Jul-09-01, 11:52 PM (EST) "FINALLY, train sims!" While I've always wanted to have a cool model railroad, I never wanted it enough to invest the time and money. For the past couple of years I've been wondering why there were no train simulator programs on the market--it seemed like the perfect prototype for a sim. Then my eye fell on MSTS at Wal-Mart (one copy left) and I snapped it up faster than you can say "Flying Scotsman." I was also spurred to invest in a new graphics card and some additional RAM.I LOVE this program!!! Right now I'm just focusing on learning to run the trains, adding new trains, routes, etc. is far in the future for me. But it's already far beyond what I imagined in a train simulation.I will definitely be picking up a copy of this "Trainz" program when it comes out, though. MTST's gritty realism is cool, but I'd still like a "model train simulator" as Trainz seems to be. I'd like to be able to easily model both realistic and "fantasy" (or even silly, almost impossible-looking) layouts and just set trains loose on them to run around. One thing I'm wondering is--I wonder what kind of impact these train simulations will have on "hands-on" model railroading? Atlas and the rest have to be looking over their shoulders, you would think. There's something about holding an actual scale-model train, of course, but it's also a helluva lot cheaper to get the entire train universe on a single CD-ROM.Gregg Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-10-01, 04:59 AM (EST) 1. "RE: FINALLY, train sims!" I am awaiting delivery of my US version in the UK - should be this week I had a model railway for a few years as a child, and then again in my early twenties. I had to give it up due to space, and I was hoping for a train sim - it is here!!!!!!! I won't miss cleaning the rails for the minutest piece of dust, but there is something about model rail that cannot be beaten ! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

When I was between ages 3 & 8, My step father and my Grandfather, both, set up plywood for a model train.
This was back in the early 50's, before HO (as I remember). I think it was "S" scale, then.
My step-dad set up 1 piece of plywood in the living room (that was all we had room for), My Grandaddy set up 4 pieces in his basement. We built trains, scenery, bridges, tunnels, etc. I loved it then, and if I had the money (and space), I'd love it now.
This train sim is almost as good as the old days, except, I get to drive the train. The scenery is better (or is it? Sometimes, it just seems, if you put your hands in it, it's better in the heart.)
I love this game. Even with all the glitches. I know I'm probably dreaming, but, I think Big Bill will come out with some patches.
Nuff said.
