I believe the line "the passengers will please refrain" in
Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans" comes from a song back
in the heyday of train travel, one of the lines of which
had to do with refraining to pull the chain while the train
was in the station.

I like Arlo Guthrie's singing that one....but Goodman wrote it as:
The conductor sings his song again,
The passengers will please refrain
This train's got the disappearing railroad blues.....sounds like the conductor is singing his song.."all aboard"
and yes, passengers will please refrain....as the train leaves the station. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Yes, Arlo did a wonderful job on that..one of my favorite songs
to play on guitar..And it took on a new meaning, or at least I learned to appreciate
it more when I heard it a short time after detraining from
the then "San Francisco Zephyr" after a trip from Oakland to
Denver...<sigh>

Jun-27-01, 02:01 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Train toliet" Yes, they do have holding tanks, however, the waste is supposed to be macerated (ground up) and chlorinated. When the car reaches a certain speed, the tank opens up and dumps the treated (somewhat!) waste out. It doesn't always work the way it's supposed to.A relevant piece of trivia - when the Amfleet equipment first came out on the east coast, almost all railroaders referred to them as "Amcans". They were not among the finest examples of the Budd Company. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I was on the Lake Shore Limited several years ago, enroute from
Chicago-Boston..at the time it was using Heritage Sleeper cars.
There was a rather horrendous winter storm going on between Cleveland and somewhere in upstate NY..all of the "facilities"
on the Amfleet cars froze, and the only option was to use the
facility on the only room on the heritage sleepers not in use..
Actually, it was a power problem, now that I think about it,
which caused the freezing..but, it made for a not very fun
loooooooooong trip across upstate NY.

Jul-27-01, 12:23 PM (EST) 12. "RE: Train toliet" NO ONE MENTIONED THE HONEYBUCKETS!!! On business cars which would sit it the stations occupied, they would place metal buckets underneath the cars which would be collected before the car left the station. Jul-28-01, 01:24 AM (EST) 13. "RE: Train toliet" Wow, I didn't know some passenger service trains still dumped waste on the tracks. On modern diesels, we have various types of toilets, but all hold the waste until the engine reaches a service facility. If it does not require serious maintenance, it's fueled, sanded and toilet is changed out.
At least that's my experience with CSX. We're told that Norfolk Southern crews carry waste bags that fit in a toilet shaped stand, and they have to take it with them and dispose of it themselves. There would be some union reps swinging from the trees if they agreed to such a thing on our rails. That's just barbaric. And I'm not the sensitive type either.Master Qui-Gon Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-31-01, 09:58 AM (EST) 23. "RE: Train toliet" I forgot about the joys of "honeybuckets". Of course, the old business car track at Sacremento station went one better. They built a concrete trough between the rails that acted as an open sewer to flush the waste into the drain. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Toilets do not work afterwards if train not moving....Gravity fed...needs movement to move water from tanks to toilet Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-29-01, 04:00 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Train toliet" As a boy in the 1940s I frequently rode the PRR "Clockers" between Philadelphia and New York City. These were invariably made up of P-70 (non-streamlined) coaches. I used to love to stand in the toilet and watch the tracks fly by underneath. The toilet was nothing more than a hole in the floor with a box and seat built over it. Essentially a rolling outhouse. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-30-01, 03:48 PM (EST) 19. "RE: Train toliet" I think it goes something like this....Passengers must please refrain
From passing water while the train
Is standing at the station
For a while...I don't know that it had anything to do with Arlo Guthrie as it is one that we sang at school and goes on a bit edging into the bawdy...) I can't remember it all now, but some the lines come to mind...Whose the man who did the `pushin',
Left the teethmarks on the cushion,
And his footprints on the dashboard upside down...Maybe that's just the Aussie version. (Apologies Nels, but I've kept it clean).Mike Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-30-01, 04:50 PM (EST) 21. "RE: Train toliet" Well my last time beeing on Amtrack was like 10 years ago and no i'm not a old fart... lol i'am 16 years old but anyway. I remember the little sign over the flush button it said.. "Do Not Flush When Train Is Not In Motion" That I can remember cleary I allways wanted to know why I could not flush it when the train was not moveing. Allthough I followed the rules. Thats why I asked this question. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
