Apr-22-01, 05:57 PM (EST) "Mixing Flying And Trains" Just thought I'd share how I mix my hobby interests...I spent part of this morning looking down at the Northeast Corridor...the electrified rail that the Acela travels. Why? I was doing touch and goes at my home airport which just happens to have Route 128 station under the traffic pattern. No, I did not see an Acela go by...nothing but an MBTA commuter.I also took a pass over my home town rail yards (we have 3 of them) and saw a little switching action and a light engine move. I wonder if anyone else does their railfanning from above?

Apr-23-01, 11:28 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Mixing Flying And Trains" Man, about as far above the tracks as I get is freeway overpasses. Sounds like loads of fun to me. Where do you fly? (You mention Route 128, but that doesn't ring a bell...)Of course, now that I think of it, I always pay close attention to rail traffic when flying into Atlanta Hartsfield. Landing to the west, you fly in over an auto plant, with plenty of autoracks either loaded or loading. Landing to the east, you come in over Marta tracks and a moderately travelled CSX line. So yeah, I've done a tiny bit of railfanning from above... Dave

Apr-23-01, 05:48 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Mixing Flying And Trains" Route 128 is the inner ring highway around Boston. Route 128 station is SW of the city and is on the Northeast Corridor rail line where the Acela runs. Originally it was a New Haven RR station, and a bit historic as it was the first station built specifically to serve auto traffic...it's not in the middle of a downtown like old stations but located solely for convenience to the highway.I'm glad I'm not the only one looking down at rail traffic Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-24-01, 10:01 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Mixing Flying And Trains" Actually, I fly also but I haven't really considered doing any railfan stuff from above... For some reason I'd rather be on the ground for that. I've sat beside tracks for hours waiting for trains to come by, though. Of course, some nights I also go to the runway threshold and wait for planes to fly right overhead, too.

Apr-24-01, 08:23 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Mixing Flying And Trains" I've only done it once in recent history, and like in the previous posting, it was on an airline flight, departing Toronto Pearson (CYYZ) for Halifax (CYHZ) we flew right up the coast of Lake Ontario allowing me to gaze down CN's Oakville subdivsion, then we flew over Toronto Union station, which was quite busy with commutter traffic at the time.my two centsDave Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-25-01, 12:48 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Mixing Flying And Trains" I certainly would not want to give up trackside train watching. There's nothing like being close when all that power goes rolling by But there are some uses for aerial observation. Some railroad features (like major yards) are so big you cannot take them all in from the ground but an airbourne view gives you a better perspective. You also may spot some surprises--last year I saw something blue parked behind the local Home Depot (appropriate name that!) and a closer look revealed a Conrail caboose parked in the weeds. I'd gone to that store numerous times but never seen it from the ground, but once I knew where to look there it was!
