Jul-31-01, 09:33 PM (EST) "Trees not visable in game" I copied all the shape and texture files from USA2 into my new route directory, and I copied the .ref file. I've been placing items in the route editor. Everything seems to work fine in the editor, but when I made an activity and entered the route in the game, I could see the buildings but not the trees.I tried copying the EnvFiles, and editing the .trk file, but that didn't help. I've run out of ideas. Any thoughts on why my trees don't show up in game?Thanks in advanceSteve Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-01-01, 02:46 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Trees not visable in game" You probably have corrupted things by copying files. There are hundreds of posts on this board about the complexity of combining objects.The route REF file is one of 12 configuration files that result in objects being available in the route editor.Each route's object list comes from a distinct configuration file set. CARSPAWN.DAT -> The 30 vehicles in the game
FORESTS.DAT -> Vegetation arrays used for populating expanses.
SIGCFG.DAT -> Track signals and lights
SIGSCR.DAT -> Source code scripts for your route's signals
TSECTION.DAT -> The global, NON-editable track/road listing
TTYPES.DAT -> The sound regions in your route
SSOURCE.DAT -> The sound sources in your route
SPOTTER.HAZ/DEER.HAZ -> Animated track hazards
SPEEDPOST.DAT -> Speed limits and signs for your route
GANTRY.DAT -> Electric poles or overheads for the route
TELEPOLE.DAT -> Telephone pole arrays
<routename>.REF -> Mostly static route items / "dumb scenery"
If you list something in the "REF" that should be in one of the other 11 files, that item will probably not work as expected. It depends on which file is read last.There are two shape types: Simple and Complex. The simple types don't need a Texture file or shape description file.The complex types use multiple texture files and may include ESD complex box arrays.Many routes have "overlapping" names. That means items in "route A" have the same names as items in "route B". The problem is the items are not the same thing. The S/SD/ACE files for one of the routes must be used as a set.Some items have many textures. Vegetation may have day and night textures and "Snow, Winter, Wintersnow, Spring, SpringSnow, Autumn, AutumnSnow" texture sets.And a shape may have multiple texture files for different parts of the object.And even worse: Many of the Tree, bush, shrub, and billboard treee line shapes that shipped with the game were incomplete. You must write your own "SD" file for these shapes.So you can't just copy files and use REF information to add items to a route. If you've done anything to the "Track file" while trying to add scenery, you should remove the change.Because trees are referenced in other files, the description tag for vegetation is restricted to 16 characters if you use double-quoted strings.
Here's a subset of the REF file I use, but it relies each tree or bush having files in these paths:<route>\shapes\shapename.s
<route>\shapes\shapename.sd
<route>\textures\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\night\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\snow\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\spring\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\springsnow\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\autumn\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\autumnsnow\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\winter\shape_dependent_name.ace
<route>\textures\wintersnow\shape_dependent_name.aceStatic (

Aug-01-01, 03:21 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Trees not visable in game" The vegetation defaults to detail level 8 in the editor. Turn your game options slider up to object detail level 8 or above. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-01-01, 10:35 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Trees not visable in game" Thank you JohnCS.It was the detail level (actually object density), but it sure wasn't intuitively obvious. I was experimenting, and some vegetation would show up at much lower levels, but the US2fir1 for example wouldn't show up until the object density was max'd.Strangely, the same trees appear to show up in the Marias pass route, even when the density is set lower. Who knows? =8-)Also, BTW, thanks for the DEM extractor. That was the tool needed to really make constructing your own route feasible for people like me who have limited time.Great Job!Steve

Aug-01-01, 11:25 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Trees not visable in game" Select an object (ie a tree) in the editor and right click on it and you can set the density threshold for each individual item. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-08-01, 01:04 AM (EST) 5. "RE: Trees not visable in game" My editor seems to default to 10. When I attempt to "plant" objects at 8 (so I can keep my frame rates decent) trees I thought would appear do not. Is there some built in code for certain objects that only allows them to appear at certain detail settings (like wood and metal fencing???).
