Apr-02-02, 10:17 PM (EST) "Bad News for AmTrak" I was hering on the news that AmTrak will be cutting service thrugh Colorado and they may be cutting the California Zephor from service as well as the Southwestern Chief... or was it the Southeastern Chief. anyway I think that the Route thru Colorado is among the most scenic part of the route that is to be seen but I was almost hit by the one In Brush Colorado myself lol.
such a shame that it will be ending and spells the doom of Passenger service across the country as we know it.
Victom of Airlines just as Trans Atlantic Passenger ships now the trains will fade away in fond Memory for the long haul.Don Pottorff Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-02-02, 10:34 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Bad News for AmTrak" Yep. Add "Texas Eagle" to that list.
I personally know the stationmaster at Temple, Texas ( A very nice caring man) and he is somewhat PO'ed at the NRPC's antics. They cut him from two men to one, no checked baggage, and weekdays only. BOOM! There went half to 3/4 of his job...getting baggage to the train, opening up on weekends, having a day or two off, etc. They also (get this) wanted to have the stationmaster at the scheduled end of shift REGARDLESS of whether or not the last train had arrived or not to THROW EVERYONE OUT OF THE STATION! (in my book, that's no way to run a passenger rr) they couldn't stay overtime or afterwards on their own either. He asked them for that in writing over the guy's signature so he could post it in his station, but all the way up the ladder in Chigago and in Amtrak HQ, NO ONE would sign it, so they can still stay til after the last train.
I am glad Warrington is gone. I pity the folks that get him after Amtrak. I for one hope AMtrak keeps all the trains and staff and that the government comes to their senses and gives them the money they need. I don't understand why the bureaucrats in D.C. can't give amtrak the money, but they can give it to the da*ned airlines by the bankload.Sorry for my rant.

Apr-03-02, 08:34 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Bad News for AmTrak" We are all guilty of fostering the demise of Amtrak Long Haul
pasenger train service here in the states. Guilty because we elected the politicians who, in their infinite wisdom, did such a lousy job in researching, writing and passing federal legislation that created Amtrak! One does not have to be a financial genius to understand that Amtrak was underfunded from its very first day. Nor does one have to be a intelectual giant to see that federal oversight of Amtrak was slipshod at best!Point the finger of blame in any direction you wish and you will hit a culprit, but when you look in the miror in the morning you are looking at one of the culprits as well! Now before you Flame me in this forum, understand that I am one of your fellow culprits and it is not a pleasant experience! Apr-05-02, 12:42 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Bad News for AmTrak" Amtrak has been underfunder from it very inception...the problem is nothing new! It amazes me that we are the only country that has approached the problem believing that a national passenger train system can be financially self supporting. Without exception, the best that I know, all the wonderful passenger systems in Europe are subsidized by there governments even to the extent to building brand new track structures for their High Speed trains. I doubt that we will ever see the equivelent here in the State because of the Yahoo's we put in our Congress! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-05-02, 01:01 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Bad News for AmTrak" LAST EDITED ON Apr-05-02 AT 01:04 PM (EST)Before they can drop a line (Cal Zephyr) Amtrak has to give 180 days notice, for the "we're dropping long distance trains" date of Oct 1st (or whenever) the 180 days was a few days ago...and no notice had yet been given ...(or so says one of the news boards that I read..I think it was the Altamont press one)In Denver theres a big fish tank called Ocen Journey...been around for 3 years....when they wanted to start it a while back the buisness projection people said "lots of people will keep coming day in day out" .....they didn't.....so the place is in trouble w/ creditors, much $$$ in debt....so they said "On APRIL 2nd we will close FOREVER".....drummed up buisness, got donations, press, 4-2-02 rolls around..."oh yeah we will still be open, but we're declaring bankruptcy" .. good way to get attention.......parallels???can you blame Warrington for jumping off Amtrak after 4 yrs of
"we need money" - "no", "we need money" - "no", "we need money" - "no", "we need money" - "no", "we need money" - "no", ok we'll mortage Penn Station "no"Matt

Apr-05-02, 12:48 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Bad News for AmTrak" Let me guess? Posted discontuance notices for Oct. 1st?
They did that for all long distance trains.
The hope, i believe, is to not wait for Amtrak Reform Act to make their long, drawn out, and probably stupid decision. I believe that the goal of this is to FORCE Congress to act soon! In a panic state, they are more likely to meet Amtrak's demands once constituents start writing in. So.... To prevent the bloodbath, write your Congresmen and tell them not to let Amtrak do this!
Just my take on the whole thing...------ BUZZ ------

Apr-05-02, 06:02 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Bad News for AmTrak" Just read an article in USA Today that Amtrak may not be making the severe cuts in Long Distance routes. Seems that there is more support to give them the 1.2 billion they are requesting. They should be given more if you ask me. Hell we gave 5 billion to "support" the airlines after Sept. 11. They OCT 1 date comes from the fact that by law they have to give 180 day notice whenever they plan to close a route.Hopefully things will work out..ATSFDUDE Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
