I could be wrong on this, but I believe Viaduct is a style, as Trestle, Truss, etc. I think the style was named after the Aquaducts and Viaducts created in ancient Rome (and Italy). Anybody have any more insight on this? Hawk "Last night I heard an old freight whistle blow%2

RE: Simple question, but a question anyway
the word "viaduct" can be broken down into two words. "via" and "duct". a duct is any tube, pipe, road, ect. for carrying something. like water or air ect. via means "by way of". so your train or car or you ect. can travel "by way of" the road or train tracks.

RE: Simple question, but a question anyway
All of the above are pretty much correct. Viaducts are usually thought of as structures that resemble the old acqueducts etc. For example, Wells Viaduct on the Southern near Toccoa, GA is not your typical trestle in that plate girders are supported on tall concrete piers. Copper Creek on the Clinchfield, as well as Boone Creek are referred to as bridges in CSX vernacular, but they are actually steel trestles by most everyone elses definition. However, the old Milwaukee Road referred to it's many steel trestles in the Bitteroots as "bridges" as well. Confusing isn't it.J. H. Sullivan, P.E.

RE: Simple question, but a question anyway
Don't viaducts also have retaining walls, usually solid, on both sides of and above the roadbed.
