Just a quick notice to mention that i am 80% complete in laying track down for sydney's cityrail system. For those that know sydney, this area lies from Hornsby down to Waterfall stations and from Emu Plains over to Bondi Junction. A big project but looking good. It has taken a while to get to this stage. Getting the terrain setup using demex and then the tedious plotting of track using correct latitude and longitude figures as well as NSW track diagrams. My next step is to add the models which, due to lack of australian models around i will design most of them myself. Before i do that a question. I want to add lights to the models for night viewing. Do i do this using night textures? any links to tutorials would be of help.I will provide updates of the cityrail project update as i progress further.
Oh... as always save your work often . I was laying track when the pc froze for a minute and then came back and all the track was gone. A little wierd but i have multiple backups on cd so there is no way i will lose work on this project .

You are doing the right thing by burning cd back ups...when i made the Casino Express (payware route) i burned a backup every day that i worked on it... it did come in handy a few times ...

would you be able to give me an idea on how to make a route payware. I assume you mean the only way you release it is by cd or is there another procedure.

if you are intrested in doing a payware route post your work here and with any luck a publisher will contact you...
or some one who has connections will help you...you can also get the route compleat and cut a deal with some one who has a good server and have the route deliverable as a download using a credit card for paymentanother option is burn cd's your self and market it your self but that turns into a full time job...Please be aware a payware route has alot of restrictions every thing must be made from scratch , No MS/Kujo files are allowed, and 99% of the guys that make freeware stuff will not let you use their stuff...
it really is alot of work ...

Thanks for the tip there. I plan to use 100% original models in the route so that shouldnt be a problem. Havnt decided if my route will be free or payware...depends on how much time i spend on it

RE: australian route in progress

The route is contoured. As you know sydney is flat so there are no mountains in the centre.Of course a different story for Blue Mountains. Dem data i have provides good looking contours so its not like driving a flat route. I also have distant mountains fetaure added so looking off to the distance in the west you can see the blue mountains for example

RE: australian route in progress

Glad to see someone is working on a CityRail route, it's a bit of a shame there's no Aus routes yet, the only closest thing to an downunder route is that New Zealand route. The day then I can give my V & S-Set's a true aussie test run is more foreseeable PS: out of curiosity, where did you get the terrain data from?

RE: australian route in progress

I spent about 2 months searching the net for data, found some appropriate data and then purchased demex. I wasnt prepared to spend a couple of thousand dollars to buy the nsw data but what i have makes the route realistic if not exact. I need to review this to see if the dem data is what i need in certain areas otherwise i will modify the terrain where needed

It will be interesting to see how you handle the City underground and the north shore line from Wynyard over the Sydney Harbour Bridge.Good luck with the route, now that there is a fair bit of Sydney rolling stock available, it will be nice to have somewhere to run it.

RE: australian route in progress

the underground sections such as that between the bridge and redfern will be challenging but i have a plan i will test when i get to that stage. I left the city and bondi sections to last while i do more research on underground building. Interesting and lengthy part was doing section of redfern . So many rails to put down and line up. A headache but finally finished.

RE: australian route in progress

The complete metropolitan range of Cityrail is:
North to Berowra,
West to Emu Plains, with branches to Richmond and Carlingford
South to Waterfall,
Old South to Macarthur,
Eastern Suburbs to Bondi JunctionCityRail's Interurban services extend well beyond this and CityRail's Diesel Railcar services extend even further again. It will be interesting to see how you do with the route, considering Australian Dem data is hard to find 'free'. I can do beta testing and examination if you like, as I am a Cityrail Driver. All the best with it.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 7

Actually, I want to see how the track between Central and Wolli Creek comes out, because of the "Fly overs" or "Flying Junctions". I now the main south from Glenfield to Macarthur just about as well if not better then some of the drivers. (hint hint)

RE: australian route in progress

Thanks for the offer i will keep that in mind. Good to see a cityrail driver. I am trying to make this route as realistic as possible. I will most likely be adding the entire range inas you have indicated. Will most likely add that in after i have completed the ground work. When i started this it was like a major task but now so much track has been layed and tested for faults it is not so daunting a project. Finding the dem data was the hardest as i did not want to start the route with flat terrain.

RE: australian route in progress

That's an 'extremely' old diagram of Central Station. I'll dig up some recent track diagrams I have if you're interested.I would have liked to do a route based in sydney but my patience for the route editor is all but expired and my mouse was clocking up too many frequent flyer points. I'll just make stuff to run on it. I wish you the best of luck.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 20

For a better idea of how old that is, that doesn't match my 1994 diagrams of Sydney Metrop System (which are official of course ) and I make regular visits to Central to tell you that that is pre -1994.

Thanks for the offer Craig. That was only an example of the track diagrams i was using to map the route. In this case i had about 80 diagrams to choose from and what i posted here was old. What i have used in my route is more up to date.I'm working on the route pretty quickly now and plan to finish the line to emu plains tonight, do the liverpool line tomorrow and then do the city underground and harbour bridge on monday. When i started this route it took ages to lay the track and get things right......but the more i did the quicker it took to work oout the correct track sections to use.and thanks for the good wishes.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-02 AT 10:43 AM (EDT)

Before i get back to the route design screen which i have grown to love over the last few months, a sneak preview of the route.Have to say i am lucky i am not married as the time i spent on this is extreme. This is a shot taken awhile ago of Chatswood station. As you can see by the sign, i am including the route between chatswood and parramatta which should be fairly interesting. Most of this route is underground and from what i can see will go beneath Lane Cove River rather than over it. A challenge in route design i am sure.I plan to start work on the Parramatta rail link shortly as soon as i get more practice with the tunnels. Need to also work out underground stations before i get there too. Also in the left of the pic you can make out some of the dem data in action. This shot was from the editor itself so does not include the distant mountains which are shown only while driving the route.Doesnt give away too much of my route yet but hopefully gives people an idea of what i am doing
