This is my latest rock canyon using a 1024 X 1024 Ace file for the terrtex. Much sharper, and I didn't notice a frame rate hitwhen I ran a log train up here.Since this is custom to the location, nor very useful for anyone else, but....I'm working on a tutorial on making custom terrtex aces to fit your location. Working from digital photos, and using PSP, it's really quite easy!By the way, Thanks for the Great trestle Rick!

I LUST for that trestle. Be advised, I dunno whether this applies to terrtex or not, but the DV blast furnace was originally uploaded with 1024x1024 textures, and caused any system with less than 32mb of video RAM to lock up. The older vid cards apparently can't handle remapping textures that large.

What exactly do you mean by remapping? Generating mips? mapping the texture to the surface for different distance levels? Not that the sheer size of a 1024x1024 texture isn't enough to make a 16MB vid card cough a little bit (a 32-bit, uncompressed texture without header overhead is 4MB). And where might I find the original (uncorrected) DV blast furnace? I'd like to do a little testing.

Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology, resizing? You know, when you're running at 800x600 it has to either enlarge the 640x480 cabview or reduce the 1024x768, I forget which it does. The system I did all the testing on has a 14 inch monitor from an old 386 that won't go higher than 800x600, but I had an ASUS A7V mobo, AMD Athlon 1400 underclocked to 1050mhz, 128mb PC-133 SDRAM, and with a Voodoo3-2000 16mb PCI card it would lock up, replacing the Voodoo with a GEFORCE 2 GTS/PRO 64mb AGP card it would run either hoboken 5 or bodiddly 7 with the 1024x1024 blast furnace texture. I opened the blast furnace tex in TGAtool2, resized to 512x512, and with that texture the Voodoo3 had no problem with it on either route. I definitely confirmed the vid card was the problem tho, swapping one size texture for the other back and forth, the voodoo ran the resized 512x512 one every time, locked up on the 1024x1024 every time. I dunno if any of the originals are still around, but I can email you the original dv_blast2.ace, it's only 390kb.

Yeah, email it to me. I've got an athlon 750 with a voodoo3 3000AGP that ought to behave about the same. It might be a scaling problem, and it might not. All of the 1024x1024 files produced by makeace don't contain the mips, which means the hardware is left with the job of producing them when the object specifies that it ought to be mipped and the texture isn't. I can test this, since I can now make mipped 1024x1024 textures. I reeeeally need to get DXT support implemented before these things become viable for anything. Another thing I've found is there are named_texture_filters (like MipLinear and such) that tell the sim not to mip it at all. I'm going to try setting the blast furnace to that too.

Never assume that no one else will be able to use the texture. Uploaded that bad boy and let the users decide. I actually may have a need for it. -- John Tackett --
