May-06-01, 06:17 PM (EST) "Posting pics from off site??" Not many sites allow posting externally from their server. Will there be an upload area available on this site to store pics so they can be posted internally in the forums? Thanks. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I had to go do a little research before I could answer this...It looks like the forum software can link to pictures quite easily, you just insert the complete URL in the message. That works right now for pictures you already have hosted on another Web server. What we need to set up is a site here where you can upload your pictures and then link to them, for people who don't have their own place to host pictures. I just talked to our system administrator about this and he's going to get working on setting it up. I'll make an announcement about it when it's ready.

Nels,I use DC Forum on my site, and it has a file upload facility built in; you can limit the size of uploaded files too so people don't use up megabytes of space for a single picture. My users find this dead handy if they don't have their own webspace. As you said, inserting the full URL of a JPG or GIF will load it from that site.Posting pics from off site? – image 1*fingers crossed*It also has the advantage of not using your bandwidth. May-14-01, 09:41 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Posting pics from off site??" Right, but that doesn't actually upload the picture to DCForum, it just links to it on another server. Which is fine for people who have a server available to them, but for those who don't they need a place to host the picture file.Unless I'm missing something here...I'll freely admit I am not an expert on running DCForum yet!

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough (there's a first! )The example I used above was the linking using the URL of a picture off-site.Uploading is separate; there's an option in the forum admin section to enable it, as well as limiting the maximum file size. When someone composes a new message or reply there's a "Click here to upload a file" link. This pops up a window which prompts you to choose a file from your hard disk, and what type of file (i.e. GIF/JPEG).Submitting this will upload the file to the forum server. The user is then given an address of this (randomly named) file which they simply paste into their message.Seems complicated... There must be an easier way! May-15-01, 12:45 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Posting pics from off site??" Well, I'm sure glad you mentioned this...I'm still learning how this forum software works and I hadn't found the upload setting before. I think I've now got it enabled, and assuming there's a nice MSTS screen shot shown below my test of it worked.Posting pics from off site? – image 2 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
