LAST EDITED ON Feb-16-02 AT 07:04 PM (EST)I have been experimenting with engine sheds to stop smoke appearing through the roof.It has been suggested that using a complex bounding box will fix this out, however Collision Detect has to be on in the model. How does one turn on Collision Detect in a model. I have been looking at the Settle & Carlisle line, at the default start point are rows of houses using the shape 'housesemi_four.s'Selecting these houses with F2 and right clicking brings up their properties along with a Collision-Detect tab, however if you select the same houses further from the track, which use the same shape file, there is no Collision-Detect tab.I had therefore assumed that it was proximity to a track which showed the Collision Detect tab, but this does not appear to be so as I have added the same shape file to my own route, placed it next to the track and no sign of Collision-Detect - Any ideas?Mike (in Penrith, NSW, Australia)

RE: Collision Detection

hi mike!in RE try "ctrl+m" , this will show the bounding boxes, which reflect the collison-objects.these bounding boxes are defined in the .sd of the object. there is also a topic in one techdocs for this topic aviable.mc

RE: Collision Detection

Thanks mc.I have spent the weekend fiddling with bounding boxes, collision detection and smoke thru shed roofs The following is what I have come up with so far:-To stop smoke going through station roofs (like Carlisle station), the collision detection must be on (you can do this in the route editor when you first select the model in the 'Object Selector', you must select Collision from the Interaction button at the foot of the Object Selector screen.) This explains why smoke comes through some bridges on the ECML and not others If you do not have collision detection on for a model, even if you have defined bounding boxes, the bounding boxes will not appear in MSTS when you press CTRL +You must then define a rectangular bounding box the size of the station, but at roof level, and at least 2 meters deep. The smoke will then enter this box, turn around and spill back down on to the engine. This works fine for Carlisle station but unfortunately, I can not get it to work for engine sheds as there appears to be a minimum distance above the loco's funnel at which the bounding box must be for the system to work. As the UK sheds have sloping roofs, unless you increased the shed height to an improbable amount, then the smoke still escapes through the angle of the roof.I even tried two bounding boxes, one above the other, and one inside the other, but no luck.Back to the drawing board...Mike in Penrith, Australia

RE: Collision Detection

Mike Mate, it looks like the only solution to this problem is to be like those Aussie refs, develop 'tunnel-vision'. That way, all you'll see is what you want to see and the escaping smoke will vanish, out of sight, out of mind - no problemo! Cheers from across the Pond Don't let the computer WIN!
