature replies.
Perhaps we're all wrong, and he's a young man like he says he is.Personally I don't care, and didn't until this series of posts appeared, and caught my interest.

Adam also take notice that you never use the word "those". Do you understand my last sentence?PatchCrew

No AlphaMaster not the word "such". I used "such and such" as to mean fill in the blank with a word. I was stating that our words are English words not U.S. words.

You, know, I thought that a long, long time ago, Adam had a different signature that said something like "14 year old train fan." But that must have been a while ago. Or maybe I am getting this Adam confused with the other Adam. And BTW, here in northern Virginia, you go to high school when you enter ninth grade. So it is possible for him to be 14 and be in high school.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-02 AT 04:18 PM (EDT)

I go to Shanksville Stonycreek High School in Shanksville, PA and my name is Adam Palya. I'm in 10th grade Tech Prep classes.TranTrak5000, you are accusing me of being another Adam, I saw that other user's signature on another Adam but that's not me.I suppose the terrorist reasons are why I didn't get as many fast replies to my latest questions as I have been too. Let me tell you something, I don't go through my young life worrying about terrorism, if something is going to happen it's going to happen, there's nothing we can do to stop it and that's what my whole family thinks. By the way my signature will be supporting the U.S. this whole month of September so why would you even think I'm a terrorist?Another thing, you question me about English? There's nothing called U.S. Language. When I was in elementary grades I was taught something called English that's spoken in the U.S. Now I take something called Applied Communications in my 10th grade class that I have now.If you still don't believe that I'm not a terrorist and I'm not 17 years old go to www.sssd.com and call my school and they'll tell you the truth! And yes, you maybe surprised but the picture on the homepage of the website on www.sssd.com is the school I attend and the only school in or near Shanksville, PA.If I showed you a picture of me you wouldn't believe me either, I just got my Jr. Driver's License, finally my Dad let me after a year of experience and anyway the guy at the gas station at the pay desk was like are you old enough to drive and I said yea and I paid. He said my gas of $10.51 was 31.50 and he said he always gets kids my age with that kind of trick because I didn't believe it at first. The point is if you saw a picture of me you'd think I'm 14 because I look like it.Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. >I'm in 10th grade Tech Prep classes.Ok 10th grade and 17 years old. Hmm.>I suppose the terrorist reasons are why I didn't get as many fast replies to my latest questions as I have been too.You ask a lot of questions and when someone answers 2 of your questions, you ask 5 more. The amount of questions is just a little bit annoying. It's as if you are trying to learn EVERYTHING about trains and railroading as fast as you can. What's the rush?>Another thing, you question me about English? There's nothing called U.S. Language.Yea that's what I said.>When I was in elementary grades I was taught something called English that's spoken in the U.S.Something called English huh that's spoken in the U.S.? Another strange statement. If you don't understand Adam it sounds like you were taught English in another country or you were born in another country when you make a statement like that. At least to me it does. We don't learn how to SPEAK English in school. Aren't you still taking English classes in High School? What were you taught in regards to your statement above? Thanks Adam for answering my questions but I have to say I'm just as confused as ever.PatchCrew

I'm 17 years old and in 10th grade because I failed 2nd grade.
If I don't get my questions answered it kind of bothers me in my sleep, seriously.
I took a class called English when I was in elementary but now I take applied communications in tenth grade.
No problem with the questions, I love answering questions that aren't too personal. If you got more, keep them coming at me!

