So you read everyone's problems and you got a problem too. And now you've concluded that you've
"bought a $40 piece of *#$&^@!!! "I'd bet there are many, many more people who did NOT have problems and are too busy having fun to post messages about how good this sim really is. You don't see too many of the positives do you? Nope, only the negatives will generally surface. And it's a fact that somebody out there will have trouble with all the various configurations of computer, software, operating systems, ad nauseum out there. Dwell on this awhile okay? You're basing your snivelling on the few folks who've written in, and the fact that somehow you didn't get yours to work. I'd bet money the problem wasn't the Train Simulator though. Dwell on that too. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-23-01, 03:25 PM (EST) 3. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" I've had no problems at all! I have been using add-ons and I really love the MSTS program. Really sorry to hear that some are having problems. I've already seen some great add-ons like the new Dash-9 Long-Long-Short-Long crossing horn sound. I think that is the fun of this sim, being able to tweek it to get it even better. Jun-23-01, 11:37 PM (EST) 7. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" You have failed to outline what your problems are?
They may be fixed easily. If you want to get the best out of this you will have to have patience.
Have you tried Trainmaster 4, I bought that as well and it is extremely good at what it does, the MSTS is a different product and a very exciting one. Give the community time to fix the problemsI have a couple of problems myself but it would appear they are related to my hardware.I have watched here and picked up a few fixes to things that I don't consider correct (train physics, Trainmaster has that perfect).Derek >After reading everyone's problems and encountering

Jun-24-01, 06:16 AM (EST) 8. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" I don't know what you are complaining about. This is a first time product. I can also tell by your comments, you have never been on the ground floor for any products like this. I have been involved with Train Dispatcher, from almost day one. There are alot of growing pains, you just have to deal with them.I have had so many problems with MSTS and the editor I stopped counting, but am I blaming them....NO. Just hold on to your seat and wait some. There will be patches for the game, to help get the bugs out of it. Just set back and play it.! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jun-26-01, 02:28 AM (EST) 13. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" >I've been at the "ground level" of most of MS's products.
>They never finish what they start. Hmm .. well, first off, Train Simulator runs -perfectly-
on my system. 1280x960x16 - most details at about 3/4 of
maximum, 19-60 FPS depending on the location. Smooth as
silk, and -never- a crash in probably 50-75 hours of use.As to Microsoft, I have to say that Win98 SE
runs -perfectly- on my system. Oh, and Microsoft FS98,
FS2000 and Motocross Madness 2 run -perfectly- for me.Could the problem lie with -your- system, or other things
you run in the background.. virus checkers, Norton, ICQ etc?Just a thought.Do you have DX 8.0a? Have you upgraded your video drivers?
What exactly is your problem with TS?As to being at 'the ground level' with M$, etc., I am a retired
Systems Engineer / Developer with 30 years at IBM Corporation.
I've been on 'the ground floor' a few times myself. TS is
a fine, stable product, as it relates to crashing, etc..Mine:
PIII-1000 / 384MB / GeForce2 Ultra 32MB / SB Live Value
DirectX 8.0A / NVidia 12.41 WHQL certified video drivers.

Jun-26-01, 07:45 AM (EST) 14. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" I had a problem installing MSTS from my cd rom that came with my computer and after 2 times of it telling me it can't read the cd (bad cab file),I installed it through my cd recorder with no problems. Its been installed over 2 weeks and only 1 lock-up.
I have a 1 ghz.Dell, with 128 meg of ram and a Geforce 2 video card and MSTS runs good.
Remember MSTS needs about 1.8 gigs of hard disk to install

I added 9 engines to mine which added 125 megs and my folder where its installed is a little over 1.8 gigs.
Did you do a full install?

Jun-26-01, 12:29 PM (EST) 17. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" Well, I don't know if it's a piece of $^#$#@%^ exactly, but certailnly feels like an unfinished product. I mean it's supposed to be a game, and games are supposed to be fun right? I exausted all activities in Marias Pass (freight being the only reason I bought this game) and now I have to go back to school and get a Master's Degree in Editor Hacking if I want to do more. How hard would it have been to include comprehensive docs for the game and the editor? The game could have simply included some kind of random generator, so you could get a new train order each time, with traffic and special circumstances. Now I wait for new activities to be produced by fans (I don't know how you have the time to build them - God Bless you who do!), and often I find they still don't work right. I'm still waiting for the signal to change outside of Browning West on the Empire Builder activity. *sigh* but I'll say this for it - It's got lots of trains in, and that can't be all bad. Jun-26-01, 05:40 PM (EST) 18. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" The red light deadlock happened to me in an activity I created last night. But while holding at the red signal, I remembered a post where someone said that if you press the "Tab" key, you may get permission from the dispatcher to proceed. Sure enough, a voice said, "Permission granted." I then proceeded through the red signal without having the activity come to an abrupt end. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-18-01, 08:44 AM (EST) 27. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" Why, cause they make products we want or need Don't blame the programmers, blame the bean counters. I don't work for Microsoft, but I do work in the industry. As a programmer you always want more time to check and double check your work, but the bean counters want to get the product out the door to make the stock investors happy. All software companies are doing it, it's even gotten to the point that you buy a product (Red Baron II) and it comes with a patch If I had my way all new development would take 5 years, of course by then it would be out dated and all the bean counters would be dead from the stress We never heard how many lines of code are in MSTS but I'll bet it's over a millon. Sit down sometime and try to write a book with a millon sentences in it, each sentence can be no less than three words and no greater than 80, it has to be done in a year and see how many typo's you get I'm sorry to say this, but nothing perfect, we are only human, and humans make mistakes, some small some large, I don't want to single out any specific software companies, but there was one who released a sports game that was so buggy they refunded everybodys money and cancelled the game. Does MSTS have problems, yes, is it a great product, yes, did the developers do an outstanding job YES. Don't like MSTS try Train Master, double the price and half the views, no import ability. If you truly hate it, the game comes on CD you can probably take it back for a refund or sell it on Ebay Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

