Sep-29-01, 02:40 PM (EDT) "1stHaul-1" Hello All;
Is anyone else having trouble with this activity, such as switches not throwing in the right direction. After dropping the two boxs on 27 and going over to 28 the switch directs me to the centerbeams not 5 mixed in front of the tankers. This is a fun activity even with the frustration. Any help would be appreaciated. Thanks

Sep-29-01, 02:46 PM (EDT) 1. "RE: 1stHaul-1" LAST EDITED ON Sep-29-01 AT 02:53 PM (EST)bill, and anyone else having trouble with #1.
check your workorder. the 5 carcut isnt part of the workorder, just something in the way. the easier version with the popups gives enough hints to follow the procedure (maybe too many I felt). that was one of the reasons for the two difficulty levels.as far as the switches throwing. one good thing about the NEC having all automatic switches is that the path cant be changed. it's deadon. you have to follow the path of the activity. i've noticed that any problems with the switches being wrong on the nec anyway have more to do with what you have to do (the task) rather than where you are. if the user just goes in the opposite direction as soon as the reversing arrow disappears they cant go the wrong way. the path wont let them. i'ts not as diverse as marias for instance, but as far as the path ur on-error free. hope this helps.

Sep-29-01, 03:23 PM (EDT) 2. "RE: 1stHaul-1" Ok Bill, here is what I did to Complete the activity.
(Siding 27&28)1. DROP OFF two boxcars at 27.
2. Enter 28, PICK UP 5 Mixed cars, move forward enter to
the other side of 28
3. "DO NOT" DROP OFF 5 Mixed Cars, but just PICK UP
those cars behind them (big white cars with Yellow/red/ on them)
4. Go back to the other side of 28, and pickup 6 Tankers.
5. Go to Siding 27, PICKUP 2 Box cars.
6. UNCOUPLE All cars, but 5 Mixed. (Your consist will be
1 GP38-2, and 5 Mixed Cars)
7. Activity should end.At evaluation, one of the workorder will be displayed uncompleted.ACTIVITY: 1stHaul(1)CustomV1.1
You completed this Activity after 53 minutes and 18 seconds of driving.

Freight durability limits were met.I don't know if the way I did was right, but I struggled WHOLE DAY
on this activity and that was the only way to end it.If I try to assemble that "partial consist" then I cannot
go back to PICK UP those whit big cars. on the siding 28.
Now I'm stacked at Activity 2 where Loco is opposite,
and don't have enough Power to Pull out train from one of sidings, so I changed it's direction, but this time
I cannot cross mainline to PICK Up other 5 or 6 Empty Cars
because switch don't throw.I tried following workorder In game, and printable as well,

Sep-29-01, 03:54 PM (EDT) 3. "RE: 1stHaul-1" LAST EDITED ON Sep-29-01 AT 03:55 PM (EST)sorry georgi you got it wrong.
at the risk of telling the ending here goes.the idea is to build a engineless consist on siding 27 for later delivery.
the consist should end up as follows from front to rear:
9 centerbeam cars
6 chemcars
2 boxcarsthe 5carcut sitting in the middle siding are just in the way!
they have to be temporarily moved to the far siding in front of the centerbeam cars (the white cars with the red and yellow bottoms)and left there while you go back to the center to get the 6 chemcars. you dont couple them to anything. just let them sit in front of the 9 cb's for now.
after coupling to the 6 chemcars in the middle siding take them to the 2 boxcars at 27 and couple. leave both of them there, return to the far siding and move the 5carcut back to the now empty center siding. go over to the far siding for the 9 centerbeams ONLY and take them to 27 to attach to the 6 chemcars and the 2 boxcars. detach from them and pull up to the main.georgi, in part two, try the easier version. your missing a part at edgewood.
if you still have trouble email me at nectrackteam@aol.com and i'll whisper the solution to ya.
hope this helps alldenny

Sep-29-01, 04:26 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: 1stHaul-1" Oh!!!! I see Know!
After Coupling 6 Chems and 2 Box,
I have to leave them on 27 right?
and then go back to 28. I will try again
I see know. For future release of new activities, in workorder,
can you put in if you leave cars on sidings or not.
Or is Assemble cosist mean, connect them and leave them?
I'm not sure
I will try #2 again.
Do you mind askign questions here, or you want them
throuhg e-mail. I rather ask them here.
Not only will be easir for me, but it will also help other people who struggled with activity as well.
Thanks. I can see bright future of NEC.
Really, Really excitied for future activitis

