Feb-03-02, 00:19 AM (EST) "I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" Let's face it brother route designers, we are getting the short end of the stick in every way manageable thanks to MSTS. This is a little tongue and cheek humor aimed at those, who continue to chide us route designers, and you know who you are. :-_)Let me sum it up this way:I've been on here practically since the beginning and here's what I seen.First, we get stuck with one of the more cantankerous editors. And yet we perservere laying hundreds of miles of track, scenery, and terrain so not only ourselves, but others can run their engines and cars on our route.Second, we were the first to get hit with the plea to make our routes easy for the masses to install, and we did so. Yet, only now do we see some of our fellow 'others' using installs to make their 'products' as easy to install.Third, then we find out there is this EULA thing so we work for free whether we want to or not.Fourth, if we even think about charging, we get plastered with the how dare yous!Fifth, when a loco texture is 'borrowed' the borrower gets tarred and feather for even just thinking about borrowing without permission. Yet, when a pic is displayed of somebody's loco or car on one of our routes, nobody even thinks to ask if we were asked permission that our route was used as their backdrop.Sixth, when it comes to newbies or anything else, we answer the most questions asked and have been since I've been on here, yet, in they come with ineuendos of 'please don't flame me or hate me because I'm new.' Seventh, through the efforts of many we have probably found out probably more of the unadvertised features of this editor and MSTS with next to little or no help from the designers or manuals or whatever. Yet, often we are criticized for not being helpful enough even though we have written more tutorials (pay and free) than any other forum here. And it was 'us' route designers who had to go out and figure out how the Activity Editor worked too!And I'm not even going to mention the disparaging comments and the discouraging times we had to endure by those who pursued 'greener' pastures in a product whose 'gift' was a friendlier and more stable editor than ours which they gleefully pronounced dead months ago.Now isn't it about time that 'some us and some of those and some of you' get off us route designers backs? It's not enough that it takes us months to complete even a small route. It's not enough that we don't answer every email. It's not enough that we have to forget there is a thing called life. It's not enough that we've scratched and clawed our way to produce what we can. You put yourself in our shoes and try to do what we have to do, and see if you don't get a little cranky once in awhile. And frankly, I don't see all this crankiness that some of you have to keep accusing us of either. So just ask your question and 'park' the false humility at the door please. Thanks! Rich GarberOh.. for those who are wondering why this is coming out of the clear blue. It's because I don't have enough fiber in my diet lately. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I would prefer a few Valium myself. I'm feeling about like rgarber myself at the moment, having just rebuilt my track database and losing 100 miles of very well placed singals. Even though I am a relative newbie, I have found my share of pitfalls as well. Found help for some, hacked my way through others myself. This IS NOT a user friendly process. Nothing is obvious or intuitive in the "Windows" sence, and the do's and don'ts are not well documented, if at all.BUT, I have found the support available here invaluable and would be willing to provide anyone that asks with what I have learned - for what it is worth. For starters, read the archives in this site. Its' all been, RGE'd, DEM'd, markered, mapped, extracted, poked, prodded, vectored, graded, ripped out, rebuilt, crashed, corrupted, reloaded, started over, dynamic'd, backwards switched, signaled, uploaded, downloaded, cussed, RAM'd, CPU'd, smacked, and just plain unloaded before. But it sure is nice when you run your first train on even a section of an incomplete route that has not been done before.

Feb-03-02, 01:38 AM (EST) 3. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" I have spent over 400hrs (no kidding) putting together the route that I am currently working on since Sept. It will be released later this month along with all new textures, shapes, locos and equipment made by my partner in this project. Unfortunately the files will be too big to download, so a small charge will have to be assessed to cover the costs of making the route, the CD's and shipping. It will still cost much less than any available commercial routes and is far superior in quality and detail. However, I will let those who purchase be the final judge of that. If the response is positive, there will be more to come and it will only get better. This is not an advertisment as I have left the project name out of this thread. I am just asking those MSTS users out there to think of what goes in to this part of the SIM and realize that quality routes take time and alot of effort. Be patient with us route hackers and be thankfull that we have perservered. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

