I'm almost finished making an SD45-2 and need to know how to get it from TSM into the sim. Are there any tutorials around?

Did you follow the TSM tutorials? They tell you how to put a loco into the game.Any tutorials for making locos? – image 2

WOW. GREAT JOB ON THAT SD45-2!Well, here's the deal:First, make a backup of your current model (for future editing)Next, if you have finished texturing, join some parts by selecting those that you want to join and clicking the drop down box "Part", then clicking on "Join Selected" in the 'Part' box. Repeat until you have around 15/20 parts or less. Each truck must be one part, and each wheel on the left side must be joined to the one on it's right (BUT DON'T JOIN TWO WHEELS ON THE SAME SIDE!)Then you have to go to ALL your part properties (right click in the editing window, select "Current Part Properties" and name each part (in the text box "Part Name"). Wheels and trucks must have special names in order for rotation. The first truck should be named Bogie1 the second, Bogie2. The wheels must be named (in order from front to back) Wheels11 , Wheels12 , Wheels13 , Wheels21 , Wheels22 , Wheels23 . At this time, you want to make sure you locomotive is centered on the brown lines in the perspective views. Now that you have named all the parts, you must center all part's axis to their origin (except for wheels and bogies, they must be centered to themselves, which is called "center to object.") You can do this by highlighting your part (you don't have to actually SELECT your part, as long as the part is highlighted in blue) going to 'Part' (drop down box on the toolbar), then Center Axis, and selecting either "to origin" or "to object" whichever applies. After that, you must decide on a part "parent", the one that all parts will be linked to. Open the part properties of this part and select "NONE" from the drop down box Part Parent. Then highlight another part, open the part properties, bring down that Part Parent box, and select that main part as it's parent (Although if you have a situation similar to having a headlight mouned on your loco's short hood, I advise that you parent the headlight to the short hood, not the main part.) Do this until all parts have parents. (BTW, wheels chsould be parented to the bogies that they sit under, and bogies should be parented to the MAIN PART only). Now that you have done that, I will continues this in another post so I don't lose all of this if I get kicked offline....

Now you are ready to EXPORT your model to Train Sim!First, go to "File" on the main toolbar, then "Project Properties." Select that you have a "locomotive," give it a name, and a "Short Name" to use as it's name in the Trains\Trainset folder. Set the animation frames to 8. Next, go to "File" then "Create TS Object File". Specify the folder in Trains\Trainset you want to export the model to, and call the file the same name as you entered in "Short Name" with an .S extension. Select all check boxes.Make a consist, test it out. If you have any problems, please contact me!Say, do you mind if I could have the TSM file and textures for that thing? I really love the SF SD45-2s without those flared radiator grills.....and I might want to see if I can put some 3D trucks on that thing!Take care!Kurt

Thanks a million, TriRail...! I've got it working. Tweaked headlights, exaust, cabview, and sounds. I have to get the wheels remachined because of major flat spots from doing 70 mph em locked up:-) Add couplers and some details and this beast is ready to roll! Sure you can, I'll email it to you.

RE: Any tutorials for making locos?

Permission Granted Kurt. Can't wait to see it. The short hood was quite a bit too low. I raised it up a bit and added the Horn, AC, and a flashing beacon. Any tutorials for making locos? – image 13Best Regards

Cool! I've been hoping for one of these, too, for the Clinchfield route. Could you possible make one without the AC and beacon (or at least make them removable with an alpha channel) so that they can be reskinned into different liveries and match roads that didn't have those features (like the Clinchfield)? THANKS! Clayton

RE: Any tutorials for making locos?

I'm going to release it as an ATSF, but it will include the TSM file so you can revamp it to any road or detail config you want. It'll be uploaded as soon as I work out some texture issues and slap on some couplers.
Cheers

RE: Any tutorials for making locos?

oh so cool. i've wanted an sd45-2 for so long. is there anyway that someone could please make some alterations to it to make it fit the Erie Lackawanna SD45-2s.http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/sd452/sd452.htmli'm no expert on modeling, but i don't believe the changes would be too hard. all that would be needed would be to move the air horns to the right front of the cab, and make the fuel tank larger. then remove the beacon light and air conditioner. i'd gladly paint it in EL, Ex-EL Conrail restencil, Conrail, Conrail Quality, and CSX.joemy TKW logo is missing.
