Something which has been bugging the hell out of me.I don't think MSTS tells you which state MP is located in, SOO I ask, which state is MP located in???I've also read alot of posts saying that the grades on MP1 are really steep, and that MP3 makes them "un-steep", are the grades more then 1 in 18??? As the Camden line (Camden located near Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) had grades of 1 in 18 on Kenny Hill. This was the steepest adhesion worked grade in Australia to my understanding. Most of the trains over 1 car (YES 1 car) had to be double headed. Thanks,Ben
<<I've also read alot of posts saying that the grades on MP1 are really steep, and that MP3 makes them "un-steep", are the grades more then 1 in 18???>> Well I do remember hearing that the grades were steeper in the original MP than in real life.------------------------------ Kyle Norek M.P. 76 on the NS Buffalo Line
In the US, grades are usually stated as 'percent' instead of a ratio as in the UK or Australia. In mainline US practice, 2% (1 in 50) is considered steep, while 4% (1 in 25) is a practical limit. As I understand it, the real-life Marias Pass has grades approximately 2.2%, which is roughly 1 in 40. The Microsoft version MP1 has grades of roughly 6%, or about 1 in 16. The MP3 version in the file library has been corrected to 2.2% (1 in 40.) Or so I have been told; I don't really know how to check the grade on a MSTS route. Maybe someone here on the forums can tell us. Dan
Here in Italy steepness limit for normal, natural adherence railways is 3.5 % (we use percentage too), that is 7/20. Steeper slopes are serviced by rack railways.Umberto
G'day Ben,Please excuse the pun, but MP1 track grades are crap. Sorry no other word fits it. But to the fellows who re-did MP1 to MP3.... Many THANKS fellas for MP3 if you get to read this.I'm a retired railwayman these days and reason I ONLY use the MP3 in MSTS, (do not use any other routes, nor interested in them) is for the grades in MP3 are virtually the same as the old narrow gauge Garratt days on the S.A.R Peterborough division in South Australia, (Cockburn to Port Pirie) that was ripped up in 1970 when the Indian - Pacific (Sydney to Perth) standard gauge went through. Yes, a sad day, but price for progress I guess. If and when some good 1:40, 1:60 Auzzie routes get made, then the good old MP3 will do me just fine. Nothing I like better than thundering up the Pass with Joseph Spinella's Grarratt, double headed with our nice Aussie Rollingstock. Can re-live the memories. A word of thanks also to all our Aussie rollingstock makers. Great stuff. Made an old(er) fella happy.I heard a fair while back that MP3 was having some more work done on it, but heard nothing since. Be nice if it was.