Question For Adam (I_Totally_Love_Trains) – image 23

Sorry but I have to agree with the guys on this one, Adam's use of English and some of the questions he's asked have made me wonder before. I'm 21 years old, and in high school I took 4 years of English. (Required, English was the only thing you HAD to have 4 years of.) By the time I was 17 (which would have been my senior year actually) I think I had our language down. True enough, I speak Texan more often than the king's English, but that's more or less expected.Hopefully the kid is who he says he is, and to be quite honest a terrorist plot against a train wouldn't be worth their time or effort. Highjack a moving train? Not like you could bring a strategic building down, besides...you'd be derailed before you could do any damage. Re: the WTC towers, it was not stupid to build them taller than the other buildings in New York. At that time there was still at least a small amount of pride in the United States of America and having the tallest and arguably the most important buildings in the world was a national asset. I wonder who's teaching history in our classes today, but there was a small competition going on called the Cold War, and America was exploring, building, spending as if she was the greatest nation on the face of the Earth (and she was/is). The REAL stupidity was perpetuated by the tree-hugging hippie wackos who insisted that the asbestos fireproofing be removed and replaced with a much less effective material. IMHO if you want it ripped out, you damn well better have a replacement that meets or exceeds it's predecessor's specifications. It's an argument that'll never be won. The buildings fell and we must live in a world where 9-11 will always be synonymous with the year 2001 and tragedy rather than 9-11-1786 and the Articles of Confederation. I see one thing here I do want to take issue with. There is a mightly big thing we can do to stop this stuff. I think each and every person should be prepared and ready to interrupt and stop any act of terror or sabotoge they may stumble across. We can't just look the other way, can't depend on the other guy to take care of it. If you observe someone doing something which seems out of line, don't ignore it, report it.
Now if someone has any thoughts about trying to assualt me personally, don't expect it to be fun, you may get more than you want. I am more angry than terrified. I am certainly not looking for a brawl, but don't expect me to capitulate without a fight if you instigate violence. I think most Americans want peace and harmony in the world, and I know I don't wish any group or nation harm. But if attacked, I also expect the United States and its people will defend the land tenaciously.
Please don't assess this as arrogance, I respect and appreciate people of other countries, and wish all nations prosperity and health. The road (or RR) to that goal is not by destroying the those we don't understand, but rather by learning more about the common aspirations we all share as human residents on this rather tiny sphere. Better we get together to build a better planet, than rip it apart so that all are brought to shared destitution.
My thoughts,
Bob

RE: Question For Adam (I_Totally_Love_Trains)

While we're on the terrorist issue: In my opinion, if someone wanted to hijack a train, they wouldn't get very far. It wouldn't take too long for someone to catch on. The biggest threat regarding trains would probably be someone messing with the rails or signals.
I believe we as railfans have our own small resposibility of watching out for suspicous activity on or near the rails and reporting anything that could mean danger to trains and train crews.
Just my 2 cents. Jordan L.

I also want peace and freedom in the U.S.A. because that's what we are. I just wish the terrorism would stop! In my one school class today we read a story in applied communications that was called The Monkey's Paw but the wishes had strings attached in the story. It was based on everyone making three wishes and everyone in the class was told if we had three wishes with no strings attached what would they be, we got time to think, and one of mine and one of the other kids first wish was STOP the terrorism! But you are wrong in saying you couldn't use a train for terrorist purposes. When I was at my Grandma's over summer vacation I watched a show called Derailed on TLC (The Learning Channel) and a tanker chemical train derailed, they got it cleaned up fine but about 40 years later the chemicals starting taking effect and killing all the animals in farms nearby and even some people!Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. I'm glad this issue seems to be settled now because I am what I told you.
But you guys that say a terrorist attack on a train would be yard, it wouldn't be hard at all. I saw on a derailed show at night terrorists kicked up a rail off of the track and derailed a Amtrak Train, they can do the same with a freight. Or they can just do like our recent terrorists in the attacks did, train for a train job, become a conductor, wait till you become a engineer, and then derail a biohazard train. Of course, I'm probably talking thinking it's easier than it really is.I don't believe the recent terrorist attacks terrorists were helped by Microsoft Flight Simulator, Flight Simulator, even in the 2002 edition doesn't have near as many buildings as NYC has when you fly over the city in MSFS. Even if they did you couldn't learn to fly from MSFS but I think these terrorist attacks will now limit the amount of options that we'll be getting in versions of MSFS in the future.Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. I have never done anything like this in a post before, but I guess there is a first time for everything.Am I angry?
YES.... too darn right I'm angry.WHY can't you all take a person (Adam) at face value.
If you had read his posts properly, he does not have MSTS on his computers for reasons he has explained and spends most of his time asking very legitimate and unusual questions here on the Forum, showing he has an inquiring mind, pity a few others are not like it. Not here trying to assassinate others characters because he SOUNDS different.
One speaks of equal rights, and to care about your fellow man, as yourself.
Hmmmmm.... I..... wonder.....From were I sit, Adam see things as he sees them, and says what comes to mind, quite often very simply, by maybe too simple for some here and he puts it in writing here on the Forum.
WHAT the hell's wrong with that. I'm at a loss here.No one is forced to answer him, but a lot here at the Forum do and converse with him properly.
I for one, from time to time and take Adam for Adam. I am totally stunned by some in this thread. The attitude is totally wrong.
Sorry if I may have upset others here, but this has really upset me. Enough said please.ADAM,
I take you at face value, so stick with it here young man.
Don't let any of this get at you. I admire your curiosity and wanting to learn about things, reminds me of myself some 44 years ago.Question For Adam (I_Totally_Love_Trains) – image 25