If I may extract another piece of information from this for anyone considering their own first route project, it takes many many hours to get very little done. As a Newbie, I have right at one month of long evenings since Christmas working on the 470 mile SP Coast Route, and only 100 miles of mainline to show for it so far. The learning curve is big however and I find myself getting faster and more determnined than ever to whip this thing. And to rgarber, I gained many answers to my own questions by quietly reading your threads. Don't get discouraged. Remember what it was like when you started out. Maybe we should get together and post a "First Time Route Building Advice" sheet of basic do's and don'ts to take the load off. Just an outline of the order in which things are done, or how the related files interact and a list of pitfalls would have helped me immensly. But I'm getting long winded as I take a break from track laying.Cheers! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-03-02, 05:14 AM (EST) 5. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" Right on Rich....I've been working on my route since September and although I've had my share of route crashes they came early on. I have no idea how many hours I've spent on the route but it's a lot....Plus the time spent to research the route to (hopefully) get it somewhat true to prototype.
It doesn't help living 10 000 miles away from the place I'm trying to build either.
I spent my first couple of weeks on the forum "lurking" and reading just about every post there was. That way I didn't have to ask a question already answered. (Hint to a lot of people).
I do know it can be difficult to find something with the search function sometimes so I'll answer a good question if I know the answer.
I get really annoyed though, when people are too lazy to even read the posts on the same page! There was some (lazy jerk?) who asked a question a few weeks back and the answer was three posts down.... Someone like that won't get much support from me So to those complaining about poor support from the "community" I say, Do your homework and ask specific questions and your chance of getting a reply will increase greatly.I learned all I know about MSTS here on this forum and so can anyone else. It's a great knowledge-base and I for one is very grateful for the efforts put down by some people figuring out and solving the workings of this simulation.
Thanks to those concerned...Message Areas - "I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" – image 1 Nalle Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-03-02, 10:05 AM (EST) 6. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" Well,I have been working on my (ECML) route since last june! Its popular and very detailed, Laying the track is one thing but doing a british or even some of the european routes it takes more time to lay out the vegetation than it does to do the track!Britian especially is a well vegetated green land with pockets of buildings cluttered together in small area's, it takes so much time to lay all this out and to get the trade off in frame rates to make the route at least look the part.Like you say we do a difficult task for little reward.I look at it this way - I build my route for my pleasure, release updates when I feel like it (basically when i reach a convenient break). It would be interesting to see the full inbox if I stopped now though Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-03-02, 05:17 PM (EST) 8. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" Hey, let Rich vent all he wants. Having worked with him on a minor portion of the EMRR, I know that he works his butt off to provide an extremely high quality product - all for free. We used to start emailing each other at sometimes 4 or 5 am, and be at it all day, or until I finally just wore out.All this for a totally free product requiring several hundreds of man-hours to produce! There are tons of extremely grateful folks out there, and the gripers are in the very small minority. I know they get ya down, but just take some time to vent, then kick back and relax.I, for one, appreciate every thing you do!(and this goes for you too sniper, and a bunch of others!)
Just think, what if we had to PAY for this stuff!

I have put in many hours of my own time with the route I am working on. The main difference between the other designers and my self, is I found that I have less talent at this then they have. Still the pleasure I obtain when I solve, or create sections of my layout, far exceed any monitary compensation I might recieve ( My wife states that I am not to give up my day job Sam Schulenburg

