RE: Freight Question

Your description is not too clear but it sounds like you are talking about coil cars. They carry coils of sheet steel from steel mills to fabricating plants. They could also be carrying coils of wire or cable.

ANother Freight Question

Here's another one for you...Does anyone know what is usually carried by a "COLTAINER"? I see loads of them plus gray boxes (look like intermodal stuff) passing by on th CSX line here outside of PHilly.Judging by the accident a week or so ago, I though the COLTAINERS might be hauling refuse.Anybody know?GH

RE: ANother Freight Question

If you mean containers, they can contain anything, just like trucks.
If you really mean coltainers, I have never heard of them.Freight Question – image 2

RE: ANother Freight Question

No. They say "Coltainer" on the side. They are gray and shorter than the normal 40+ feet semi containers you commonly see.I'll see if I can snag a pic and post it one of these days.I think it may be loads of trash as was mentioned in a previous post.GH

RE: ANother Freight Question

I have seen these too! They are gray and they do indeed say 'COLTAINER'. They are like miniature-sized containers. I saw a train about 25 flat cars long hauling these containers (just outside of Newark, Maryland (suburb of Philly) on my vacation thru the Northeast.

RE: ANother Freight Question

I'm not quite sure, but if that's what I think it is, it's a kind of modular coal car. Bn uses something like that (or did) and they are supposedly a more fuel efficient way to carry coal.

RE: Freight Question

It could be traction motors. Some roads send their traction motors to a central repair facility. The motors are put on flat cars and a hood is placed over the motors to protect them from the elements.

Why don't railroads just haul lumber that's already been processed in a lumber mill on regular flatcars or instead of center beam flatcars like I just saw the other day? Do center beam flatcars hold the lumber better?Adam

RE: Freight Question

There are probably several reasons. The ones that come to mind are 1) easier to load and unload, 2) higher capacity, 3) more stable (better center of gravity), 4) better able to handled packaged (wrapped) lumber products, 5) much easier to secure the load. There are probably many other reasons.Freight Question – image 3
