Lidar DEM revisited – image 2

To all and Everyone...Well, once again, I seemingly decided to figure out a way to see if Lidar DEM will work with Microsoft Train Simulator... however, I have not been able to find any programs that can change the file to a readable format. Currently.. the only program I have been able to view this data is Geomatica Freeview V8.2...I and also several others during the meeting here was blown away at just how much detail there was... our quest sort to speak is now to get this into the Route Editor.. but another bump in the road is slowing us down....Lawrence and all, if you are still in contact with Peter (the creator of MicroDEM) can you ask him if there is any way to import this type of DEM.. or is it possible I can get his e-mail address so I could ask him myself....This has been inching me in wanting to see what this may look like and better yet work... but also frustrating in many ways because I have not been able to find anything free that converts DEM data..... If all else fails, I can e-mail Puget Sound Lidar and see what other file formats I can have them converted too... if it does work... Lidar is increasingly becoming more and more open to the public for use.. this could change the way we do terraforming and make design routes alot easlier.. however, the cost would be the frame rates, and overall performance... but how much is the question.............and what would the general effect be....Another thing... MicroDEM 6.1 BETA is out I haven't downloaded it yet, just happened to notice and thought I would pass this along to anybody else...And finally... JohnCS.. Do you think it is possible that the Lidar DEM can be used in DEM Extractor... I think it is a big "way" to detailed for it to handle.. but I thought I may ask just to find out.Off to bed I go.. i wouldn't be surprised if my head explodes from stress and thinking to hard about this....For more information of Lidar... read here.http://www.pugetsoundlidar.org

RE: Lidar DEM revisited

The terrain in the sim has its elevation data on a 8m x 8m grid. So for normal detail, the 10m DEM is about as good as it can get. Where the Lidar looks to shine is along large bodies of water, where it provides the bottom contour instead of the water surface that is provided by standard USGS DEM. With bottom contours, the water height could be set and the water would show up at without having to lower all the points that are supposed to be under water.David Beach.Palouse & LewistonLidar DEM revisited – image 4Route Building 1% Completed
