Jul-25-01, 07:26 PM (EDT) "Difficulty involved in designing locos?" I recently discovered that my work has a liscense for 3D Studio Max, yet the discs sit idly on a shelf. So, I liberated them from their dusty state (with the chief's consent, of course) and have decided that I'm going to see what I can whip up. However... I'm semi-new to designs such as this. I'm a mech eng by nature and am used to dealing with ProE. (If you're not aware, ProE is used for digitally modeling then creating projects starting at the nuts and bolts level. It then assembles it all for you to see if it'll really work, including tolerances and such.) If I'm familiar with one 3D design program, will I be able to migrate easily to another, or is it not worth my time to try?I can whip out models of door and lock mechanisms, satellites, piston engines, etc. in no time, but I dunno about trying to make a loco. Thoughts? Ideas of where to start? On-line tutorials or the like? I'm assuming I'll start simply by trying to get some rolling stock put together. In someone's famous words I guess I'll "give it a good shake and see what falls out!" Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I can design design darn near anything you can imagine in Autocad, but ask me to do it in Solidworks or Pro-E I'll give you the "deer in the headlights" look.Your best bet is to design in Pro-E and then export the file as a 3ds file, then import it into 3d Studio Max. Be sure to keep it simple though, so the poly count is around 3500. My SD75M came out at 62274 polyswith the radial trucks, antennas, horns, handrail stanchions and coupler all detailed out.Bruce Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-27-01, 04:33 AM (EDT) 2. "RE: Difficulty involved in designing locos?" I would like to see that SD75, I am not too worried about Frame Rates, but I love A Good Looking Engine!(Of Course Running 1GHZ and A Radeon Does Not Hurt) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jul-27-01, 10:52 AM (EDT) 3. "RE: Difficulty involved in designing locos?" go to http://www.mindspring.com/~sebringdesign/SD75M.htmlthe final version won't have this much detail, otherwise you'd need an even bigger computer to run MSTS. I'm about 5 times the recommended budget on polys. to slim it down I've so far simplified the couplers so they're no longer scale, simplified the handrail stanchions, eliminated the sand filler hatches, removed most of the truck detail and taken the scale profile out of the wheels (now just 42" disks). Pssst....How about www.trainartisan.com .....Look under the tutorials section for a beginner's tutorial on using 3DSMAX and exporting to MSTSKeep an eye out next Monday for a new tutorial to show you how to add new geometry as well as how to set up the texture coordinates....