RE: STUNNED (I_Totally_Love_Trains)

I gotta agree with darkhorse. In the grand scale of possible railroad/equipment
questions, most all have been pretty much generic, and the answers to many
could be easily found (in a lot more detail) from other sources. If the questions were
a little more pointed, like how do I set the breakers, switches, and bears, oh my
to make it go chug chug, then I'd worry a bit. As for arming the crews, I recall a
rearend brakeman (back in the caboose days) that always carried 2 lunch pails.
One for his biscuits and gravy, the other one for his .38.

Adam, I was hoping you would answer, as I said in my last post above.

Don't let any of this get at you. Please still put your questions here on the Forum, as there are others here like Darkhorse2 and myself who WILL take you, for you, and WILL answer you as best and if we can, and not read into things that are not literally written there. Your inquiring Questions, and any answers given here, may just help some of us who are interested to LEARN something new, even if it is from a different point of view, no matter and what manner a question is put. We all keep learning till the day we kick the bucket. Maybe LEARNing is not in some people's vocabulary these days. Stick with it here Adam.Just continue being yourself, and enjoy watching those freights fly through the Johnstown Train Station. Give the crew a wave for me, if they are the nice guys they will wave back, if not, so what, at least YOU gave them a friendly wave.
Enjoy your day, and will see you later here at the forum.... Question For Adam (I_Totally_Love_Trains) – image 26

Thanks!
I will be going to the train station if it doesn't rain, we just got a motherload of rain and lightning all this morning non-stop heavy rain and that ended some of the drought here.Do the crews watch the fans for waving and do they usually stick their hand out the cab window?Since the engineer may be on the other side of the train where I can't see do they stick their hand up above the roof and wave to you or isn't that possible? There's a signal tower right near the train station so would it be likely that they'd wave out the window since they might forget to stick it back in and get it ripped off then? It's very very unsual to see trains with a helper on going through the Johnstown Train Station because it's all flat there. I've saw a few there with helpers on, what's the point of them being on there other than it's easy for them to wave to you and for you to wave back?If you move your fist up and down vertically at a train when it goes by will the engineer blow the horn?A lot of freights at the Johnstown Station go flying through on the one track and then 15 minutes later one comes the opposite way of the last one on the same track. How's that possible without wrecking? Why is there a coupling speed on a train, why does a train knock the car off of the tracks, what's so important about a coupling speed?Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. RE: Adam (I_Totally_Love_Trains) Stay with it here

