I was looking through Union Pacific's Locomotive Roster and had a question I hope someone can answer for me.1. It lists a c44-9W (#9665-9834) and also C44-9 (#9564-9664) Q: What's the difference between the two models?2. It also lists C44AC (#6173-7297) and C44/60AC (#7010-7079) and C44CCTE (#5700-5863). Q: Now I belive that the C44AC is 4400hp and the C44/60AC was 6000hp. But is there any other difference? Also, is there any difference between them and the C44CCTE? What I was thinking of doing some renumbering of NALW models and want to know if I need to make any modifications and if so what modifications? Thanks in advanceRichard Rasmussen

Hi Richard, Actually, the C44/60AC is not 6000HP it is 4400HP in an C60AC. The 6000HP versions (actually 6235HP with 6000HP at the rail) were having a lot of mechanical difficulties. UP decided to use the 4400HP prime mover in the C60AC as these will pull as much as a 6000HP version, just not as fast. When they put those on coal trains, they were just as good as the 6000HP version, used less fuel, and were reliable. They originally intended to use the 6000HP version on intermodals, and you saw a lot on TOFC trains, but lately they have mostly been on general merchandise freights. The C44CTE is a newer version with better computers and traction motors to give a little more tractive effort. It is still 4400HP. There are some standard cab C44-9 units, but I don't think UP has any. There are C41-8 standard cab versions on UP and some of the original C&NW units were C42-8 but these were derated when repainted into UP units. I would be happy to give you a revised .eng version 4.5 .eng file for the C44CTE. Bob

That does help. If you could go ahead and send me the .eng files for the C44CTE. Also, if you could, I could use one for the C44/60AC also. I believe you are correct about the C44-9. Acording to Utahrails.com, UP never had any. Just C44-9W. UP must have mis-typed it on thier web site. Thanks again for everyones help. Will be posting screen shots in the next week. RE: What's The Difference?
It must be a typo, because the standard cab C44-9 does not exist as a real model (bet some model railroader has built one, though). The C44/60AC shouldn't have more than a negligible difference in horsepower, but it might in weight, because the wings at the back are significantly larger on the C60's, and the C44/60AC's were built with an intended upgrade to the 6000 hp HDL engine in mind. You are correct in that the only standard cab Dash 9 series I am aware of are the C40-9 units built for NS, my unintended lapse, sorry. The real distinction in the C60AC/44 has nothing to do with horsepower over a Dash 9 or a C44AC, but in the other components which give it a little more tractive effort, (weight, traction motors and computer). I am not sure on the weight difference the different engine installations make, but ignoring that, they should be close to the 187,000 pound max tractive effort of the C60AC (I know GE rates these at 205,000 pounds MTE, but the best real world I am aware of is the observed 187,100 pound figure of the UP C60AC, the heavier Australian model may best that?). Bob BTW, I will be happy to do .eng files for the C60AC/44 and the C44ACCTE when my real computer is back in working order.

RE: What's The Difference?
Well I hope this helps:UP C44/60AC's are acutally 4400 hp, but they are able to be converted to 6000hp. And also 7300-7336 are also C60/44CW's. The C44ACCTE are no different from a regular AC4400CW, the CTE stands for controlled tractive effort. This feature is for the units in helper service where a higher tractive efort can caause problems, therefore this software reduces the tractive effort in these units. UP has also taken more deliveries of the C44ACCTE from 5863-5960 if I am not mistaken, they are currently being delivered. Also UP will be getting six C45ACCTE demo units this month with the new Tier1/2(dont know which one) requirements, the CTE software, and other improvements. Hope this has helped you out.

RE: What's The Difference?
I have not seen any of the C44ACCTE units in helper service, all have been on point. I believe the actual difference is the incorporation of ZTR cabability. "ZTR also has an Excitation/Wheel Slip control System that significantly improves the pulling power of locomotives." It also gives better emmisions control. Bob

RE: What's The Difference?
Yea thats what I mean. Like if the units wheels start to slip it will reduce the tractive effort in order to regain control. They are usually in the lead but they are usually in pusher service in the blue mountains up north. But they are getting new ones in the 5900's. Well thats the software i was talking about but I didnt know the name of it.
