Greetings,
I am wondering if there is a significant difference between a GP-18 and a GP-20? I am interested in trying to reskin 3dTrains GP-20 into an NS (original) GP-18. From pictures they look pretty similar. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time and good day!Michael

RE: GP-18 Question

While the two units are similar, there are a few differences. Fortunately, most of these differences are internal. The most prominent external difference I can think of is the fact that the GP-20 is turbocharged with a single exhaust stack located ahead of the dynamic brake fan (if so equipped). In contract, the GP-18 is normally aspirated and has two smaller exhaust stacks located both ahead and behind the dynamic brake fan.I'd say go ahead and do the reskin. I remember painting up several Proto 2000 GP-18s as GP-20s in HO scale. Only a real diesel connoisseur would notice the difference...and few of them actually cared.BTW, be sure to adjust the .eng file for the 200 hp reduction between the two units.Henry

RE: GP-18 Question

I think the GP9s make a better GP18 simulation than a GP20 would. Just change out the physics to GP18 V4.1 in the GP series physics update. The Northern Pacific GP18 uses this method.

Greetings!
Thank you both for the replies. Hopefully if all goes well, soon I will have some original NS locomotives to upload. Happy Simming!Michael

Henry, didn't the GP-18's have superchargers?I remember seeing a replacement supercharger in a crate for one sitting in Little Ferry roundhouse on the NYSW.Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

RE: GP-18 Question

The GP18 is supercharged not turbocharged. The mechanical blower is not as efficient as a turbocharger. The GP18 had 1,800 HP while the turbocharged GP20 had 2,000 HP. The GP18 has a similar exhaust to the GP9, the GP20 had a larger single exhaust outlet inorder to drive the turbocharger.

I thought so.

RE: GP-18 Question

This maybe a stupid question, but what is the difference between supercharged and turbocharged? Thanks again and good day!Michael

RE: GP-18 Question

Supercharged..you drive a mechnaical blower off the crankshaft of the engine.
Turbocharged.. the exhaust drives a compressor which forces extra air into the cylinder to increase combustion effciency. The harder the engine is running, the more air is forced into the system. often has a lag from increased RPM to effect, but is more efficient than supercharging.
