Interesting question I was thinking of, If you could travel time, and go back to witness any railroad based event, what would it be? the driving of the golden spike? or perhaps the first articulated? maybe you'd like to ride the super chief? For me, I'd say go back to 1950ish and take a ride on the O&W through mountains, heh and I wouldn't have to walk far, the stations right in town

I'd go back to the early 70's and see the Milwaukee Road's Rocky Mountain Division in Montana. Seeing Little Joes and Boxcabs going through the Bitteroot Mountains in person would be awesome!!Austin S.

I agree, seeing the MILW electrics at work would be a real treat. i got to see the line working farther east, but the electrics were the defining moment for them. The U36C units were impressive as well, but mostly stayed on the West Coast. The F-M units on a graceful passenger set would be up there as well.
I did get to see some really spectacular RR events, I clearly remember the first GP7 run on the Wichita Valley, I was just a small child, but I still remember feeling a little uneasy, like a little bit of the world I had known had died. The steam came back for a while, but the GP7s were eventually indomitable.
I also got to see the hot T&P passenger E units at speed out west of Big Spring, Texas. These were quite a sight at speed in the wide open steppes.
Then there were the Santa Fe Doodlebugs, I used to ride them with my grandmother as a child. I didn't appreciate them for what they were at the time, quite a piece of the American scene.
And finally the great Pennsylvania GG!s. I got to ride the NEC behaind a pair of those when they were in their prime.
I got to see and hear lots of the U50 "whirlybirds" and even a little of the C-855.
I have watched the Milwaukee Road and Soo working in the snow of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South Dakota (even seen a flat nose Baldwin at work in the snow). I have also seen the Santa Fe out in its heyday in New Mexico, lots of SD24s and SD45s.
Now I see all the big UP monsters on the triple main, and the BNSF SD70Macs on the coal trains coming out of the sand hills.
I guess that is a pretty lucky bit of RR history to have seen. I didn't really go looking for these things, I just happened to live and work where they were taking place. Fortunate!
Bob

I'd like to go back to 1911 (give or take a year) in Colliers, West Virginia. My grandfather's house was right next to the railroad and it burnt to the ground due to a spark from a passing locomotive. I'd like to see just what locomotive was the culprit. Nobody was hurt, fortunately, but I'd like to see the event. My grandfather worked for the Berwind-White coal company and it was probably a coal train that was going by at the time.

RE: If you could witness any RR event from the past?

I would go back to the late 1940's/early1950's to watch SP cabforwards going over Tehchapi Pass. At the same time I could see the Daylight and the Owl- an overnight passenger train through Tehchapi with double-headed cabforwards! So who is going to build the time machine? Any RR event?

Mine would have to be one of three things : Wellington Bank, 1904, as "City of Truro" rumbles by, Stoke Bank, 1938, as "Mallard" takes the record, or to a certain shed in 1968 and stop a scrapman wrecking the last "Claud Hamilton".TTFN,
