LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-02 AT 07:16 PM (EDT)

Hi, I'm just wondering, can someone pllllllllease update my PON4? I just tried to add what i wanted in the route editor; but alas, to no avail. here's what i want.An old time station (preferably the New Liberty station here in the file library. I even have it here as an attatchment) at Armstrong, right the blue station name is, and one right by the two bridges coming from armstrong. I'm young, so i don't have any money, but i'd very much be happy if someone did this! thanks!-Creating Pac-Man comics for the humorless people out there:+

RE: can someone please update my PO&N4

When you added the station to your PON4, did you also update the routes .ref file? if you didn't, it wont work! First you copy the .s and .sd files into the "shapes" folder for the route you want to add on to. Then copy the .ace files in to the "Textures" folder. Now back up the routes .ref file by copying it to a safe place. Open the .ref file with WORDPAD (not NOTEPAD). You need to add the following info for yur new object...
Static (
Class ( TSModeler )
Filename ( lgcoal1.s )
Align ( None )
Description ( lg_coal_twr )
)Static tells the sim this is a "static" or non moving object, or that it is not interactive in the sim.Class is the catagory in the Route Editor the new object will appear under...use whatever name you want ( "Buildings"is ggod!)Leave "Align" alone.Description is the name you want in the route editor menuBe sure you get all the perentheses...it won't work if you leave one
out!Save your changes, go into the RE and everything should work for you.

RE: can someone please update my PO&N4

Hee-hee, I'm old and I don't have any money, is there a magic age and I skipped it?
Seriously, the worst trouble with having someone else do it for you, for free or for money, is the fact that they probably won't get it just the way you want it, and even if they get it close, you'll want some other modification later on. So you might as well learn how to do it yourself, it does get easier with practice.
I'm not gonna ask why you prefer PO&N4 to PO&N5, cuz I'm assuming it's just a matter of personal taste, which underscores my point above. To me PO&N5 is an improvement over 4, which should be obvious since it woulda been kinda silly to intentionally update the route in a way that it wasn't as good! But everyone has different tastes and preferences, so some people prefer earlier versions, and there are even some strange people like flarrfan lurking around here that don't like the PO&N in ANY version!
Anyway, enough jabbering, on with the tutorial. Hunting up PO&Nver4.exe and blowing the cobwebs off of it, I re-install it (I'm halfway thru V6 at the moment, haven't looked at V4 in a while!), and download Joe's Liberty station. Can someone please update my PO&N4 – image 2First I unzip the little beggar to a temp folder. Then I look at the readme.txt file, in this case no help here, but I find a file named REF file, and open that in wordpad. Can someone please update my PO&N4 – image 3
Scrolling down to \Train Simulator\Routes\Portogden4, I also open the portogden4.ref file in wordpad. Copying all the text out of the sample ref file (most add-on objects come with this either in the readme or seperately), I switch to \Portogden4.ref and scroll all the way to the bottom, and paste the copied text in under the last parenthesis. Saving the portogden4.ref, I go on to the next step, getting all the files in the right places. Can someone please update my PO&N4 – image 4
Any file ending with .s or .sd goes into the route's \Shapes folder, any file ending with .ace goes into \Textures. Some add-on objects have night and snow textures, usually these would have the required files already in subfolders, so you'd just copy the subfolders. Can someone please update my PO&N4 – image 5
Opening PO&N4 in the route editor, I fly over to Armstrong with the arrow keys, hunt thru the object menu for the new station, and place it on the ground somewhere. Hmmm. Not a real good object for a beginner, Joe screwed the pooch and the default height is buried halfway in the ground. After deleting the existing kitbashed station, I use the movement key to lift the new station up so it's at ground level, move it into position, and rotate to align it with the tracks. It don't fit too well, the space between the tracks is a little narrow. I place one of the other platforms on the other side, add the roof supports, and move-align-rotate-curse-try again-finally until I get it to where it looks good, then save the route. Whew. After all that, I just gotta run a train on it to see what it looks like. Can someone please update my PO&N4 – image 6
You're having problems with anything specific, just holler. Placing or replacing static objects is the easiest part of the route editor, and if a dummy like me can learn it, so can you!

RE: can someone please update my PO&N4

Oopz, you said the "T" word! Hee-hee! I dunno, I downloaded and tried out the Trainz demo, didn't like the cabview, and even with the fogging distance cranked out as far as it would go the visibility was too short and there wasn't much detail, and it stuttered and jerked anyway. I know the minimum system specs are a little higher, but I got:Tower case, 350 watt power supply
Three 80mm 12v case fans
Motherboard: ASUS A7A-266
Processor: AMD Palimino XP1600+
Memory: 768MB PC-2100 DDR RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti-4400 128MB AGP
Hard disk: WD Caviar Ultra ATA-100 7200rpm 40 gig hd
Sound: Creative SB 512 PCI
OS: Windows 98 Second Edition, build 2222, DX 8.1
Modem: Speedstream 5260 Ethernet 300 DSL
ISP: SBC AmeritechWhich is more than enough horsepower. There was a lot of flamewarz going on for a while over which one was better, but MSTS looks a lot better to me, and even with much more detail it actually runs smoother. Sure it has bugs, and the front coupler didn't work right before the patch and still has a few problems, but can you do switching at all in Trainz? I didn't even see an option for uncoupling cars!
I've received several emails asking permission to do a Trainz version of PO&N, and told them all go ahead, knock yourself out. So if the "surveyor module" is as easy to use as it's reputed to be, somebody's Trainz version of the PO&N oughtta be out by now.
As far as my rep for being a nice guy and a mister know-it-all, it's overblown. I answer questions that interest me, ignore the ones that don't, talk about what I know about, and speculate about the rest!

Hey Jim, you really ought not to use crayon on your monitor (like in your 3rd image up there). It's a pain to remove.

RE: can someone please update my PO&N4

hey, everybody, thanks a lot! Sniper, just fyi, I like PO&N4 better because it reminds me of an amusement park, and the best part OF an amusement park (besides the coasters!!!!) which is the park train. PO&N5 just seems too indutsrial. Speaking of which,...nah, i'll just post in the loco design forum. but anyways, thanks!

RE: can someone please update my PO&N4

You like the roller coaster aspect, you just GOTTA try Bill Burnett's Seaview route! Even a short train with 10 cars or so is a challenge if you don't wimp out and turn off derailments.

Wait a minute........You mean you can turn them ON??? I haven't had them on in months. As a result, my on track record is great! ......except when I place my head elsewhere and motivate my train through that little yellow bumper on to the grass/rock/hole in ground/hill/kitchen sink, etc. You RE types oughta know what I'm speaking of.Bradley Linda

Without trying to start a flame war about Trainz verses MSTS, I have to agree that MSTS is all you stated, but keep in mind that Trainz is always being improved. I would recommend checking out their site for the latest features every few months.Sam Schulenburg