I haven't been in here for a while so I will try some of these questions. By the way, most of us were 17 once and were as curious as you. Thomas Edison was chided for asking so many questions. Thanks to him we have light bulbs, General Electric, Talking movies, and Dash 9's and jet engines.
Do the crews watch the fans for waving and do they usually stick their hand out the cab window?Answer: Remember, engineers are not on sightseeing trips. There is much to see just as paying attention when operating a motor vehicle. There are whistle posts, speed limit signs and most important, SIGNALS!! So if an engineer doesn't always wave, he may be busy doing his job. Then some have have bad experiences with "foamers" and will not wave.
Since the engineer may be on the other side of the train where I can't see do they stick their hand up above the roof and wave to you or isn't that possible? If you are on the other side from the engineer, most likely he will not wave and most certainly not get out of the window far enough to "wave over the roof."
There's a signal tower right near the train station so would it be likely that they'd wave out the window since they might forget to stick it back in and get it ripped off then?Answer: They would have to lean very far out of the window to get hit by the signal tower. It's very very unsual to see trains with a helper on going through the Johnstown Train Station because it's all flat there. I've saw a few there with helpers on, what's the point of them being on there other than it's easy for them to wave to you and for you to wave back?Answer: There must be a ruling grade somewhere near Johnstown that requires the extra power just to get over the grade but not for the rest of the trip.
If you move your fist up and down vertically at a train when it goes by will the engineer blow the horn?Answer: If the engineer sees you and he is not busy and he likes rail fans. Just make sure you do not act like a "foamer!"
A lot of freights at the Johnstown Station go flying through on the one track and then 15 minutes later one comes the opposite way of the last one on the same track. How's that possible without wrecking?Answer: Farther up the line there is a siding in which one or the other trains goes in order to pass the other train or there is a section of double track. Fifteen minutes is realistic. You need to do a search for Krug and find Krug's Tales. He is an engineer for BNSF and his site has a lot of info and great pictures. Why is there a coupling speed on a train, why does a train knock the car off of the tracks, what's so important about a coupling speed?Answer: Just as in real life, couplings at more that 4 mph will cause damage to the couplers on the cars, cause cars to jump the rails and sometimes damage the freight inside the cars. Many years ago, it was nothing to see cars being classified rolling into standing consists at 10 to 15 mph. Many couplers had to be replaced due to cracking when hit that hard. The 4mph is much safer for train crews also.Last but not least: I am 53 and I still ask questions when I wish to know something. The only dumb question is the one you did not ask!Carlyle Thompson

Thanks Carlyle! What's a "foamer"?The tracks going past the Johnstown Station are just on a big curve but there's three of them and the trains come every 15 minutes. Is there any place where they come in a shorter time period than that?Is it possible that a freight would stop beside the train station at the signal tower? Two of the tracks at the station go right beside the station (one on each side) and then there's another one about 10 feet away which makes the third track. Beside the third track there used to be a window you could look up through from the station tunnel to go up by the tracks. Why would they remove that window, flying freight maybe?Do people get their shoes stuck in the rails when they're walking them and then get hit by a train like in the movies?Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. Very possibly could get a shoe caught in the points. Some switches are remotely controlled by dispatchers hundreds of miles away.
Never but never crawl under or on a standing train! Always walk around the last car and walk around that car 20 to 30 feet to the rear in case an engine couples up to the cars and pushes them back. Most of this is in railroad rule books.