Feb-03-02, 07:31 PM (EST) 10. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" It's not just Microsoft.
Several other tools necessary to build a route are for non commercial use only.Sure it might be possible to sell a few dozen copies of a route but if you get stuck with fees upon fees and high priced programs, why bother. When I go to Sears to buy a tool I don't have to pay more for it if I'm building a house to sell. Sure if I buy a duty tool ment for continous use I'll pay more but I'll get more. I'm not criticing the welcomed freeware and shareware just saying be careful what you use to build you route if you plan to sell.I'm a newbe but have learned a lot by listening, reading refrences and asking a few dumb questions. Feb-03-02, 09:38 PM (EST) 12. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" I don't see Sears giving away those tools....Differing tiers for commercial software development have been around for a long time.I'm not sure you guys realize how good we really have it. The EULA for Infogrames Independence War 2 dev-kit states that not only can nothing created with it be sold, but by consenting to use it you give Infogrames copyright on anything you create and the right to distribute/sell it as they see fit without compensation. Kuju invested alot more resources into their tools than a simple script compiler.Just try selling a user-created level (ie route) with the Quake 3 engine without coughing up some $$ to id. Feb-04-02, 09:36 AM (EST) 15. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" I don't expect programs for free. I didn't name names on purpose. In fact there are excellent programs out there I love using that I can't wait to send reasonable dollars for the registered version. I just hope if I do later want to sell a few copies, I wouldn't find the cost involved unreasonable. In some cases if one plans to sell a route it may be necessary to use less than the best program in order to avoid restrictions.Plan before getting too far. Read the agreement.I believe there is ( or will be ) a demand for many personal favorite routes, but not in the thousands. A big seller would sell a few hundred, but most a few dozen. Tools to build these routes must be reasonable or they will not be sold. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-04-02, 04:07 AM (EST) 14. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" I guess each of us who put together some of the tools used here have our own motives.
TSTF is freeware for 2 fundamental reasons. Firstly, it borrows hugely from good work done by several other people, some specifically for TS and some not. Whilst I've put this all together and thrown in some original features of my own, I don't feel entitled to charge for it, even if I wanted to. Secondly I don't want the pressure and hassle of trying to promote a toolset when there's my livelihood depending, in part, on it - I enjoy the freedom that freeware authoring brings.TSTF is available for commercial use upon payment of a nominal fee to a charity of my choice - BBC Children in Need. Feb-04-02, 05:52 PM (EST) 22. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" I agree with the top statement, and I even get asked to support Abacus' Roundhouse. About 500hrs I spent putting together what I did of L1, and I've spent about 20 on L2.
It was fine towards the beginning, but then people started emailing me saying, this building is one foot off, or it would be more interesting if all the stations looked different. Why, don't you make some CTA 'L' cars? I'm getting bored with the MSTS 2000 series cars. You're turns are too wide. What is this runme.bat file for, and why do I get all these errors when I try to load Train Sim? I don't see ANY scenery, and I keep running the Red line right through the central business district, all I see is just track, subway, then track!.
To tell the truth, I have all the scenery completed from Forest Park to about Kostner on the Congress branch of the Blue line, but due to a mishap during construction, I have to go and click on every track piece so that it can be used again. There are a lot of track pieces. I would love to let everyone see the scenery, but I don't know if I have the energy in me to go through what I did before, again.-Chris

If I get around to actually building a route, believe me I will be using DEM. My efforts to date tell me that freelancing is not going to be my strong suite. As for the signals, they start out vertical...until I have to change their facing. Then it all goes to heck. Feb-04-02, 05:41 PM (EST) 21. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" RichI tried responding to this yesterday but couldn't get it to work. I think my PC needs fiber! Sounds like you have to much time on your hands and could do more route work if you have all this time to type this message!!! : )I started initally back in June with the IC route. It was all flat as we didn't have DEM import at that point. Made some errors and learned some things so when JohnCs came out with his program, I scrapped my work and started over. Had about 40 miles done then.I started over in July and released the first 47 miles in September. I'm still going strong and now have Trouble working with me. I like seeing my route in the backdrop and don't get upset when it isn't mentioned. I know it's mine and that is all that matters to me. I've already told Trouble that if tomorrow I decided not to work on the route anymore, and I'm not going to do that, I give it to him no strings attached. I'm in this for me and don't mind sharing it with others. I've gotten many good suggestions for improvements and fixes. Some though I don't want to do and I will say so, since this is my route. Except for the last 2 months, I spent at least 2 hours a day for 4 months to get things where they are. That is a minimum time, some days like weekends I'd work 6 hours easy. My wife would complain, then she saw the pictures from others with my route and the emails from people in other countries with it and she became impressed. So I keep plodding along and having fun.

