Mar-25-02, 07:09 PM (EDT) "Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" Hi Everybody, just thought I post this up as I want to tell somebody what i've being doing all day..and everyone here is asleep now ;o)here's the shot of my first loco, as of yet without textures. I've had a hell of a game keeping the poly count down, but with some judicious use of less than ircular shapes and some "hidden" polys removed things seem to be ok. I haven't attempted clear windows as I 'm don't know exactly how to do them, and since I'm pushin gthe poly count its easier to do them by texture I'd imagine.

Mar-25-02, 09:27 PM (EDT) 2. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" Hi swhite101,
Finally, A Baldwin!
They're not just 'medium-rare', they're 'Very Rare' here and everywhere... with Eddystone burble/chug engine sounds, they're tasty delights...
Thanks for your effort! Keep us posted on your progress.
Somewhere in this humble abode/mess I have a slide or 2 of Ironton #751 dating back to around 1976 taken in Allentown, PA right around the Conrail takeover before they excised it. When/if I find it, if you'd like I can scan it and post it here. lmk.
AND,
Perhaps a D&H #1205/#1216 Baldwin RF16 Shark might be on your future 'to-do' list? I have a handful of slides of those I can scan if you'd like...

p.s. - Plainsman Bob, perhaps you can prep an .eng file for this grumbling beast?? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-26-02, 05:44 PM (EDT) 9. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" thanks for the encouragement everybody, and for the slide John I have started texturing today, its going slowly as its my first attempt and I'm no artist However I plan to do one version at the moment, which it will be will depend on the photographic evidence I have..at the mo not much the photos I have are Atlanta and Westpoint ones, so it will probably be that one. To be fair this is these ares ones that I copied for the handrails and these seem to be the main difference between operators beside the colours. This all said I will release my texture files so all those who want to have a go at reskinning it will be more than welcome..this will be especially helpful for me as soon I will have only weekends at the PC with Trainsim stuff on, and won't have enough time to do all the thigns I want. (I have already seen what I think will be my next project, but I'll keep it under my hat in case a) somebody has beaten me to it, b)I never get round to it )If anyone wishes get some sounds together it would be very useful as simply have the ones from the GP38 aliased in at the moment for testing..the same goes for a cabview I may have a go at this later but at the moment I have nothing to use as a template, and want to walk before I can run..and simply making the loco is the first step for me One final question (as an old TV detective might say ) for David, or anyone else who might know, How do I do alpha channels? I've come across them and know what they are but don't know much about them or have to use them.RegardsSimon WhitePS I have one confession..the only reason I chose this loco was I had a plan of it,one of the few locos for which I do have plans, so thats why I chose it. I didn't even know it was obscure..I simply liked it because it was boxy and ideal for a first attempt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-27-02, 06:33 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" hi guys, just to keep you updated, here are the pics of the little Beastie so far..
The trucks and wheels still need texturing and likewise I need to add numbers and logos etc as well as some more weathering. The blue isn't quite right for the prototype but as my photograph show the original in a very battered condition I couldn't be sure of the shade. The texturing has been a nightmare as I'm using TS Modeller from Abacus..next time it will be 3D Canvas for sure Simonbtw in one of the shts I have highlighted a grill (or at least it should be I think) but can anyone tell me exactly what the roof panel here looks like..or better still give me a photo

Apr-06-02, 04:25 PM (EDT) 15. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" Just to let everyone know that I haven't disappeared from the face of the earth, but in fact am forced to work away from home without a PC However the texturing is 95% done and I've sorted out the bounding box so the couplers appear in the right place. Hopefully I should get some time to press on a little tomorrow, but I'm thinking now that to work properly I should provide a suitable cab, so that you can see down the side of the engine when you drive. I have downloaded some cabs for Sw1200s etc where you are positioned similarly so I can work out how I need to position the cab, but alas haven't had time to experiment yet. In any case no of the ones I have found so far are quite right so I'm going to have to either start from scratch or do some heavy modifying..and that assumes the original authors have no objections! Apr-06-02, 06:29 PM (EDT) 16. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" Hi Simon -
Thanks for the update!
As far as the cab, if you wish to put together a more complete package the cab can always be added as a separate download later; perhaps an alias of an existing cab would do for now...

Apr-13-02, 12:28 PM (EDT) 17. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" Ok finally finished the textures for now , but sadly a week after I had hoped to Today's task was to get some illumination, and hey presto I have..the lights work..up to a point. I don't know if these are flaws with the game itself but the have caused me problems:1) Do cone lights always shine in the direction of the loco front even if the loco is flipped ?
2) if a loco is flipped in the consist file, Why do lights only work when the when the unit value is set to indicate the loco is at the rear of the train?Relating to the cab issue I think I will go with John's suggestion, so it will only be an alias for now. the alias will have the cab not viewing from the right location, as there are problems with external lights being visable from inside the cab when the cab is centered properly. These lights just hang in mid air as the hood side isn't visible out of the window, a very wierd effect indeed. If anyone else out there want's to lend a hand and do a cab I would be thankful, as at the moment I get less than one day a week for train stuff same goes for sounds too. Apr-13-02, 03:12 PM (EDT) 18. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" LAST EDITED ON Apr-13-02 AT 03:22 PM (EST)Glad to see your project didn't die on the vine! Simon, I have to give you and ALL of the builders credit for what must be a daunting exercise to construct these fine add-ons!With the appropriate approval, Andy Hockin has Baldwin sounds which are part of a real nice -sounds- package which can be found at Maple Leaf Tracks, the 'Kicking Horse Pass' group:
http://www.mapleleaftracks.com/freefiles.htmlMaybe Kelley Ellison can assist you with the lights; Chris Lee (TA) or Bob Boudouin or Chuck Schneider (NALW) for .eng parameters? As for the cab: an alias for now; perhaps someone here (SamSpade@NALW?) might help?(Sorry if I left anyone out!)Thanks for your efforts!John Roth

Apr-27-02, 08:33 AM (EDT) 22. "RE: Baldwin DS-4-4-1000(606SC)" I have dropped in the Sounds from the guys from Mapleleaf Tracks, and it sounds great, and works with no tweaking so I'm going to seek permission to use these, as they are just the job. right off to sort out one of the lights, to add a couple of extra hand rails and to get the Eng file right...also need to fix the cab, which I messed up last week Somehow I got the alpha bit wrong in my atempt at making a cab so I have a solid window...not much use Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
