I purchased this tutorial last week , and finally had a chance to sit down and give it a whirl. I was able to set up the terrain files okay, download the DEM files necessary, etc. I'm now at the step where I'm using XYZ Merge to merge the files. I have three DEM files, 10x10 resolution. XYZ Merge found the files I wanted to work with. When I hit the "Execute" button, XYZ Merge automatically opened MicroDEM (as it is supposed to.) Now, it appears I am in an infinite loop. A small window with the title "Header" keeps opening and closing. It appears to be the same window. It's been going like this for approx. one hour now. Is this normal? Rich Garber's tutorial says it will take a while. (Actually, it says to "walk away from the computer.) Is this activity I'm experiencing normal? What kind of time frame should I be expecting for these files to merge? This is my first time working witn DEM's, so I'm stumbling along. Any help. advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.Regards,
Tom

RE: Question re: Rich Garber's DEM Tutorial

I'd suggest you download the latest version of DEMEX from http://www.demex.vcn.comIt doesn't require use of Microdem to merge DEMs, and fixes a number of serious omissions/bugs in the early Demex version Rich is peddling.Regarding your problem, I've never used XYZMerge but I believe it may be dependent upon a specific version of Microdem - you should check that the version you're running is compatible.

That version is no longer available at Dr. Guth's Web site. The reason for that is because the programmer for XYZMerge used a SendKeys type of command to manipulate MicroDem. Unfortunately for the programmer, Dr. Guth changed the menu structure, thus, rendering XYZMerge useless...unless you have the specific version of MicroDem.It was at this time that I started contacting Dr. Guth about the problem and seeing what could be done. Shortly after that, you, John, came out with the public release of Demex. Probled solved.Lawrence

RE: Question re: Rich Garber's DEM Tutorial

When you make your donation to Rich Garber for the tutorial, he sends you an email with a link to download the appropriate software. I would believe he would point you to the correct versions.Tom

RE: Question re: Rich Garber's DEM Tutorial

Tom, I had exactly the same thing happen to me. Here's how I got around the problem. Before you press the 'execute' button, put a small value, I used 1) in the 'Delay Constant' field. Like yourself I had about five or six entries to be processed. Run XYZ and I had windows poping open and closing fairly quickly. I became suspicous after the first DEM was processed, could see it in the DEMEX window, it never updated the window again and the windows just kept comgin and going. I didn't have the patience to wait an hour. Was also suspicous when I stopped the process that there was only one processed file. Basically what you're doing is inserting a 'wait state' in between each command as it is executed. This helped me, may help you too.Matt

RE: Question re: Rich Garber's DEM Tutorial

Ah, yes. I forgot about the Delay Constant. Isn't it mentioned in the tutorial? I thought that there was something about using the value of 2 with a PIII, 667mhz.Lawrence

RE: Question re: Rich Garber's DEM Tutorial

Upon further reflection, Tom, on this thread, I have to agree with JohnCS about using the new version of Demex--for two reasons.First, it will do mostly everything that took 3-4 programs in Rich's tutorial, thus simplifying the process immensely.Second, JohnCS states in the help file of the new version of Demex that you should NOT! use XYZ format as an input file. Therefore, if you decide to use the tutorial but with the new version of Demex, your results may not be what you want.Lawrence