Sep-29-01, 04:54 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: 1stHaul-1" your a good man, georgi. and thanks for the comments on nec.as to your questions:
in the workorder, the location refers not to where the cars come from but to where the action takes place.
the boxcars came from the south side of baltimore at 2 different locations, but, they're assembled at siding 27. then the 6 chems and the boxcars are assembled at 27 and then the 9 cb's, 6 chems and 2 bxcars are assembled at 27 for final consist.assembling trains comes in two ways in msts.
a consist of just cars without the loco that is activated when the loco DISCONNECTS from the cars, and a consist of the loco AND the cars, where the action occurs when you COUPLE the loco to the cars in question. in that instance, the consist is shown in the car section of the workorder as including the "player service" (loco).i think the next workorders we do will include the car types as well as the numbers. that may be of some help.
a "real" conductor told me that the conductor and engineer go over the workorder or switchlist very carefully before they start.i have noticed too that any troubles in freight ops here are more a matter of not doing a required task than taking the wrong path or the switch not working.
you get "red" signals from oncoming/overtaking traffic, but in msts, you also get it by not accomplishing a task in the block ur in. if you notice when you come up on the main to a siding where you have a pickup, say, the signal ahead is "red", and after making the pickup and pulling out on the main, you now have a green or yellow. it's because you accomplished the task. just a part of msts.
take care,
denny

you can come and "hog" for NEC anytime!btw, do you have a good nec map? there's one in the file section called routes4.zip. use it with the workorder before you start and you'll get an idea of where and what.denny

I had so much fun playing this.
It was really cool to see same consist at Siding 27
as the one I made in #1.
Next is #3!
I don't have map, so I will try the one you told me.
(usually if I need map I open Activity editor so I
don't print out any maps)
Thanks for tip.

Sep-30-01, 09:18 AM (EDT) 10. "RE: 1stHaul-1" Hi Folks,I finally completed it and enjoyed the activity very much. The problem is that on the NEC, the switches are all automatic and if you do not use the particular sequence required by the author, the switches will not throw correctly. So, you must use the exact sequence that is expected by the auther rather than some other sequence to accomplish the same thing. Denny was kind enough to post that sequence. This may be a general problem with the NEC. I wonder if there is a way to permit mroe flexibility so more than one solution can be used to get cars in the correct position?Great activity Denny. Thanks a lot,bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-30-01, 11:53 AM (EDT) 11. "RE: 1stHaul-1" hi ergobob,
i'm glad to see you got through the first ok and posted your comments. before i forget, will you email me at nectrackteam@aol.com about betatesting.your quite right about the auto switches on the nec. and i dont know a way around it. unless we all change our switches to manual. and i dont go near that route editor!one thing in it's favor is that deciding on the path is done for the user. they dont have to worry about whether they've taken the right path. the trick it seems is looking very closely before you start the activity or before you hit the siding requiring a task to know exactly what your going to do when you get there. boxcarbob told me that the conductor and engineer go over their switchlist in great detail before they start their switching ops.i'm also sure that most people who have trouble with these activities are doing the "hard" version. after i did the three in the easy mode with the popups i thought they might not be challenging enough. But the hard version only leaves the workorder, not much help. But i did it that way to make it challenging. the next workorders i put out will have the car names as well as the car numbers. on a long string of cars the numbers can totally run together. the user can always try the hard one and if they get confused they can try the easier one with the aids.i think also that it may help to save before you hit the siding and then after so you can check the view details screen to check if you satisfied the task.anyway good luck with the remaining ones and email me when you get a chance.denny

Oct-02-01, 09:00 AM (EDT) 14. "RE: 1stHaul-1" There are two possibilities. First, read the second post in this thread. You must have dropped and pickedup all the correct cars for the switches to work right. Check to be sure that you did not do something wrong earlier. Second, on the NEC, you have to go further past a switch to trigger it. Just go a little further past the switch before reversing. However, you must have the correct cars with you.Hope this helps, bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Oct-02-01, 11:22 AM (EDT) 15. "RE: 1stHaul-1" hardisty,
the first move in that area is to back the 2 boxcars into the long straight single siding (27).
the second is to pull back out onto the main and back into the branched siding (28), BUT the first path your directed to is to grab the 5 cars in the way of the 6 chem cars on the MIDDLE siding not the far one where the 9 centerbeams are. u have to pull the 5 carcut out just past the branch switch, back it into the siding with the 9 cb's leave it by itself, go out just past the branch switch again and go back to the center to get the 6 chems to take to 27.
the key is to watch the track monitor. look for the white reverse arrow to disappear, then immediately go in the opposite direction.
hope this helps,
denny
