Knowing this is a touchy subject, I'm going to go ahead and put this out there.I think Nels should give some thought to the concept of recognizing outstanding contributions to the train-simming hobby. Since this is the premier train-sim site on the web, how about allowing the registered members to nominate persons or entities for annual Train Simmy's (like Emmys, Grammys, etc.), with each member limited to one vote in each category to prevent stuffing the virtual ballot box. The three or four top nominees would then go on a ballot for voting by registered T-S members. Some possible categories--
Outstanding Achievement in Route Design
(separate categories for Payware, Prototype freeware, and fictional freeware)Outstanding achievement in loco modeling
(again, separate categories, say Payware, freeware steam, freeware diesel or electric)Outstanding achievement in rolling stock modelingOutstanding achievement in scenery/object modelingOutstanding achievement in activity designOutstanding achievement in simulator file modificationmaybe even a Lifetime Achievement Award (I would nominate Nels for the first one)With a yearly Train Simmy nomination process and vote (totals confidential with Nels?), we could recognize the best of the best, and no one needs to feel bad about a rating, since the nominees would all be winners (or at least that's what the non-winning nominees can/should publicly say (unlike some jealous black female movie actresses recently ;-]). On the other hand, we all know what has happens with other awards, and petty jealousies, etc., such as the Oscars. Still, I think this concept, as different as it is from the much maligned rating system, has some merit. So I thought I would put it out there for comments. Bring it on, good and bad.Kent

Train simmy awards? – image 1

We don't need awards or rewards. My reward is knowing I have created something that works, I can use it, and it looks half way decent. If someone else is able to use it and/or likes it, that is a bonus. This is not a competition center. We are all here to share ideas, information, and possibly some of our work. Just as many if not more are here to learn and observe. If you have awards for this and for that, people are going to start competing. The minute that happens, we might as well shut this place down. There will be fighting and bickering like you have never seen before. We have too much of that, now.As a wise Tree Frog told me once, build for yourself. Enjoy the work of others. If you build something and share it with the group, and not a single person downloads it, be happy with your accomplishment and move on. If one person downloads it, be happy that that person likes it. If a thousand people download your work, don't let it go to your head. Your next upload may be totally rejected. No awards, no rewards, no rating system, just sharing, fellowship, and the enjoyment of railroading. Now, what was the download count on that last project I uploaded ...

...but I would definitely erase "half way"... Everything's decent, and well more than that! At least done with genuine passion! Umberto

RE: Train simmy awards?

I knew you were going to catch it for this one, Kent! And I notice you're a charter member of this forum, too. I go right under the porch when the big dogs here go to huntin' - I've got neither train knowledge nor computer skills, just here to learn. So I've got no stake in it one way or another. But I see no problem with a member expressing his opinion about his own top three, top ten, or whatever. In fact, I'm thinking about a post just for FNG's - top ten sites/tricks/downloads or whatever; it would have helped me. I'd been running train simulator for six months before I found out what sky!conductor was. That stinks. We need something - I don't mean ratings, scoring, judging - but something that gives people a quicker start. It would be less annoying for old-timers, too, to have a quick start menu, so the FNG's wouldn't come on the forum one-by-one asking the same questions every time.

I know exactly what you mean. A good example of what you are looking for can be found at http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials. Yuri Sos, the webmaster there has been collecting information on different subjects and has come up with an excellent collection of tutorials. He is constantly adding to it as items are submitted to him or from technical discussions here on this site. We could use more depositories for information such as Yuri's site.Train simmy awards? – image 6

Really valuable link! I've added to my Favorites, but perhaps it should be put in the "Links - Other sites" area... Umberto

RE: Train simmy awards?

I agree with Cal. No one here is trying to compete with someone else. As I stated in the previous thread that tried to start this same idea, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like some routes more than others. I have seen posts that just rave about routes that I tried and blew away. But I will never say which ones I blew away. That is my business and mine alone. I am continually amazed at the amount of talent there is on this forum and the willingness of members to share their accomplishments with those of use that are not as computer savy!! Thanks to all who have contributed to making TS a very enjoyable experienc. Let's not ruin a good thing with rewards or awards. We are here to enjoy railroading. Let's do that!!Carlyle Thompson
