Jul-14-01, 12:48 PM (EST) "Hauling Capacity" Question for all you locomotive engineers.
How do you estimate the amount of tonnage a locomotive will haul?Say, a GP38 - 2000 hp.
1- On flat level track.
2- On a 1 percent grade.
3- On a 2 percent grade.I noticed that at Columbia Falls, on the spur to Kalispell between mileage 1212.10 and 1212.47 there is a fairly steep grade.
Two default GP's will start a standing train, (on the hill) of approx. 2620 tons.
With the new engine file installed, by Scott Borchardt, I can't even get close to getting over the hill. The 10mph speed limit doesn't help.

Jul-14-01, 05:21 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Hauling Capacity" There is a table sometimes found in the employee timetable which lists the tonnage ratings for locomotives over a given district. The ratings would vary on each subdivision depending on that route's most severe grade. For a rough figure a GP38-2 would only be good for 1050 tons on a 2 percent grade.I think the problem you are seeing is the fact that Wurger's performance is closer to reality but it exposes the problem that the grades on Marias Pass in MSTS are over exaggerated.Rail Driver

Jul-14-01, 07:10 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Hauling Capacity" Irvin:You can go here for the real BNSF timetables and System Special Instructions:http://www.bnsf-ttc.com/bnsftime/index.htmlBut I don't think you are going to find tonnage rating info. I did say sometimes they are found in timetables, but I also should have said it depends on the railroad.Rail Driver

Jul-19-01, 01:49 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Hauling Capacity" Don't forget, in the real world, grade rating also take into account the curvature of the track (called compensated grade). In other words, it takes more power to pull a given load up a curved 2% grade, than up a straight 2% grade.Chuck Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