whats the problem, your memory, hardware, video card or what,If you posted your problems, then maybe someone could help unfortunetly 99% of forums like this are filled with messages of people who are having genuine problems, and ask for help and nice people like myself are here to help if we can, but idiots like yourself, should just go and build an ant farm, if you've got nothing constructive to say,I have a small computer with only a 8 meg TNT video card and I think the game is great, yes I've had times when it has frozen but you get that problem with just about every PC game at one time or another. maybe you should buy yourself a rubics cube, maybe a little easier for you. have a nice day.....

Aug-14-01, 11:30 PM (EST) 21. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" Im not sure what US versions are like but the version released in Australia is more like a VIRUS than a game.I have seen a 100% failure rate on 5 separate machines, all well within the system specs and armed with latest drivers for thier hardware.
I paid $95 for this game in Australia so naturally I expect it to perform a little better. Its almost as if MS released the wrong version, they mixed up the beta version with the less buggy final release.THIS GAME LOOKS GREAT BUT A 100% FAILURE RATE IS PRETTY MUCH UNACCEPTABLE IN ANYONES LANGUAGE! Aug-15-01, 07:05 PM (EST) 25. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" I am amazed at the number of people who blame Microsoft for their own inability to properly configure their computers, and it is not just on this forum. I see it constantly. It must have something to do with having to deride someone who is more successful, richer, smarter, whatever. My take on the whole thing goes like this. If you are to dumb to configure your own computer with all the help that you can and do get on these forums, you should take up thumb-twiddling and leave the rest of us to go drive a train. Aug-15-01, 07:06 PM (EST) 26. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-01 AT 07:11 PM (EST)I think it may depend on what you do with it too. My specs:
(homebuilt)
Asus A7-V motherboard
AMD Athlon 800, 384 mb ram
Geforce 2 64mb AGPI have persistent crashes and lockups, mostly with the editors, whose bugs are legion. I have LESS crashes now, because I had 128mb of ram, and added 256 more, and the editors need all they can get. I still get error messages, but the only one that consistently crashes is when you click on "send" instead of "don't send" in that error report thing. That wasn't really put in by microsoft anyway, nobody there would be stupid enough to expect ME to pay THEM 50 bucks to troubleshoot their bugs for them - if they wanted my help they would pay me a consulting fee, and they certainly wouldn't expect me to pay for the beta. That "send error report" screen was actually put in there by a teenage hacker from Naperville who was trying to write a virus to impress his girlfriend, and this was the best he could do. Pretty tame for a virus - all it does is crash your system if you click on the send button, and doesn't corrupt anything else.
My youngest son, on the other hand, hasn't had crashes and lockups because he's not fooling around with the editors.
His system:
(homebuilt)
Super socket 7 motherboard
AMD K6-2 450, 128 mb ram
Voodoo 3 2000 16mb PCI
SETK6 utility running in startup
I had a number of problems with the K6, MOSTLY with MS games, and I tried uninstalling the setk6 utility just to check, and sure enough, just like midtown madness 1 & 2, flightsim2k, and CFS 1&2, MSTS runs for 2 or 3 minutes and locks up every time. This is due to a little known bug in the K6 series chips or the viatech chipset,I forget which, and I think the SETK6V3.zip is still available at either AMD or VIATECH. Strange how Microsoft doesn't seem to even know the problem with the K6 series chips exists, because it affects their games worse than anyone else's. Aug-25-01, 04:40 PM (EST) 28. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" Yes, i agree that MSTS is almost like a dream come true, its truly excellent at what it does, and i've been a flightsimmer for a few years now, but nothing prepared me for the outstanding excellence MSTS has brought. Yes there are a number of small errors/bugs with the prog, but come on for a first release its bloody excellent i think. I've only experienced one hang in the game since i got it about a month ago, and that was today. I just can't wait til the patches/fixes to be released. And lets hope they release a second version in a few years or so.RegardsGary Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-29-01, 06:27 AM (EST) 29. "RE: HEY MICROSOFT" Although I agree there do seem to be a lot of bugs in it at the moment (and I am having my fare share, mainly with the editor) I still think it is very good and a lot of fun. I like the concept of making up trains and performing various shunting operations. This is mainly on the UK scene. It seems to work OK once you get used to the controls. I have my programmable joystick and separate throttle set up to handle the control side. I have added new locos and rolling stock and it is beginning to look like a raiway should. Next step is to try and get the computer controlled trains to show. I also would like to see some people on the stations and in the carriages. I have no doubt it will all come in time. Of course if you go for the goods scene you don't have to worry too much about the lack of people Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
