Thursday June 6, 2002. 7:30 AM. Kearny Junction, NJ. NJ Transit Morris & Essex Line Midtown Direct. An 8 car train derailed here causing all M&E traffic to be diverted to Hoboken. Only the locomotive (ALP44 4428) and the lead car derailed, but they both stayed upright. There were no reported injuries. The train had been running on the wrong track and was mistakely told to back up. The train backed up over an open switch, causing the derailment. No Amtrak service was interfered. Every M&E line train, including Midtown Direct service, had to use Hoboken, causing major delays. The commuters on those trains had to take the ferry or PATH into the city.
