Well here is what you do im assuming you already have the blue x marks on the geo map correct? If so then choose a place where you want to start editing right click and pick choose start tile from the pull down menu and this will keep you from seeing white in the route editor. Oh make sure you choose a start tile where one of the blue x marks are.

Tips & Tricks -Route Design
Here are some general tips & misc. knowledge for designing routes:
Keystoke Summary
y = conform terrain to selected track section. This may take a few seconds to compute.
h = puts selected object at terrain elevation while moving.
t = toggles the available track sections (valid when track section appears as 'wireframe')
w = toggle wireframe
f = flatten current terrain selection
+/- = move the sun around
Ctrl = I'm not sure, but a 'plus' sign appears. Please tell me if you know.
'F-Keys' = 'clicks' one of the icons.
Laying Track
There are 3 things you should do at the moment you put a piece of track on the ground:
i) Conform terrain
ii) Adjust the grade using the rotate command
iii) Conform terrain again
If you 'move' the end of one piece of track close to the end of another piece, they will automatically join.
Laying switches
When you lay switches, realize that there is a difference between the manual and AI controlled switches. For example, AltPnt10dLft.s can only be switched by the computer, whereas AltPnt10dLftMnl.s will allow for manual operation.
Textures
Multi-select tiles by holding the shift key.
Apply texture by pushing the number of the texture, as seen in the texture window.
Circular Paths
MSTS does not support 'circular paths. In other words, you will not be able to create even a simple loop, such as those found on model railroads. You can, however, put a reversing loop at each end of your mainline. (This has yet to be tested)
The Roundtable
It is for decoration only. It doesn't really work. Sorry. Can you say 'Version 2.0'?
Here is some other info I found out there, I am real sorry but don,t know the authers name:
So you want to build your own route? But can't find the shapes that are used in the supplied route? Well here is how, but first - I DO NOT EXCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR AN MESS-UPS THAT HAPPEN TO YOUR MACHINE.OK, with that out of the way here we go.We will use the name 'test' as your route name (subsitute your real name where needed).Next we will say that you want to use the shapes from the Flying Scotsman route.1.) Copy the shape files from the Europe1 shapes directory into the 'test' shape directory.
2.) Next copy the 'settleca.ref' to the root directory of 'test' (You will find a file in the directory called 'test.ref'
3.) Rename the file 'test.ref' to 'test.old'
4.) Rename the copied 'settleca.ref' file to 'test.ref'
5.) Open the route editor, choose 'open' from the file menu, select the route 'test'. on the left is an option to something somethinf database, click the box then press 'OK'
You should now have the shapes appear in your objects menu.
IF ANYTHING SHOULD GO WRONG, JUST RENAME 'TEST.OLD' BACK TO 'TEST.REF'
I hope this helps nick
