That was a hell of a fast reply... I knew exactly you would be the first person to reply! lolI heard the Conrail Seaboard Expanded (or it could have been Chessie instead of Conrail) at the Baltimore & Ohio railroad museum in (where else?) Baltimore, Maryland.------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to be involved with trains, the Union Pacific! What does CSX stand for? – image 3

RE: What does CSX stand for?

From what I understand it: Chessis System & Seaboard System multiplied(x). I guess thats where the X comes from. The Chessie System was the B&O, C&O, Western Maryland. The Seaboard System was the L&N, ACL,
and the SCL. And now the Conrail, well aprt of it was absorbed in which inluded the PC & NYC if im not mistaken. I may be missing some, but thats what I do know.

Thanks for that info, but I thought Penn Central was the NYC and Pennsylvania RR merged... oh whatever. I saw on CNN that Penn Central was the fifth worst bankruptcy in the history of the U.S. economy. RE: What does CSX stand for?

Chessie Seaboard as u said - the x represents the merger of the 2 companies. without the x - the company would be CS - which also stands for Chessie System - which caused complecations in the reporting markings. therefore the X was added.

Consolidated Shipping ExpressIts the merger of the B&O, C&O, Seaboard Coastlines, the Family Lines and Conrail, serving from Florida to Pennsylvania, all the way out to Ohio and Illinois. That's a rough estimate

What does CSX stand for? – image 7

a quote from the CSX website:
"What does "CSX" stand for? CSX was formed in 1980 by the acquisition of the Chessie System Railway and the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad--thus the "C" and the "S". These two entities brought with them subsidiaries that were not transportation related, i.e., resort, video production, mineral company, etc.--thus the "X", which stands for "and all others"."

You all came close, Very close, but "IcyFire" hit the nail square on the head and "Got it Right!"
It's "C=Chessie S=Seaboard X=and all others"
My son is a CSX Freight Conductor, and had to learn that in training school two years ago.
Interesting question, and pretty darn good answers
Hope I was of some help..Daniel

RE: What does CSX stand for?

Chessie (C) Seaboard (S) Transportation (X - don't ask how that works!)X is apparently shorthand for transportation (witness TTX - Trailer Train Transportation; GATX, FURX, etc...)Conrail was divied up between CSX and NS. Conrail itself was pieces of Erie-Lackawanna, PC and a couple other NE bankrupt railroads.GH

RE: What does CSX stand for?

I e-mailed CSX Transportation about this one. CS means Chessie Seaboard and then the X is like a variable in Algebra. They have to use CSXT for some reason that I forget but they can't end their name with CSX for certain things so say they haul cars. It would mean Chessie Seaboard Automobile Transportation and the X would just be a variable for all the stuff that they haul.Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. The "X" does not stand for transportation. An "X" as the last letter in reporting marks like TTX - TTAX - GATX - FURX - ACFX stands for private company. Any freight car with a reporting mark with an X at the end is owned by a private company and not a railroad. The confusion here is the reporting mark for CSX is CSXT and I believe the full name of the railroad is CSX Transportation. Also this is why their reporting mark does not end with an X. They are a railroad and not a private car owner/company.PatchCrew

RE: What does CSX stand for?

C=Chessie S= Seaboard X= "and much more" or X as the agibraic sign. Anyhow the reason why CSX reporting marks dont end in X is due to the fact leasing/private owners by law must use X in remporting marks. Therefore the T was added (Transportation)

CSX (Chessie and Seaboard Expanded) was formed by the merger of Chessie Systems, Inc., and Seaboard Coast Line Industries (Family Lines) on November 1, 1980, under the holding company CSX. In 1985 Chessie System and Seaboard System were consolodated forming CSX Transportation (CSXT). Cheers!

RE: What does CSX stand for?

i went and read some TRAINS magazines b4 how does companies such as TTX and GATX fit into this? - apparently - the X stands for a non railroad - IE - TTX - there not a railroad - they are owned by all the class 1's - but TTX supply cars to the companies who own TTX. Thats why - (im guessing from here) CSX has reporting marks of CSXT (IE a boxcar) or CSXI (IE - a double stack car)

RE: What does CSX stand for?

HI;
Sorry for my previous Error! I was Wrong! I made a slight mistake on the correct name of CSX.
My CSX Conductor son told me this morning, that CSX stands for:"C=Chessie S=System (NOT Seaboard) X=and all others."
T=Transportation. He stated that X is sometimes referred to by some employees to mean Extra and also Expanded as some have posted. It is very easy to see why this would cause confusion.Daniel

>"C=Chessie S=System (NOT Seaboard) X=and all others."Seems to be some conflict, as my info comes from a book published by the C&OHS, which goes into great detail about the transitions and consolidations leading up to, and including, the final mergers of CSX.Cheers!

Hack your wrong!I e-mailed CSX about this a good while ago because I was to interested about what CSX stood for. It means Chessie Seaboard and then X is like a variable for all others. Say CSX hauled minerals, it would be Chessie Seaboard Mineral and since CSX usually goes by CSXT in business it would be Chessie Seaboard Mineral Transportation. The X has nothing to do with other companies. If you don't believe me on this then you all go to www.csx.com and e-mail them about this and you see what they say.Adam-------------------------------On 9-11-01 President George W. Adam:Where did I ever say you said the "X" stood for Transportation? If you're talking about my post #9 from 7/7/02 it was a reply to post #7.You also insist the "X" is a "variable for all others". What does the info say at the CSX website? It says "thus the "X", which stands for "and all others"." Why is that info so different from what you are saying? And you're also telling me not to believe the info posted at the CSX website?Adam in all of your posts you say the following:

RE: What does CSX stand for?

CSX or Chessie system, Seaboard system and X (others) was formed in 1980 with the merger of the Chessie System ( itself a merger of the old B&O and C&0, Western Maryland and others) and the Seaboard System ( a company formed with the Seaboard Air Line and Florida Coast Line among others). This merger also included the Clinchfield and others. Hence the name: CSX

RE: What does CSX stand for?

P.S. Conrail plays no part in the naming of CSX. Conrail came into the picture when in the mid 1990's CSX and Conrail wanted to merge. The Norfolk Southern Railway successfully challenged the merger and Conrail was divided up between the two railroads.