RE: Adam (I_Totally_Love_Trains) Stay with it here

CarlyleFirst may I say thanks for answering young Adam,It has just occurred to me reading Adam’s questions and your answers. Being involved with railways as a job and after many years we take a lot for granted as to what we have learnt directly or indirectly. Your answer :- Never but never crawl under or on a standing train! Always walk around the last car and walk around that car 20 to 30 feet to the rear in case an engine couples up to the cars and pushes them back. Most of this is in railroad rule books. bought back heaps of memories when I was a Supervising Shunter (switcher I think you call it) and we had a high school one side of the center of the Marshalling yard and homes the other side. There was roadways at each end of the big shunt yard. This sort of thing climbing under wagons to take a short cut to school happened a lot of times, even dragging their bicycles with them under the wagons. This was a Shunter’s (switchers) worse nightmare I tell you and being in charge of the yard you were responsible. Thinking back now “I shudder at the thought”, but it was all in a day’s work back then. Some may look at Adam’s questions as nothing, but the questions no matter how silly they may sound are definitely not at all. Railways were you might say my (and probably yours hopefully) whole life, as in working I mean. I enjoyed the railway work immensely overall. Not to say there were times I wondered what the hell I’m doing this for, but that comes with all jobs. I call it interaction with others syndrome . Not railways itself, the human element, as it takes all kinds, including myself.Being in the job you do your best to your ability and face the daily challenges that was thrown at you (well it was 15 years ago) cannot speak for today. But reading your answers basically railways do not change much, is similar in a way all over the world. I’m finding it a little hard to look at railways as most here would see it. Looking at railways from the outside, looking in. You see, and I saw, railways from the inside, looking out, understand what I mean here.
My father was a Railway Station Master (boss of a station) and as kids we live on the actual Railway station premises, later I got into the railways myself until I retired. So one might say, I have lived, eaten, and breathed railways. Probably this is a little unusual for most railwaymen.I noted that word “Foamers” it sounds terrible, like someone who has rabies, but I think I get the gist of what is meant here. During my years with engines and shunting (switching) we were always approached by people curious and interested about trains. I always loved it when approached by Dad with his young lad(s), I always knew who was the real interested big kid (at heart) Made me feel good. But maybe America is different in as much as more people, but over my years I cannot say I struck one that was what I could call an “Idiot” I assume here called “Foamers”... Most were really interested in rail and those that were GAME enough to approach us, like maybe we might bite. A conversation was made and if things were quiet were shown around and/or the situation arose, they got cab rides, of course some only from one end of the yard to the other, they were always rapt and appreciative. Not saying here this would happen these days, been out of the job awhile now. Times have changed.Of course these days a railwayman would have to be very careful as suing is now the world’s new pastime. This was completely unheard of up to about 25 years ago here in Oz. But we seem to have followed the rest of the sheep to the slaughter, so to speak. Humane nature I guess, anything for an easy buck, but this will have severe consequences over time.Even when out on the track at places you would get those waving to you. Yes some crew members would not wave to their mothers, but myself and others liked it. In many cases we would be actually expecting some at certain places to be there to wave to you and when some days they were not there, you would wonder, “Hope nothing happened to them” but perhaps I or we were the “Foamers” in the engine. Now that I’m now looking in at railways as an outsider would view railways, railways now takes on a complete new viewpoint. Adam’s questions may seem somewhat silly to some here, but they do take on a viewpoint from a person who knows nothing about Railways, but now would dearly like to know everything, all at once. When I was a Supervising Shunter and when the department would land me with young lads who needed to be trained in shunting, be nice to get one or two like Adam, at least darn interested in railways, not in the railways for, "well it's just as “A JOB” with no heart in it.One thing I like about Al Klug, one can see he loves his job. By the way, his last 2 essays: August 20, and September 12 were excellent, can relate to that and the one he wrote on RULES, RULES, I can also understand his frustration about rules with meanings that suit the hierarchy when it suits them. See U.S. no different in that area than other side of the world.
If others here get to read this last bit, here is Al's essays address of what I mentioned here. Interesting reading even for a railwayman.

As far as I understand English and to my own railroad experiences, it means straight on.
Why not step on rails? Simple, they can be slippery. You can slip when stepping on them. I must confess that in the time I was on duty on railroad yards, I have quite often stepped on the rails. >My Grandma's friend said she used to crawl under trains when

What a great post, John! You reminded me of something I hadn't thought about in years. As a kid running a tractor and plow on a wheat farm in northwestern Oklahoma, I'd watch Air Force cadets from Vance AFB at Enid training for hours overhead. In those days they flew the elegant T-33B, a classic and beautiful little trainer. Years later, as a Navy flight instructor out of NAS Meridian, Mississippi, I'd find myself obsessed watching some guy on the ground plowing a field! Nowadays, I'll sometimes drive out of my way to watch BNSF go by at a crossing here in OKC ... and I could swear those guys in the cab are looking around for someone to wave to.

Glad you enjoyed it Bud and saw my viewpoint.Good to see you were inspired by watching aircraft and went and did it yourself. Yes it is nice as a youngster to appreciate and be inspired by something, then be fortunate enough to be able to go out and bring it to reality. It is strange when we look over the fence, it looks all different. Get over the fence, and look back and you would nearly think you did not come from over there. Just different viewpoints can make a big difference.

>> and I could swear those guys in the cab are looking around for someone to wave to.
You would be surprised. Quite often you look at each other and sort of wait to see who waves first, so quite often no one waves. I find once you catch the fellows eye, (in other words looking at you) give a genuine wave and most times it worked for me when I was IN engines, and now looking AT engines. The human touch.Raymond, give it a try next time and see what happens, you got nothing to loose.
