When the train derails, you can reset Train-sim without the sickening thud of a $700 dollar brass locomotive hitting the concrete floor.
9. Marias Pass will fit in your computer, it definitely won't fit in your basement.
8. If your run is 34 miles, it takes an hour in a straight line, not 68 laps around the layout.
7. Train simmers give away their cars and locomotives for free - and keep them for themselves. **Thanks guys!!!**
6. Your computer can be used for a hundred other things when you're not running trains. And it collects dust just as well as a model railroad.
5. An install of Train-Sim takes 5 minutes, an install of a model railroad takes 5 years.
4. You can shop for new cars and locos without leaving your computer, and if you don't like what you get, it was free to begin with.
3. You can move Train-sim to the new house in one easy trip...
2. The track is always clean enough to run trains.
And the number one reason Train-sim is better than a modelrailroad:It costs $50, about $9950 less than a model railroad.- An ex-Model Railroader. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

But I do not think I'm ready to give up my model railroad, at this point it is still easier to lay track, create switch lists and custom paint cars and engines on my model railroad than it is to do it in Microsoft Train Simulator. The day I can create the entire Montour railroad in MSTS, complete with SW9's, 70 ton hoppers and ex UP CA5 cabooses will be the day I retire my model railroad. "RE: Top ten reasons Microsoft Train Simulator is better than Model Railroading:" Give it a year or so Did you know that MS Flight Sim is one the best selling game of all time, it is going into it's 8th version, I believe? MS did not get to be as big as it is by ignoring the market. Have you noticed the stats on TS so far? Some sites are exceeding download limits on new add-ons, and here in Denver, I had to check three stores before I found a copy. They had one left. It's obvious MS knew there would be a market for add-ons, or they wouldn't have added the editors they did, they are probably the ones the design team used, written for programmers by programmers, and thrown on the disk. I'd be willing to bet the next version will have a "pro" version with all the editors included, or someone will come out with a 'third party' set, like Flight sim's airplane creators. "RE: Top ten reasons Microsoft Train Simulator is better than Model Railroading:" Microsoft initially entered the sim market by buying the flight simulator title from BAO (Bruce Artwick Organization). It grew from there, not so much on the strength of MS, but on the strength of the 3rd party addons that made the platform virtually limitless. The same could happen to MSTS...but the first version here needs to be a lot more open than it is now. Routes are WAY too hard to create. I have yet to find one online and thats surprising. The key is to create the platform that people pay for, then let the freeware people take it further. MS appreciates the value of this now with MSFS. They didnt initially...but after 20 years, and 8 revisions of the same title, they do now. That bodes well for train fans.Eric

I mean if you already had a nice size model railroad before MSTS was released why not keep it and use it? But I certainly am not going to build me a model railroad now that I have MSTS. I am getting the same if not more enjoyment out of MSTS that I do with model railroads. With MSTS I can easily create my own skins, it takes me maybe 10 minutes and they have been coming out very well. I have 3 routes I am working on right now and I am having a TON and I mean a TON of fun building them. I am already running some freight activities on one of the routes that is basically finished. Best of all its not costing me several hundred or even a few thousand dollars to build these routes. Not to mention it took me maybe 4 hours to build one of them to completion and with 3 yards I think its fairly nice. Folks my next step with this sim will be making my own buildings, loading docks, and other objects. I think in time we are going to see so many add-ons, Abacus is already talking about it. "RE: Top ten reasons Microsoft Train Simulator is better than Model Railroading:" I suppose that's true, but I haven't seen many #10 or #14 turnouts on model railroads leading into mile long sidings, or yards that could hold 1000 cars....Or even model railroads that go 67 miles without 180 degree turns...Please note, though, I love everyone's attitude about this post and op-ed piece, it was meant to be funny, and invoke thought, and everyone has been great about it. It's nice not to see the usual flaming on these forums.... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I have noticed that the train forums are less prone to flaming than their FS counterparts! LOL I am bored of the FS forums, and I may live in here instead! Here's another reason why MSTS is better than model rail:You can have a fully operational railway without anyone knowing, especially women, who are not attracted by the sight of a model railway! LOL.
