Feb-26-02, 05:02 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Train Damage" i see a train in a flood, the loco looks like half of the back is missing, could be just an illusion from the water. but it looks like half is gone.

Feb-27-02, 03:39 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Train Damage" I think that illusion is from the angle in which the picture was taken.. David Copperfield watch out!!It is good to see that CSX is taking the initiative to remove the shipping industry from the intermodal picture.Just think soon you can take the train from Jacksonville, FL to various points in Europe. Not to mention what train travel to the Caribbean could do to help out Amtrak!!

Feb-27-02, 05:27 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Train Damage" I agree with RDAMON. It appears that the picture was taken with a wide angle lens which has distorted the appearance of the right end of the train. If the photographer was about two feet farther right, you would probably see the other side. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-28-02, 07:13 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Train Damage" Look at the railing at the right of the picture, if it were the angle, it would be gone, wouldnt exist... Look through the railings, no bit of the engine showing... I checked the site its from this was taken after Hurricane AndrewDarkRose Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-11-02, 01:05 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Train Damage" I saw a screenshot of a locomotive on this forum in the past couple days with a similar angle. The effect is the same. It looks like the back half is missing. Try this. Load up a consist with a similar locomotive. Stop the train. Use the outside view (2-key) and rotate around the loco and see what it looks like at different angles and heights. I think this will clearly demonstrate that your photograph show nothing missing except perhaps diving planes and a periscope! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-28-02, 11:33 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Train Damage" I have loaded this picture into PSP7 and zoomed in on the right end and frankly, I'm not convinced that anything is missing. I am sticking with my earlier post that is a wide angle lens and the camera angle that is creating the "illusion" Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

>I have to agree, it's a wide-angle lens. Look at how the "ditch lights" on the back appear to be crooked.Wide-angle lenses (and telephotos) can distort things in a strange-looking way sometimes.

Mar-19-02, 11:20 AM (EST) 16. "RE: Train Damage" This picture appears to be of the Blackwater River Flood in Franklin, Va in Sept. 1999 after a hurricane passed across Virginia dropping 12 to 24 inches of rain in 24 hours. This train was tied up at the station in downtown. It is the local switcher for the Union Camp paper mill and the Hercules Chemical plant. The downtown area was under water for several days as the river crested. This site is on the original Seaboard Airline RR main line that ran from Raliegh, NC to Portsmouth, VA. In 1967, The SAL merged with the ACL and this line was retained and the ACL line was abandoned. It is still active today with a gravel train several days a month, a daily container train and a freight that originate in Rocky Mount, NC. On occasion, grain extras use the line and in very rare instances, Amtrak has used the line to bypass a wreck between Petersburg, VA and Weldon, NC on the CSX. Amtrak gets on the N&W at Petersburg, travels east to Norfolk. There, they interchange to the Norfolk-Portsmouth Beltline RR to get over to Portsmouth where the get on the CSX (old SAL) and head south to Weldon, NC. It is quite a long detour but it can be done as quickly as arranging for busses to meet train and carry passengers and luggage around the wreck.Carlyle Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
