Dec-31-01, 09:14 PM (EST) "More Bodiddly shots: logging route" Time to check out some more Bodiddly RR handiwork.. I grabbed my camera and out I went on my John Chambers Retro Metro #2 repaint of Jon Davi's 2-4-2. In the last episode, you saw the coal town which is a few miles south of the logging route. First, while you can't see it very clearly in these pictures, the double track mainline through this area runs from a high point down to a low point and then climbs back up. This makes a horseshoe curve around the logging route. When you reach the top of the logging route, you can see the whole horsehoe.
I'm chugging on up the hill now.. steep grade... *puffing*
and I mean steep.
I've crested the hill. I'm passing a point where below you can barely make out the main double-track line.
Futher past, I come to the first cutback. This part will be steep too.
I've crested the top and the worst part of the grades is over. Just a little past the above picture I come to a switch. Staying in reverse will take me to two loading zones which to get to them I have to cross over this wooden bridge. I'll visit these two zones first and then come back and continue to the very top of the mountain which is the final loading area.
Here's the wooden bridge I mentioned. Thanks to Jim Wards new all_object.ref handiwork this is a neat bridge to include on the route. This wooden bridge is made up of four separate sections.
After going over the bridge I take the cutback which is also a loading area down to the other loading area. These are simple spurs. Nothing too fancy.
Okay, I checked the two loading areas and I'm on my way back. Here I'm handing out the cab window to get a shot of crossing over the bridge.
I've passed the switch that takes me either down the hill or further upwards. Here's a scenic view looking south. The tree line furtherest in the background marks the location of the double track mainline. There's a small town and station just to the right of the tree line.
Just cresting the highest point of the logging route I took a shot of the first cutback we came through coming up the mountain. See the tracks below. Futher back to the tree line is the main double-track line.
This is the top of the hill. Just behind the train a little ways is a wye to turn the engine around for the down hill trip. You can see just ahead of the train a forest area and a lake. The double track mainline is in between the two but you can't make it out in this picture. My little 2-4-2 didn't fare so well. I started out with 4 empty logging cars and one caboose. The grades are so steep I had to chuck all but one logging car.My next set of pictures I'll show you the bottom end of the logging route. This was just part of it. I'll be using my fancy John Chambers 3d Trains repainted engine with TA's Budd cars. I'll be heading through this horseshoe curve making sure everything looks good.See you then... This is Chuck Zaner for this episode of Tracks Ahead! couldn't resist...Rich Garber Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Dec-31-01, 11:26 PM (EST) 2. "RE: More Bodiddly shots: logging route" Here's a pic to better explain the logging route. The logging route is in yellow.
The pictures above only start with the latter part of the logging route. The first half of the logging route which hasn't been scenicked yet, will include more yard tracks and some engine facilities. Already there is a wye and track connecting to the mainline. Note how the mainline horseshoe's around the logging route. The saw mill for which I haven't take a picture yet, is just out of view of the town where Bjorn's bridge is. The run will be a little lengthy since to get to the saw mill, you have to take the load into Afton, and then back up the route to the town where the bridge is at. Then you take the switch down to the industrial part of the town which I haven't taken a picture yet.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
