Mar-06-02, 01:18 AM (EST) "Railroad Accident near Jellico, Tennessee, 1944" I am from Knoxville, Tennessee and I have a question about a railway accident that happened in these parts some time ago. It involves an L & N passenger train. The mishap occured near an area called Highcliff or Highbluff, Tennessee. (Nowdays about one hour's drive north of Knoxville.) A medium-sized waterway flows through this section. (Stinking Creek???) Across the river is U.S. Hwy 25W (may have been called State Route 9). At the time of the wreck it may have also been called Jellico Pike, as the highway runs from LaFolette, Tenn to Jellico, Tenn. On either 6 June or 6 July, (unsure of which) 1944, the before-mentioned train was carrying U.S. soldiers enroute to a training excerise and wrecked in this area. There must have been a signifigant amount of casualties and/or fatalities since their is a memorial plaque on a large boulder in the river. However, the steep, sloping terrain make the boulder viewable only from a small section of the road. When the boulder is viewable the text on the plaque is too small to be legible. Does anybody have any information to share about this?LMcNPS -I do know that a small book was printed about this, entitled "She Jumped the Tracks," or something to that effect, however I am unable to find any evidence the book or the wreck on which the book is based. "RE: Railroad Accident near Jellico, Tennessee, 1944" I don't remember where I read it, but I do recall reading some document a while back that discussed various train accidents over the last century. In it there were a couple items I recall about wrecks in Tennessee. Seemed that the one near High Bluff was a derailment that resulted in 30+ deaths. The other one I recall was a train with a couple cars loaded with explosives headed for a mine. Somehow it detonated while in a rail yard leveling a pretty big area. I think that one was in Jericho or something similar to that. At any rate, the document that I was reading was on the web somewhere. You might try doing a search on Tennesee and Train Wrecks. Been too long ago for my senile old mind to remember where it was.

Mar-06-02, 10:46 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Railroad Accident near Jellico, Tennessee, 1944" I beleive that the second accident that you are referring to happened in Bristol, Tennessee about 1900. In that accident a runaway box car full of pig iron collided with several boxcars full of dyanmite. I'm sure that you can guess the rest.LSMcN Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-06-02, 09:50 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Railroad Accident near Jellico, Tennessee, 1944" Information Retrieved from the Internet:Wreck at Jellico, also known as High Bluff, occurred on July 6, 1944. The book you refer to was written by John P. Ascher, titled "She jumped the tracks: America's tragic stateside 20th century military disaster". Publication date 1994, 220 pages. There is apparently a copy of Mr. Aschers book in the collection in the Tennessee State Historical Society 'Geneology' collection. You might also try seeing if it is listed at Amazon.com, or on eBay.Hope this is what you were looking for.

"RE: Railroad Accident near Jellico, Tennessee, 1944" ge44tonner: No luck with Amazon. eBay might be worth a shot.Update: I found a website whose admin does research on rail accidents of all kinds worldwide. I beleive it is some where in the UK. He directed me to the following link- US DOT special collections. Select ICC reports and when the search page comes up enter 2812 in the file window. Then press search and the wreck report should appear. It is wrongly labelled "Eigh Cliff " The record shows a breif summation of the indicent and a PDF of the Interstate Commerce Commission. (I suppose the DOT had yet to be created.) To everyone who helped with this thread: Thanks for your help and insight. LSMcN Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
