Jun-24-01, 10:17 PM (EST) "An Interesting Combination: Planes & Trains" Today, I was at the Van Nuys Airshow (largest civilian airshow in California), in Los Angeles, watching a fly-over, when I saw a UP consist moving along the tracks at one end of the airport. I only saw it out the corner of my eye, but I was able to identify the locomotives as two Union Pacific Geeps. Later in the day, a 4-coach METROLINK train, with an F59-PH at the point. I had not noticed those rails at the east end of the airport ever before. I left that day very fulfilled. I had been able to enjoy two of my hobbies simultaneously; trainspotting and planespotting!David Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-26-01, 05:07 PM (EST) 1. "RE: An Interesting Combination: Planes & Trains" Great fun combining activities like that I had a similar combination earlier today. I was out doing touch and goes at my local airport and spotted the Acela pulling into Route 128 station below me. First time I've seen a real Acela (seen it plenty in MSTS of course!)Last summer at an air show at Westover AFB in central Massachusetts in addition to all the planes there was an Operation Lifesaver booth and the U.S. Army railroad unit had two of its locomotives on display. One was operating on the base's track and the other was open for tours. That was kind of the highlight of the air show for me

Jul-06-01, 03:10 PM (EST) 2. "RE: An Interesting Combination: Planes & Trains" I've done similar things, too. Used to fly Cessnas quite a bit out of Valdosta, Georgia. Several times, I rented a 150 and paced the N&W 611 and the 1218. It's a lot of fun to watch from above.Landed at the private field in Fargo, Georgia once to see a 611 runby. The field (marked "R") was a GOLF COURSE! And VERY short, with 70 foot pine trees at each end. That little 150 sure did well, though.Sure miss the 611 and the 1218. I understand teh economics of parking them, but it doesn't make it any easier.Earl Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-07-01, 11:11 AM (EST) 3. "RE: An Interesting Combination: Planes & Trains" I've never tried actually trying to follow a moving train from the air. Most of them go much too slow. I think you're talking about steam trains though...that would be fun to try, and easier to spot too I suspect Judging from your screen name we share a third hobby...ever combine radio with the other two? Scanning train frequencies is a lot of fun as is bringing a 2M handheld up in the plane. The 2M rig in my car is programmed for all the local railroad frequencies and probably spends more time scanning those that being used for the purpose the manufacturer intended.73 de K1UR Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Trolleys
Former Southern Pacific ferry
Aircraft Carriers and other Naval ships
The "Star of India" sailing ship
Lindbergh Field (airport)
