Yes, you can combine the freight locomotives with the passenger cars, by making a new consist with the editor.

Here's something different...an SD-40 leading the way. By copying some files and a bit of config file editing it was possible to turn this AI locomotive into a driveable one.

Check out this consist on the Hisatsu line...SD-40 turned from AI to driveable, repainted GP-38 in New Haven colors, default Dash 9 with a mixed consist of box cars and Amtrak passenger cars.