Feb-04-02, 08:38 PM (EST) 25. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" Alright... this is really bad.. I'm gonna have to do a Lawrence Kellie here and get you all to reread my message.. but first.. a time out for a commercial break.David Klemm... I GOT MY MEDAL OF HONOR! But I keep timing out trying to connect to the servers so once I get that working.. we will do battle! Okay, enough commercial (and yes I saw that Bjorn or should I call you Sniper Jr. ).Note the first line: "This is a little tongue and cheek humor aimed at those, who continue to chide us route designers, and you know who you are. :-_) "See, that was c...o...d...e... to tell you all it was meant to be taken in semi-jest. Really, it was. But, what had irked me was cleverly disguised in #6: "Sixth, when it comes to newbies or anything else, we answer the most questions asked and have been since I've been on here, yet, in they come with ineuendos of 'please don't flame me or hate me because I'm new.'"Now that stuff bothers me, it really does. For example... Here's a recent message from someone we don't know, who doesn't know us and I just made up... " Hi! I'm new and I've been told or how else would I know, that this place is full of information but before you'll give it to me, I've been told I'll be tortured, brutalized, beat-up and snotted on and then some smart guy will tell me to search for the answer anyway. Please show me to my room of doom and punish me now. Thanks!" Now don't you just want to jump in with both feet and love that person? As for the rest of my complaints I was basically patting us on the backs. Let's see... did you catch that I got my covert-op 'smear' against the OTHER train doo-hickey thingamabopper... I'm sure you all caught that.. but don't nobody say nothing cause you know what that will start...So I'm not really venting. I'm just going... uhhh... there's something about many hours in MSTS route editor that I believe makes a man go batty. Yeah, batty. Clearly I am doing that. Not that anything is going wrong... it's just THIS TAKES FOREVER!!!! I'm six tiles from be able to say I got the rough draft done!??!!??? Not really. Actually this is going pretty quick. It just feels like forever. Just like it feels I'm going batty.

Feb-05-02, 01:37 AM (EST) 30. "East Metro Railroad for Sale?" (Big City) Rumors are abound in the local business community regarding the East Metro Railroad (EMRR) may be up for sale. After the recent interest by RailAmerica, and the Port Ogden and Northern, our sources believe this may have prompted at least one Class 1 railroad to take a look at the EMRR. In the 80's the Class 1 roads shed excess properties through abandonment and spin offs to regional and shortline railroads. Now we are seeing some of these same spin offs repurchased by the Class 1's, which many in the railroad business never thought that would happen. We have contacted the spokeperson for the EMRR and they have "no comments". However we managed to spot an apparent CSX Inspection train pulled by an EMRR locomotive was spotted just outside downtown. (see photo below) It appears there maybe a sunset on the horizon for the EMRR. At this time it is too early to speculate on the impacts to community if the potential suitor reduces the workforce on the railroad. This reporter will continue to follow this story.Message Areas - "I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" – image 5 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-05-02, 11:17 PM (EST) 38. "Interest in East Metro Railroad heats up!" (Big City) Yesterday we reported on unconfirmed rumors, Richmond, VA. transportation giant CSX was considering purchase of the EMRR, this coming on the heels of talks with RailAmerica and others. Well, interest in the shortline is heating up, today another "inspection train" was spotted, passing the station in Metro. What was highly unusual was the VIA (Canadian version of Amtrak) locomotive, diner and sleeper behind the EMRR locomotive. Calls to the EMRR main office went un-answered, and VIA would not disclose who had chartered the train. One can only assume either Canadian Pacific (CP) or the Canadian National (CN), both have been on a buying spree, even after CN's failed merger attempt with BNSF. The Big City News will keep you posted as the saga continues.Message Areas - "I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" – image 6(locomotive and route used without permission of author)

Feb-05-02, 03:39 PM (EST) 34. "RE: I think its time us Route Designers go on strike!" I think that you route builders are some pretty funny people. I've also been working with the route editor since the programs release. Mostly for my own enjoyment, but I've also been involved in comercial work as well. I had to learn the hard way that getting paid for doing something that I enjoy can almost take the fun out it.First things first, if I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't be putting myself at the mercy of the route editor. This forum and it's members have proven to be an invaluable source of information, help, thoughts, ideas, and even comic relief.I want to say thanks to everyone for their help, and their patience. And please try to be nice to the new people to the forum. All it might take is one nasty reply to what you might think is a stupid question to run them off. By doing that everyone looses.Have a great day!!!!!!!!!Lonnie
